Software That Lasts For Years And Years

Software That Lasts For Years And Years 07/14/2004 06:51 PM
We were just talking about the rise of quick and dirty programs as a way for individuals (not necessarily programmers) to solve specific needs. However, as was mentioned at the time, that would be a different "tier" of software programming, and there would still be a need for programmers to do higher level "big" projects. In the past, we've also discussed the problem of data extinction, where old computer systems and formats die out, leaving content and applications virtually useless on ancient media. This is a big problem for many applications, and Dan Bricklin is now suggesting that people need to start designing "Societal Infrastructure Software" that can last for centuries, not just a few years. The idea is that this type of software shouldn't have to worry about new computers or new formats or new anything... but will be able to just keep on working. In order to build this, though, Bricklin believes it will require embracing open source programming, though not necessarily the way people view open source programming today. It's a fascinating concept, but getting people to think long-term is so difficult these days, that you wonder if such ideas will actually catch on.

100,000 words in your pocket

100,000 words in your pocket 03/26/2005 07:58 PM
When the iPod was unveiled in November 2001, there were at least a few visionaries who accurately predicted it would change the way we listen of music. When the iTunes Music Store was launched, many said it would change the way we buy music. When GarageBand was demoed, at least three people wrote that it would change the way we make music. However, when the shuffle dropped, no one said it would change the way we listen … to books. But maybe it will. In lieu of actual books, my hometown library has begun to rent out shuffles preloaded with audiobooks, presumably in an effort to keep up with the changing times. In this, the age of quick information and instant gratification, libraries have gone the way of betamax and the laserdisc, lost in the digital shuffle (no pun intended). So what if libraries could turn digital, too, along with colleges, newspapers and anything else that gets written down? Of course, the written, printed word will never be replaced, but the 21st century's attention span (or lack thereof), has forced authors and journalist to write shorter, punchier works — blogs have replaced longer investigative pieces; tabloid-sized newspaper have become more popular than traditional, broadsheet formats; and even CNN has changed their format to cut down on the length of its program blocks. Last semester, Duke University positioned itself firmly on the cutting edge by supplying its incoming freshmen students with iPods "to facilitate the use of information technology in innovative ways within the classroom and across campus," and it seems to be working (though several were likely smashed last night after the Blue Devils’ loss to Michigan State in the NCAA tournament). However successful, though, schools have reservations about accepting the iPod as a reading tool, largely due to its reputation as a popular music player. But with the 1GB shuffle, as opposed to the 20GB iPod, storage options are significantly lessened, making it a much more desirable choice for academic institutions. Audiobooks have certainly become more popular since the iTunes Music Store began selling them, and if a public library in Levittown, N.Y., can see that, I’m quite certain that major metropolises will catch on, assuming they haven’t already. The digital revolution is greater than music and bigger than the iPod itself, and perhaps Apple needs to change its "songs in your pocket" campaign to reflect the changing times, Perhaps: Life is a page-turner.

Is That a Phone In Your Pocket... 09/07/2004 03:56 PM

pokia.JPGTired of talking on that tiny cellphone handset that makes your ear sweat and only comes to the back of your jawbone when you hold it to your ear? Nick Poole's Pokia is a crazy bit of retro chic that turns old 70's-style phone handsets into cellphone accessories. His latest creation, for sale on Ebay, is a Bluetooth-enabled version.

This is the my first bluetooth prototype. I've had it working for a few weeks now and works really well. The charger is at the end of the wire which turns out to be pretty useful. The answer button as you can see is on the top of the handset and the indicator light is mounted on the back. The only slight flaw is that you need a matchstick to adjust volume. Works with any bluetooth phone. Comes with charger (uk spec so you might need a converter if buying from outside the uk).

I don't know how much sense it makes for cellphones, but something like this would work great as a computer accessory for services like Skype. Nick has a number of other models, like the DJ Convoy (a set of headphones and a CB radio microphone), and the Hotline, a handset that looks like it fell off the phone that Reagan used to dial Gorbachev with.

A server in my pocket!

A server in my pocket! 12/23/2003 02:08 PM
Or almost, at least. (Maybe if I get the wireless network adapter for the Gameboy. (I may port Parrot to the Gameboy, too--it's got the power and enough memory, and I've a Gameboy emulator for OS X. Maybe on the plane to NordU) Which, interestingly, would make it worthy of the name server, as it's got a 33MHz processor and at least 32M of RAM, which makes it more powerful than the PDP 11/73 server box I did a lot of work on in ages past. And more powerful than the DG/UX box that replaced it, though the Gameboy has...
