Akamai or Backdoor?
Akamai or Backdoor?
10/28/2003 11:07 PMRecently my brother contacted me via IM to ask about some strange
network behavior on his machine. He was using sysinternals
tcpview, and noticed that svchost.exe was opening connections to two
IP addresses; one on 80.66.x.x subnet, and another somewhere beneath a
different 80.x.x.x subnet. He was concerned because the IP
addresses in question showed up as "unassigned EU block" in the RIPE
database. The closest assigned block to one of the addresses
showed up as being assigned to a company in the Netherlands, and the
other to a company in Germany (and GeoIP returned the same information
using the original IP addresses).
More interesting was the traceroute. The address that GeoIP
reported being in Germany routed to Hurricane Electric in Fremont,
California; with the last hop before 80.x.x.x being a 64.x.x.x router
in Fremont. Could someone in Germany actually be within one hop
of a router in Fremont?
After more investigation, we found a google news posting pointing
the finger at Windows Update; and particularly to Akamai servers in
the 80.x.x.x range. With a bit more coaxing, we were able to get
the RIPE database to reveal that some small subnets within the
unassigned blocks were actually assigned to Akamai. I knew that
Windows Update and many other MSFT sites contract to Akamai for
edge-caching services, so this was a very plausible resolution.
However, I am left with a few nagging questions:
- Are there any better tools or techniques to find out exactly what
chunk of code is accessing the network? Knowing that svchost.exe
is initiating the connection is not very useful. More useful
would be the exact DLL.
- Akamai works by configuring DNS to resolve differently depending
on geographic location (ping download.windowsupdate.com to see this in
action). This is a common architecture for our large globally
distributed customers' sites who use routing products like Cisco
Global Director and F5 3DNS to accomplish this. However, it
leads to a problem -- using reverse DNS from an IP address is
rather unlikely to return the same FQDN that was used to resolve the
address in the first place. So starting with an IP address like
80.67.66.16, you have no way of finding out if that was initiated by a
call to download122.windowsupdate.com or
spywareupload22.gator.com. And considering the way that Akamai
provides services to spyware vendors as well as to MSFT, you can't
necessarily trust a network connection just because it is connecting
to a block owned by Akamai. It would be ideal if Akamai offered
an IP address lookup service that could be used to verify which of
Akamai customers was being serviced by a particular IP.
Without at least one of the two above requests, the only way to
verify that the connections were indeed made on behalf of Windows
Update was to bounce the service and watch the connections die (and
assume Windows Update DLL hadn't been hacked of course).

When I first heard that McDonald's was planning to launch a new ad
campaign themed "Lovin' It", I immediately got visions of the
horribly tacky "Mentos, the Freshmaker!" commercials. I
envisioned some German ad agency telling hapless McDonald's
executives, "We know how to make more teens go to McDonald's;
we'll use some real groovy stuff and say the words Lovin' It because
then kids will think you are cool!" So today I saw one of
the new ads for the first time, and it wasn't all that bad.
Actually it was kind of nice. It's kind of a feel-good, "happy
memories of carefree times" theme, kind of like the Pepsi spots a few
years back.

