01/07/2004 02:42 PMBut alas, the
story is
not a completely happy one. For in addition to the iMac, I needed a
router. At first bought a Belkin router from the Apple site. (By now,
I had changed the one-click preferences to ship to my parents, so I
was able to buy the Belkin router with one click.) But then seeing
that I could get a Belkin wireless router elsewhere (of course, not on
the site selling Airports), I tried to cancel the order from Apple.
Yet when I went to return the Belkin router, life was not so simple.
There was no link in the confirming email, and it took a good routing
around on the Apple site till I found a web form to request the
canceling of an order (it was too late to call, I discovered after
calling). So literally 20 minutes after I placed the order, on
Christmas Day, I sent a request to cancel it. Today, five days later,
I received an email informing me that it was too late to cancel the
order -- which I had discovered, since my Dad called to say the router
had arrived. Twenty minutes on hold later, I received a RMA to return
the router -- of course, we pay shipping.
I wonder just what the thinking of the Apple Exec who set up this
one-click-to-buy, a million-clicks-to-fail-to-cancel system was:
"We'll make it really hard for them to cancel an order, and maybe
they'll get so frustrated, they just won't cancel it!" Yes, that is
brilliant.
Oh well, here's to the Crazy Ones.

04/12/2005 04:23 PMWe're now pretty far along into the web-based world, and you would
think that most people would recognize what a "link" is. However, it
appears that a debate is still raging on as to whether or not
web-based writing should
include the
specific call to "click here" when linking to some other webpage.
While it's been a common practice in web advertising, trying to entice
people to click on an ad, it probably doesn't make very much sense any
more in standard web writing. People know what a link is. They know
that they can click on it if they want to. Maybe some people just
like ordering others around -- even online.

Offshoring... To Click On Ads
Offshoring... To Click On Ads
05/03/2004 04:44 PMFor all the talk of offshoring labor, it seems that many in India have
answered "earn rupees clicking ads"
advertisements found (ironically enough)
on Google, which basically pay people to sit at home and
clic
k on advertisements on specific websites to help those sites earn
more pay-per-click ad dollars. This, of course, is always the risk
with any sort of pay-per-click advertising scheme. Those who stand to
make money are always going to look for ways to increase the clicks.
While it's easy to pick out automated clickers, having a network of
people around the world who are paid to click the ads could be a lot
trickier. Of course, this may remind some people of dot-com bubble
companies like AllAdvantage - but at least in that (failed) case,
advertisers knew what they were getting involved with. If such
fraudulent clicks continue on content sites for advertising networks,
it could noticeably decrease the value of such ads.
Click with Your Legislators!
Click with Your Legislators!
05/20/2004 05:22 PMBarb Brattin, Reference Manager at the Warren Newport Public Library, came
up with a great way to promote our statewide reference portal, Illinois Clicks!
"One of our top service responses at Warren Newport Public Library
is information literacy, so offering a program on Illinois Clicks was
a natural fit. As I was surfing through the site gathering examples of
great links in every category, I thought of a little exercise to get
some attention for Illinois Clicks via the program participants.
After a general overview of what Illinois Clicks is and how to
navigate through the site, we visited two pre-selected links in each
category. The last category we visited was Law and
Government. By this time, the crowd was mesmerized by the amount
and quality of information available through Illinois Clicks. So,
opportunist that I am, I made good use of their enthusiasm by
presenting each of them with an Illinois Clicks postcard (available
through Fran, in case you haven't seen them). We then visited the Legislator Lookup link within the Law and Government site,
and as they looked up their legislator's name and address, I asked
them to use the postcard to tell their legislators what a fine project
they have in Illinois Clicks and how they ought to continue funding
the project. They were delighted to fill out the postcards and their
messages were inspiring. I collected the postcards and sent them out
this morning.
One of the participants then presented an idea which I think is
particularly noteworthy. Why not place a link from every library's
home page with messages of support for libraries already written out
(like the Illinois Clicks postcard). Library supporters could simply
send those messages on to their legislators electronically. People are
very happy to express their support for the work we do to legislators.
The link would make it easy.
Food for thought."
Food for thought for your own library, too!

