U.S. Schools Behind in Use of Technology

U.S. Schools Behind in Use of Technology

AP - Schools lag behind much of society in using technology, but students are seeing benefits and clamoring for more access to computers, the government says.

Technology in Schools

Technology in Schools 12/03/2002 11:46 AM

It's quite sad how technology has turned out in our school district. Not so much that our school doesn't have technology, or that the people in charge of it aren't smart. It's sad that our school is raised on the fact that Windows PC's are superior to Macs, or any other operating system, and that technology only gets as good as we have it. Its a shame that so many people are so close minded. I think our school could benefit hugely by switching to Macs, but that will never happen with the current administrative staff. But I suppose this is my opinion. Although I've used every platform you can think of, my opinion doesn't count, nor does my parents, or anyone else's in our city. A few select people decide which platform I have to deal with.

Check out this site for more info on why schools should have Macs instead of Wintel machines.

New x-ray fluorescence fingerprint
detection

New x-ray fluorescence fingerprint
detection
03/22/2005 04:59 PM
David Pescovitz: Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory have devised a new method to detect the chemical residue left behind by your fingertips. They used micro-X-ray fluorescence (MXRF) to reveal the sodium, potassium, chlorine, and other elements excreted in sweat and deposited in a fingerprint pattern. From Los Alamos News:
Orgs Pa Newsbulletin Images FingerprintsThe technique has several advantages over traditional fingerprint detection methods that involve treating the suspect area with powders, liquids, or vapors in order to add color to the fingerprint so that it can be easily seen and photographed. Using this technique, known as contrast enhancement, it is sometimes difficult to detect fingerprints present on certain substances, such as multicolored backgrounds, fibrous papers and textiles, wood, leather, plastic, adhesives and human skin.

Since MXRF is noninvasive, a fingerprint analyzed by the method is left pristine for examination by other methods like DNA extraction.

The wider use of fingerprint scanning technology in recent years has made it easier than ever for law enforcement officials to share information about criminals and quickly compare a suspect's fingerprint image with millions of similar imprints, according to a January report from the U.S. General Accounting Office. But it can still take small police departments that can't afford the electronic equipment more than five months to mail batches of fingerprint cards to state repositories, the report said.
