Venture Funding On The Increase...
Depending Where You Are
04/27/2004 12:59 PM

The latest set of venture capital numbers suggest that (as everyone has been saying) the wallets of VCs are starting to open up again as they see the IPO window widening as well. Of course, it depends on industry and location. For all the hype about biotech, VCs are realizing it may be safer to bet on software right now. Software received the most venture funds, beating out biotech, which had been the most popular target the two previous quarters. Of course, the bigger issue was location. Life wasn't so good if you were trying to raise money in Uta h, Massachussetts or Texas. However, things looked much better if you were located in San Diego, Florida or Washington state. Of course, in many of these locations, just a few big investments represent the majority of the activity - so it's hard to pick out specific trends based on locations where there really isn't that much money invested on an ongoing basis.

The thought process behind the Venture
Capitol funding of NewsGator

The thought process behind the Venture
Capitol funding of NewsGator
07/02/2004 03:08 AM

Every small company has challenges and one of those challenges is always money. Just as I have big dreams and ideas of where I would like to take Geek News Central it is limited by the amount of money I have to invest in the site. I have started the process of looking at hiring some advisors and possibly if my cash holds out having some consultation meetings with people I think can help us.

My curiosity is always peaked when I read stories about what VC's are looking for. I know from our refereal logs that several VC Firms read our site on a regular basis, but you need a revenue model to draw financial interest. Quite honestly most blogs do not have a revenue model. All I can hope for now is that they read our articles and my opinon points to find information on new technolgies that they can invest in.

Like many Blogs we have tinkered with ways to raise money and may be introducing a premium service in the future, but we have to work out the content details along with working out the details of who we are going to target that premium content to.

Most of the companies getting VC attention are companies that are either responsible for the software that those of use to blog. The tools we aggreate data with aka Newz Crawler, NewsGator etc. Plus the companies that analyze the information we put out. But the individuals down in the trenches producing 100's of thousands of Blogs are basically helping other people's dreams come true.

For now I am happy if I get a few donations to help us with bandwidth cost. Never planned to get rich but it's the American Dream. For some real insight to what a VC is looking for read his article great information and should give you a better understanding of what the thought process is. [ Feld Thoughts]

Will You Get Different Prices Depending
On Where You're Surfing?

Will You Get Different Prices Depending
On Where You're Surfing?
07/12/2004 12:14 PM
Various services are getting much better at figuring out what part of the world you happen to be surfing the internet from. Sometimes, this can be useful, in helping to customize a search to your particular needs. Some companies use it to try to throw up local advertising. While some are worried about the privacy aspects, a bigger question may be how far the customization will go. A few years ago, Amazon.com ran into a public relations nightmare when they revealed that they were offering different prices to different visitors. Even if that's a more efficient way of doing business, something felt "unfair" about it to most people. Now, some expect websites to start doing something similar based on geography. That is, if you're surfing from a higher income area, the prices you see will be higher. Again, if this does actually happen, expect there to be something of a backlash -- even if it is what happens out there in the brick-and-mortar world. Local stores often charge based on the region they're in, and not on some nationally agreed upon price. Still, if this does happen, it won't be long before services are available to make it appear as if you're surfing from a cheap region, and the whole point of the geographically differentiated pricing system will go away.

BridgePort Gets Funding

BridgePort Gets Funding 01/27/2004 02:56 PM
BridgePort Networks secured a $10 million investment from Polaris Venture Partners and General Catalyst Partners: The company will use the money for product development and market expansion. BridgePort offers technology targeted at cellular carriers that integrates cell networks with Wi-Fi networks. Customers could seamlessly roam from one to the other using voice and data services. The network architecture is probably more complicated than it needs to be but BridgePort is appealing to the needs of the mobile operators. In a nutshell, BridgePort's solution routes all data or voice traffic from Wi-Fi networks through a BridgePort gateway. That way the cellular operator can track and charge for all usage. The setup is ideal for cellular operators who don't want to hand customers off onto a Wi-Fi network where they stand to loose revenues if they can't track usage....