Mail and click-through
Mail and click-through
06/05/2005 11:39 PMApple Mail. There’s more.
The new toolbar does the icons-inside-buttons thing, which makes
sense, and may be a usability gain.
However, here’s a weird thing I noticed:
When Mail is not the frontmost app, the buttons change their look:
they look dimmed, disabled.

However, if you click, it’s actually
enabled, it supports
click-through. (This is true for non-destructive buttons, not all of
the buttons.) Right before you click you see the mouse-over
highlighting.

It turns out that the icon
inside the button is used to
indicate whether it’s enabled or not. Standard toolbars dim and
un-dim the icon too—it’s just that they don’t also
have a button being used to indicate status (sorta).
So the dimmed button look means “I’m in the
background” rather than “I’m disabled.”
Safari’s icons are similar in that the icon rather than the
button indicates status—but they don’t have a special
dimmed in-the-background look, which I think confuses things in Mail.

Microsoft's Double-Click Patent
Microsoft's Double-Click Patent
06/05/2004 06:13 PM
This is an edited version of my comment to Joi's
post on Microsoft's so called double-click
patent.
The patent is not really about double-click but about a way to use
a limited
input device (i.e. a cheap button on a mobile phone) to trigger
more than one function,
morse code sent from user to the mobile OS if you will. It adds
functionality without
increasing cost nor adding clutter. What it does is map functions
to like this:
Down-Up -> F1
Down-1/2sec-Up -> F2
Down-1sec-Up -> F3
Down-Up-Down-Up -> F4
and so on.
IMHO, this is not a trivial patent but a rather innovative new use
of existing technology
to overcome limitations of mobile devices. Is it a general
innovation?
No. But it is innovative if you consider the context of its
application and
you would not think it is an obvious solution if you were the one
assigned to solve
this problem.
Frankly, I prefer my Next-App (aka Appy)
button idea better since user doesn't have to remember the correct
pattern. Instead,
the user just flips apps as if flipping pages until they get to the
one they want
to use. In the end, users remember 'where' the app is (i.e. 3rd
app) and click the
button that many times as they move the device up for use.

Ingram, Amazon Lose Patent Battle On
On-Demand Printing
03/06/2004 02:05 AMThese days, there are a ton of on-demand printing operations out there
that will let people create a book on the fly. In some areas, they're
just catching on, sometimes for vanity publishing and sometimes for
better inventory control. However, it turns out that someone has a
patent on the idea of on-demand printing - and a jury has ruled that
Amazon and Ingram are both
violating that patent. Both defendants say they believe the
patent is not valid and will appeal. Unfortunately, the actual patent
is not clearly explained in the article. They do say that the
inventor met with Ingram prior to them starting up their own on-demand
printing service - so he might have some claim. The real question is
what the patent really covers - and if it's simply for the idea of
on-demand printing, if that's really patentable.

11/12/2003 01:35 PMThe latest in the Eolas patent saga is that someone at the Patent
Office has
finally agreed to
review the patent based on stacks and stacks of prior art that
people have been finding. Amazingly, the Patent Office appears to
have responded quickly (though, they don't say how long it will take
for a new decision on the patent) to the requests for a re-examination
of the patent. There's a quote from the USPTO's deputy commissioner
for patent examination policy saying that this was an "extraordinary
situation" which necessitated the quick response. The problem with
this statement is that it's
not an extraordinary situation. In
fact, it's an increasingly common situation, where silly patents are
getting the stamp of approval every day - and then used to hold other
companies up for extortion, rather than for encouraging innovation.

07/08/2004 05:05 PMI think it's about time we came up with a new topic/icon for stupid
patents. There are just so many of them these days. The latest is
that Adobe, who is no stranger to
abusing

with a patent over their
PDF technology. The patent is for
a method of extracting network
information via hyperlinks. Reading through the patent, they're
basically describing a system for clicking on a hyperlinking and
having the system not only download the page in question, but all
locally related pages linked from that page as well. Perhaps a useful
system, but it seems like this sort of technology was around well
before the patent was granted, and it's unclear what it has to do with
PDF files.
