the possibility of a security bug in the Google removal URL feature. A
Google user submitted microsoft.com for removal. We are stunned to
report - not only did it work, but Microsoft.com just went PR0.

.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?pr03146Of all the personal
computers to be unwrapped during the holiday season, more than 80
percent will be used to go online and search the Web's more than 92
million gigabytes of data (comparable to a 2 billion-volume
encyclopedia). Getting online is the easy part, finding a useful Web
page is a bit harder—keeping track of a useful Web page is another
issue altogether.
People have devised many tricks—such as
sending e-mails to themselves or jotting on sticky notes—for keeping
track of Web pages, but William Jones and Harry Bruce at the
University of Washington's Information School and Susan Dumais of
Microsoft Research have found that often people don't use any of them
when it comes time to revisit a Web page. Instead, they rely on their
ability to find the Web page all over again.

makes available databases of academic web links to the world research
community. This project was created in response to the need for
research into web links: including web link mining, and the creation
of link metrics. It is aimed at providing the raw data and software
for researchers to analyse link structures without having to rely upon
commercial search engines, and without having to run their own web
crawler. You may use all of the resources on this site for
non-commercial reasons provided that you notify them if you have an
academic paper or book published that uses the data in any way (so
that they know the site is getting good use). This will be added to

Japan jails academic for writing P2P app
Japan jails academic for writing P2P app
05/10/2004 05:53 AMA Japanese academic who wrote an anonymous P2P app has been arrested
for "abetting infringement." This is the kind of perversion of justice
we're accustomed to seeing in the US and Norway -- disappointing that
the Japanese have so thoroughly bridged the copyright hysteria gap.
The programmer faces three years in prison for writing code that
allows for anonymous file-transfers. We can only hope that the team
that led Microsoft's operating-system effort will be next, followed by
the AppleShare team and the pesky authors of ftp.
Mr Isamu Kaneko, a 33-year-old assistant professor at the prestigious
University of Tokyo, was arrested on suspicion of developing and
offering free downloads on his Web site file-sharing software called
Winny, Kyoto Prefectural (state) police said on condition of
anonymity.
He is also accused of helping two Japanese men arrested in November on
charges of disseminating movies and games on the Internet with Winny,
police said.

Reputation systems academic paper
Reputation systems academic paper
07/19/2004 11:47 AMThe current issue of First Monday has a thorough academic article on
reputation systems.
The sharing of observations and opinions builds up a picture in each
person’s mind of the reputation’s subject, which we might
call the "Invisible Eye" — the distributed formation of
reputations, and consequent increased ability to distinguish better
from worse. To the degree that you have access to and trust the
experience of others, it is almost as if you yourself had been there
watching that previous situation, thus increasing your base of
experience from which to judge future reliability — and
increasing pressure on the subject in question to behave responsibly.
The analogy to Adam Smith’s Invisible Hand is not accidental;
just as selfish local actions with market incentives can lead to
collectively efficient behavior, locally maximizing actions with
reputation incentives have the potential for similar guided emergent
behavior that exceeds what might have been designed by a conscious
planner.
The ultimate aim is to increase the level of collective wisdom through
sharing our separate experience and expertise. This will enable a
"division of experience" — instead of each of us personally
suffering through scams, cheats, and mediocrity, we will be able to
leverage each other’s experiences. Collectively, aided by
astutely networked reputation systems, we stand the best chance of
overcoming our dark side and bringing out the best in us.

Selling Academic Edition Software
Selling Academic Edition Software
07/15/2004 07:01 PMI'm trying to find a good deal on Dreamweaver MX 2004,
since I don't want to drop $400 on it (I'm cheap). I head over to
eBay to see what I can find, and see lots of dealls for $200 -
$300.
However, every single one of these deals is for the academic
version of the product — the one where students and educators
can use it at a reduced price. I emailed one of the guys to ask how
he knew I was a student. His response:
I don't know and I don't care. That's between you and
Macromedia.
Nice. This must be a huge problem for software companies, because
there's a lively business going on selling academic versions as the
"real" thing. Since there's nothing but the honor system standing
between a buyer and some cheap software, I'm sure a lot of people
suddenly become "students" for the 15 minutes it takes to make the
purchase.
Being the stand-up guy I am, I passed. Anyone know where I can get
it cheaper than $400?