Dynamic Languages
Dynamic Languages
08/12/2004 11:41 AMDynamic Tools for Dynamic Languages: After reading the "
Programmers are Idiots" essay that Joe posted last week, I got to
thinking about my situation. Am I actually a programmer? I came to
the conclusion that no, I'm not — I'm a scripter. I work
predominantly on the Web, and while I can "program" in Visual Basic, I
work best in scripting languages like PHP.
I guess I like to think that I solve problems, regardless of
method. I may not fire up a C++ IDE and compile stuff right and left,
but my company comes to me with IT problems every day (every hour,
sometimes), and I manage to solve 90% of them. I use all sorts of
languages and technologies, but at the end of the day, problems are
solved and business continues to improve.
(I will admit, however, to a concerted attempt lately to program
some things in VB.Net. Why? Because while I may not consider myself
a "programmer," I do enjoy getting paid like one. And, sadly, you
don't see many job postings for "problem solver.")
Related to all this is the essay linked above. It's a Very
Important Thing. It's very long, but it has good headings, so you can
skim it.
The author attempts to redefine traditional "scripting" languages
like Perl, Python, and PHP as "dynamic languages." It's essentially a
call for respect — these languages may be as glamourous as
Visual Basic, Java, and C++, but they solve as many problems.
Oftentimes more.
Just as Linux was suddenly recognized as a significant platform
choice after years of being "snuck in through the back door",
high-level open source programming languages are becoming recognized
by mainstream analysts as key pieces of an effective approach to
building software.
[...] The strengths of these languages derive from their open
source nature, from their pragmatic approach, and from their constant
evolution in response to real user needs. Ignoring them is equivalent
to ignoring the hammer in your tool chest because you've just been
sold a fancy screwdriver.
So, am I a programmer? Or am I a scripter? Or am I just a guy who
solves problems through a broad base of experience with what a lot
platforms, languages, and applications can do?
If it were up to me, I'd much rather hire someone who knew a little
about a lot, and who could analyze a problem from that perspective
before coming up with a solution that was centered around making the
problem go away rather than using one language over the other. Of
course, sometimes you need a specific type of programmer, but just as
often, you don't — you really just need a problem solver.
But maybe I'm just making excuses because I don't have CS degree
and I hate compiling stuff. Perhaps I'm just bitter.

12/17/2004 06:37 PMIt’s pretty clear that
dynamic languages are
a hot area, maybe the hottest, in the world of software development.
We need to do more to make them easily usable by people in the Java
ecosystem. So on Tuesday we held a summit here at Sun, with a few of
our internal Java leaders, and on the dynamic-languages side, Larry
Wall and Dan Sugalski (Perl and Parrot), Guido van Rossum, Samuele
Pedroni and Sean McGrath (Python), and James Strachan (Groovy). It was

Dynamic IP redirection
Dynamic IP redirection
10/30/2003 04:50 AMThose working on the internet as webdevelopers or webdesigners more
than often find the need to host webservers on their own machines to
let their clients follow their work. The problem is that as the IP
changes, the address they gave their clients will stop working. To
solve that, several companies offer you the chance to update your
dynamic IP everytime it changes allowing you to keep a static URL
pointing to your working, localhost machine.

generally a huge proponent of the publishing technique I call
static serving of dynamically-generated pages, it increasingly
seemed like the wrong way to deal with categories.

No dynamic XAML?
11/10/2003 11:11 PMLet's assume for a moment, that XAML is HTML "done right" for
rich clients (suspend disbelief if you have to). It
apparently
SVG like elements, if nothing else. It doesn't have CSS,
but apparently there are
other ways of solving similar problems being proposed.
Apparently, one can
embed small amounts of code in the markup. Unquestionably
controversial, but often handy. This corresponds roughly to
the role that JavaScript plays in HTML... or does it?
What about
Dynamic HTML? Namely the ability to modify the rendering
and content of the document on the fly? Isn't that lost by a
compile to bytecode approach?

Greetings from a dynamic shopping mall
05/29/2004 03:07 PM
I've always seen collections of boring
postcards but always wondered where people found such random
tributes to a humble gas station or burger joint. A few days ago I
found this deliciously boring postcard of the Forum shopping
mall in Helsinki which is described as "The dynamic, continental
shopping centre in the heart of Helsinki." Wow, what's a dynamic
shopping centre?! Who would send this postcard to someone and what
would they say?
Darling Veronica,
Salutations from Helsinki! The shopping center is nothing like Palm
Beach but they have a food court with two McDonalds! They have this
shop, Merimekko, that is just like Lilly only with a
bit more of the kitchen curtain appeal! They have electricity,
plumbing, and FedEx! Can you believe it? I always thought Russia was
filled with a bunch of people living in yurts or something and riding
reindeer! What a scream! Those Japanese wireless Nokia phones sure
seem popular around here, too, as everyone seems to be talking into
them. Can't understand a single word they're saying though. Nothing
seems to be open all night, except for the sunshine [no tanning rays
:(], so we have to run and go find something to eat before everything
closes. The cruise ship heads for Stockholm tomorrow, bork! bork!
bork! Love to Mopsie!
