08/27/2004 02:09 PMDon't be fooled by the title. Dear Valued Customer, You Are a Loser is
not just hilarious. The book also brings up an interesting question
about the relationship between humans and technology. A review by Amit

Dear Valued Customer, You Are A Loser
Dear Valued Customer, You Are A Loser
08/27/2004 02:00 PMHow many stories do you have about technology products that just don't
seem to work -- and appear to be designed to have never work properly
at all (or clearly designed with no thought towards how a customer
would use them). It appears someone has decided to write a book about
many, many such products. Wired News is now running a
review
of a book about the problems technology causes for customers,
including a story about a driver who purchased 50 new pagers, only to
crash his car when all of the new pagers went off at once with a
welcome message. The book,
Dear Valued Customer, You Are A Loser, apparently doesn't
try to analyze the deeper causes of such things, but simply report
them. Plus, it sounds like the author has a built in franchise.
There are so many stories of these types of products, you can bet the
sequel is already being written.

Mark Frauenfelder:
Wired News reviews a book about technology going awry. It's
called
De
ar Valued Customer, You Are a Loser, by Rick Broadhead, and
it sounds excellent. I've had so many bad experiences with
technology-enhanced customer service departments that I can relate to
these examples.
Published in May with little fanfare, the 315-page
paperback is a compilation of more than 100 true stories of
technological blunder and misfortune. Some of the stories are bizarre,
some are pathetic -- but all are highly entertaining.
Take, for instance, the case of the Ukrainian businessman who put
50 new pagers -- a gift for his employees -- in the back seat of his
car and then promptly crashed into a lamppost when they all began
beeping at the same time. The culprit? A welcome message sent by the
pager company to each of the pagers.

With A Gun
05/12/2004 11:13 AMNot quite sure what the connection is between guns and online auctions
these days, but yesterday we had the story of someone who bought an
MP3 player on eBay and was
sent
a gun instead. Today comes the news of someone who lost an online
auction for a set of 180 used band costumes (winning bid: $360) and
was so upset that he
broke into
the winner's house and threatened his wife with a handgun. It's
unclear how he knew where this guy lived - or exactly why he wanted
180 used band costumes so badly. Either way, it appears that some
people take these online auctions things a bit too seriously.

Checking In On The DVD Jukebox Lawsuit
Checking In On The DVD Jukebox Lawsuit
04/18/2005 08:01 AMWhile the Supreme Court ponders the issues set forth in the Grokster
case, other, lesser known cases are moving forward. Last December, we
wrote about the creator of a
$27,00
0 DVD jukebox, who was sued by the movie industry. The product
had all sorts of anti-copying technologies built in, and was very
clearly designed to just let the user store all their DVD movies on a
central server for his or her own viewing pleasure. Here's an update
article that doesn't necessarily say anything new, but does point out
the "real" reason why the movie industry is so afraid. They're
worried that
people will rent movies and burn them to the
media server. So, let's get this straight: the industry is
worried that people who are buying a $27,000 movie server will then go
out and save a whopping $7 to $10 or so by renting a movie and ripping
it straight to their hard drive. Of course, in the meantime, plenty
of folks can download a DVD ripping application from the web for free.
Maybe this is one case that the industry can just let go...

Philips Senseo Coffee Pod Review
Philips Senseo Coffee Pod Review
06/16/2004 08:34 AM
GadgetMadness reviews the Philips Senseo coffee
maker, the other single-serving coffee machine available in the
states that uses those quick clean-up coffee pods. They basically flip
for it, even going so far as to test the temperature with a laser
thermometer, and swearing off Red Bull and Monster for, well, a while.
At $70, it's not cheap (basic, conventional drip machines can be had
for around $10 at most stores), plus you're locked into buying the
pods. Still, it's less clean-up than a french press (which I now use,
but I work from home), plus you don't have to slurp hours-old coffee
all day (although I have to admit, nothing says mind-numbing
automaton like eighth-hour Folgers).

08/19/2004 12:08 AMDownloa
ds on the Move in Europe
"The ability to download complete tracks directly over cell-phone
networks to mobile phones is becoming a reality in Europe. O2 Music,
the music arm of U.K.-based international telecom operator mmO2, has
started offering songs for download in Germany and the United
Kingdom....
Since Aug. 1, U.K. owners of the new SX1 phones subscribing to O2
Music's Active Music Download service can buy songs from a repertoire
of 100,000 titles. They can search, sample free 30-second clips, store
and play paid-for full tracks downloaded over O2's network straight to
the handset. The songs are protected and securely transmitted over the
O2 network with digital-rights management technology from Basel-based
Secure Digital Container in Switzerland.
The price of tracks ranges between $1 and $3. The handset, which
can store up to 120 tracks of music, costs 80 pounds in the United
Kingdom and 150 euros ($183.50) in Germany. SX1 users are charged for
their downloads on their monthly mobile-phone bills....
By year's end, Bornhausser expects that Europe will have up to 12
different mobile phones -- from Siemens, Sony-Ericsson and Samsung --
that include pre-installed digital players and SDC's DRM software.
The high-speed 3G networks will also make wireless downloading
easier. In Western Europe, Vodafone, 3, TIM and T-Mobile will be
operating 3G services by the end of this year. As the United Kingdom's
first 3G network, 3 began selling downloadable music videos July 30
from BMG U.K. & Ireland for 1.50 pounds each to compatible
handsets." [Wired
News]
Wow, I can't wait for this to hit the U.S., although I'm sure our
implementation will be screwed up with DRM and we won't be able
to use those songs on any other device. Still, the implications for
mobile entertainment through the cell phone in an always-on,
ubiquitous high-speed internet environment has implications for
libraries.
In a couple of years when Kailee and Brent get cell phones, they
will most likely have this functionality. What do you think they will
expect to be able to download from their library? What do you think
the library will be able to offer? Do you think the library is even
thinking about this kind of service for the future?

05/15/2004 01:01 PMHave you seen the new Apple iPod page? The new units
are outrageously priced at $300 to $500 dollars. Worse yet, every iPod
comes with all sorts of new limits! You can only marry one
computer to your iPod, under one user. You can only fit 15Gb,
20Gb, and 40Gb of music on each. I have 54Gb of music that my entire
family shares, and now there's no iPod that fits my use. You can't
play Windows Media Player files. You can't play OGG files on it
either. I'll wait until Steve Jobs changes the Apple homepage, but in
the meantime I'm seriously considering moving to the Dell DJ.
