Is A Link To A Website Worth $5 Million?

Is A Link To A Website Worth $5 Million? 02/17/2004 04:58 PM
Ok, if you follow baseball even just a little bit, by now you've heard the news about "the trade" whereby the Yankees received Alex Rodriguez, considered by many to be the best baseball player around. While this, on the face of it, has nothing to do with technology, there was one aspect of the deal that kept bothering me. In the very last paragraph to the news report explaining the terms of the trade, they explain how the Yankees made up the difference to keep the overall value of A-Rod's contract the same, while still having him reduce the present day value of the contract by $5 million. In exchange, they're giving him a hotel suite for all road games and are allowing him to link to the Yankees website from his own website. Say what? How could a link be that valuable? Maybe, the hotel suites are really expensive - but it doesn't seem so. Another ballplayer points out that such hotel suites are pretty standard and cost about $16,000 per year for a player. Over 7 years, that's $112,000. Let's be kind, assume he gets a really nice room, and round it up to a nice $150,000. That leaves $4.85 million for the link. Here's a link to the Yankees website right here. Has Techdirt suddenly gone up in value by $4.85 million dollars? Do I just send an invoice to George Steinbrenner?

Spy Cameras In Shanghai Internet Cafes

Spy Cameras In Shanghai Internet Cafes 04/22/2004 01:26 PM
Already all internet usage in China is heavily monitored and filtered. However, apparently that's not enough for their internet cafes. It's not even enough to have internet cafe operators monitor usage to make sure nothing "bad" is happening. Instead, they're going one step further to install video cameras in internet cafes which send a broadcast to a central "supervisory center" where someone will make sure that nothing bad is happening. They claim it was spot illegal activity "immediately" - though they don't explain what they'll do after they spot that illegal activity. What's the next step? Having everyone wear their own camera all the time and have it send a constant stream to the same "supervisory center" in case you do or see anything bad?

Oddly flavored condoms in Shanghai

Oddly flavored condoms in Shanghai 03/24/2005 02:22 PM
Xeni Jardin: BB Reader Dan Washburn in Shanghai says:
While Bliss paid our bills recently during a trip to a typically unfriendly neighborhood KEDI market — many bills get paid at 24-hour shops here in Shanghai — I perused the condom display rack, always good for a laugh. Always, indeed. Flavored condoms. Ice Cream. Green Tea. And, my personal favorite, Ordinary.

I find the concept of flavored condoms humorous to begin with, but I’ve also never had to taste a condom. So I guess they serve their purpose. A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, right? (Or, in this case, it actually prevents it from going down.) Ice cream? OK, I guess I can undertand this one. But there are many flavors of ice cream out there. Let’s hope it’s not Mississippi Mud Pie or Moose Tracks or Brownie Batter or anything that ends in “nut crunch.” Something like Karamel Sutra seems appropriate. But, hell, it’s probably Green Tea Ice Cream.
