Leading Identity Management Vendors Join
Microsoft to Demonstrate Federated
Identity Using Web Services
05/25/2004 11:30 PM
Microsoft Corp., together with six of the industry's leading identity management vendors, today previewed interoperable federated identity management solutions based on the Web services architecture (WS-*). Software companies IBM Corp., Netegrity Inc., Oblix Inc., OpenNetwork Technologies, Ping Identity Corp., RSA Security Inc. and Microsoft have successfully concluded work demonstrating how their identity management technologies interoperate using the Web Services Federation (WS-Federation) specification, part of the WS Security set of specifications. In his Tech•Ed keynote address today, Andrew Lees, corporate vice president for Server and Tools Marketing at Microsoft, showed how federated identity management based on WS-Federation and the WS-* architecture will simplify the work of IT professionals as they seek to cut the cost and complexity of passing identity credentials across security and organization boundaries in a Web services environment.

Last January (see editorial links below) we brought you the results of a survey by PingID about people's "federated identity" projects. PingID created and supports SourceID, the open source multi-protocol project for enabling identity federation, so it does have an interest in keeping tabs on federation projects. To that end, it's now doing quarterly surveys to gauge the "state of federation" in the marketplace.

At last week's Catalyst Conference, Burton Group CEO Jamie Lewis kicked off the proceedings by identifying Service Oriented Architecture as the hot new area for identity management. Vendors, though, indicated that regulatory compliance was going to be the theme over the next year. Both will be big topics, but there was one announcement that I considered the bombshell of this event and it wasn't in either area.

EFF's new hires

EFF's new hires 05/06/2004 03:07 AM
EFF's staff grew by two today: my newest cow-orkers are Annalee "Techspolitation" Newitz (media baron) and Tim "BAWRN" Pozar (bull-goose geek).
Newitz was formerly Culture Editor at the San Francisco Bay Guardian. She has discussed the social impact of technology in Wired and Salon magazines, on CNN and NPR, as well as in her syndicated weekly column Techsploitation. As EFF's Media Coordinator/Policy Analyst, she will be handling media relations, as well as writing white papers, policy recommendations, and doing research. "I've always considered my writing to be a form of activism," she says, "so I'm pleased to join forces with an organization whose principles and dedication I've admired for many years."

Pozar is a longtime activist in the high tech community and has spent the past several years consulting as a network architect. One of the founders of Brightmail, an antispam company, he is also founder of Bay Area Research Wireless Network (BARWN) and co-founder of the Bay Area Wireless User Group (BAWUG). As Technical Director, he will manage new technical projects for EFF, as well as a team of analysts. "My goal in life is to foster the democratization of communication," he says, "and my work at EFF will help me continue the pursuit of that goal."

I once sat in on a wild conversation between Tim Pozar, John Gilmore and Tom Jennings (the inventor of FIDONet), about the day that Tim wrote some code for John's ISP, the Little Garden, that bridged FIDONet into Usenet, joining the two largest conversational networks in the world with a little software. I'm looking forward to more mind-blowing reminisces from Pozar, now that he's in-house and at large. Link
