UTD Produces Seaworthy UAV Team 08/20/2004 04:16 PM
The University of Texas at Dallas fielded a small team for the 7th International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition. Despite it being their first time, the UTD team did quite well, scoring 9th among 18 teams, beating many second generation robots and even outscoring teams from schools with highly respected robotics programs like USC. For more photos and video of the event see the UTD team's gallery or the Cornell Team's gallery. Links to all of the participating teams can be found on the AUVSI site. Ed Paradis of the UTD team talked to many of the other first time competitors during the event and collected some interesting data on the different approaches taken to the problem. Dave keeps his wheels rolling across America although his treads needs replacing.  I envy him because I never done what he is doing right now.  Farthest I have gone on wunderlust by car was a couple of states.  I wonder if programming on the road is productive for him.

I just can't focus when I am not in a familar surrounding.  Maybe a monster RV like Tog will do the trick.  I'll need a broadband connection via satellite, of course, and my wife will need GPS coordinates of malls.Until my son leaves for college, seven years from now, I'll be looking at RV catalogs whenever I feel the wunderlust.

MIT Research Produces Robotic Results

MIT Research Produces Robotic Results 03/17/2005 03:32 AM
Roland Piquepaille writes, "Robots developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are working everywhere and can move without human assistance in a variety of settings, according to an article from the MIT News Office. For example, the famous PackBots were conceived at the MIT and are now used by the U.S. Army in Afghanistan and in Iraq. But engineers and robotic designers at MIT also are developing submarine-like vessels to help the U.S. Navy in mine warfare and battlespace preparation. And others are building 'intelligent' aircrafts, such as a 'robochopper' which would be better suited than surface robots to move in chaotic urban environments. ". For photos and links to more MIT robots, visit Roland's blog.

Jellyfish toxin produces erections

Jellyfish toxin produces erections 07/21/2004 08:01 PM
I suppose we are all going to be barraged with spam for "Miracle irukandji" soon.
The sting from an irukandji tentacle can cause irukandji syndrome, entailing severe pain, anxiety, paralysis and a potentially fatal rise in blood pressure. Researchers have found that one rare species also causes an extra symptom of prolonged erections in male victims.

Supporting the US troops abroad

Supporting the US troops abroad 12/28/2004 11:26 AM
Over the Christmas holiday I discovered anysoldier.com and was surprised I hadn't stumbled across it sooner. Sergeant Brian Horn from LaPlata, Maryland, an Army Infantry Soldier with the 173rd Airborne Brigade was in the Kirkuk area of Iraq when he started the idea of AnySoldier to help care for his soldiers. He agreed to distribute packages that came to him with "Attn: Any Soldier" in his address to the soldiers who were not getting mail. Brian is no longer in Iraq but Any Soldier Inc. continues with your support.Any Soldier Inc. started in August 2003 as a simple family effort to help the soldiers in one Army unit, thus our name. However, due to overwhelming requests, on 1 January 2004 our effort was expanded to include any member, of any of the Armed Services, in harms way.We now have 981 Contacts (872 Army, 8 Navy, 42 Air Force, and 59 Marine) helping approx 43,570 soldiers! There's a list of contacts, including recent emails, and a list of suggested items to send. You can even purchase care packages that have already been assembled with soldiers' needs in mind. I spent a long time just reading the emails from soldiers, it gives you a better sense of what it's like over there than reading most news articles. So if you received some money for Christmas and you're not sure how to spend it, consider getting something for Any Soldier and making a soldier's day.
