Verizon's Get It Now Service Review

Verizon's Get It Now Service Review 06/21/2004 07:28 AM

getitinow.jpg imageGizmodo cub reporter Andru Edwards takes on Get It Now, the extended services, uhm, service from Verizon Wireless. He gives it an 8 out of 10, which on the Gizmodo scale is the equivilent of twelve cupcakes and the Brushed Aluminum Product Spoon. Andru takes us out for the short spin, and provides the full review at his site, Gearlive.

The Bottom Line

Verizon Wireless Get It Now is a nice feature for Verizon customers. It
is built right into the phone, and provides you with multiple ways to
kill time on the go.

Pros

Immediate downloads of ringtones, games, and other applications.
Get It Now is already part of most Verizon cell phones.
Vast selection of entertainment options for when you're on the go.

Cons

Demo's are not long enough to decide if you like a product.
Downloading content can be slow when not in perfect range.

Verizon's fiber race is on

Verizon's fiber race is on 07/19/2004 03:04 PM
Fios, a broadband-over-fiber service the company plans to launch this summer, is meant to battle cable's own "triple play."

Looking At Verizon's Fiber Claims

Looking At Verizon's Fiber Claims 07/21/2004 12:59 PM
Verizon has been getting a lot of press lately about their fiber to the home (or, as everyone likes to say these days "to the premise") plans. The latest was the news about the surprisingly low pricing that they planned, which the press lapped up quickly. Over at Broadband Reports, however, where they've been tracking Verizon's fiber promises for some time, they wonder if the press is being "blinded by the light" coming from Verizon's fiber announcements. They point to over a decade of Verizon (and pre-Verizon components) promises about delivering fiber to the home, none of which have actually come true. On top of that, they point to an Om Malik analysis that suggests the math on Verizon's fiber announcements doesn't add up. For all the work they're doing installing fiber, their primary supplier had a disastrous quarter. Meanwhile, another analysis notes that the cost per customer of the fiber installation is a somewhat ridiculous $1,360. While it is to be expected that early customers will be more costly to reach and acquire, that's still quite a lot of money when you want to charge $35/month for service. Broadband Reports suggests that these Verizon announcements are mainly designed to keep regulators off their backs, and notes the case of New Jersey, where Verizon has announced its cutting back its fiber deployments until the state reconsiders its decision to set the rates at which Verizon needs to lease its lines to other carriers. In other words, it all sounds good, but you probably shouldn't expect to be surfing the light fantastic via Verizon any time soon.

Verizon's Edge, I Mean, EvDO on the
Competition

Verizon's Edge, I Mean, EvDO on the
Competition
10/28/2003 11:09 PM
Cell carriers are pretty far behind on 3G, but Verizon's early deployment may give it an edge -- I mean, a competitive advantage: While GSM operators struggle with GPRS (10 to 50 Kbps) and are rapidly trying to get EDGE fully deployed (100 Kbps), Sprint is staying the course with 1xRTT (50 to 70 Kbps), and T-Mobile and Nextel don't seem to be in the running for anything more interesting. Verizon Wireless's early 3G deployment (1xEvDO, 300 to 500 Kbps) in San Diego and Washington, D.C., may pay off, Matt Maier of Business 2.0 notes, because they simply have this service now at a fixed rate. The advent of cell phone number portability about to be engaged ties in with this: Verizon is the only cell company to back it. They want people to switch over, sign up for data, and then lock them in with long-term contracts and the only real 3G that will have any scope in 2004. Great plan! (All speeds more or less real world, not the advertised ones.)...

Verizon's Fiber Plans Become Clearer

Verizon's Fiber Plans Become Clearer 05/13/2004 06:34 PM
It's no secret that Verizon is betting big on fiber to the home, but more details are starting to come out. Business Week is reporting that they're soon going to TV services over fiber in parts of nine different states either by the end of this year, or early next year. This is (obviously) a move to fight back against cable companies who can already offer the triple play of voice, video and data services. Of course, once the fiber to the home is there it can be used for a lot more than just video. Verizon also expects to offer broadband services up to 30Mpbs, with lower tiered plans around 5 to 15Mbps - and the ability to upgrade speeds much higher. The cable companies say they're not worried because the Baby Bells have said similar things before. Of course, the technology has gotten much better, and Verizon seems fairly serious this time. Still, it's likely that the technology won't live up to it's initial billing and there will be problems. However, at this point they're aiming high enough that even if they're somewhat off the mark, it may be difficult for cable to keep up. What will also be interesting is to see how this higher speed offering eventually ties into their wireless plans through Verizon Wireless. They've been fairly aggressive on that front and it's not hard to see the two converging in some ways.

Buy Verizon's Bluetooth Motorola 710 on
eBay, One Month Early
06/14/2004 08:06 AM

v700_ebay.jpg imageSomeone is selling a Motorola V710 on eBay, which is pretty impressive considering they aren't out for at least a month. The scam deal is, you buy it now and this vendor will make sure you're first in line to get the new Verizon flip phone, which is admittedly pretty hot, with Bluetooth (a surprising first on Verizon), MP3 player, a 1.2-megapixel camera with flash, and all sort of other nice fancy features, included BREW-compatible gaming. The bidding is almost up to $800 now, and there's still two days left, at least. But I know some of you can't stand to be the second person to have a phone, so now's your time to shine. (Thanks, Damon!)

Is Verizon's Anti-Spam Plan To Block All
Foreign Email?

Is Verizon's Anti-Spam Plan To Block All
Foreign Email?
12/29/2004 10:35 PM
Apparently Verizon is fed up with spam hitting their network, and someone has tuned their spam filters to what might be called an "aggressive" level. The problem, for many people, is that there's no option for the end user, who either has to take it, or find a new service provider. The biggest complaint, so far, seems to be that many foreign emails are automatically blocked -- meaning that friends and relatives cannot contact each other, and even some companies have found that co-workers can't email each other. While it's nice to see Verizon trying to do something, this seems like overkill. Any spam system should at least allow users the option of reviewing the blocked mail and designating which ones are legitimate.
