nnounced that RB 5.5 will be capable of cross-compiling apps for Red
Hat and SuSE distributions of Linux, with other distros being
added according to demand. You'll still need either a Mac or Windows
box to create and cross-compile the app for Linux. You'll have to wait
for the Linux-based REALBasic IDE, but REAL Software says that they
intend to make one available in a later version.
RB 5.5 is

Shifting Trends In Customer Ownership
Between Wireless Carriers And Phone
Makers
04/21/2004 04:47 AMNearly a year ago we had a post where we discussed the fact that many
shoppers on the market for a mobile phone service focused on
what
phone they wanted more than what service provider they
wanted. So, if they wanted a certain Nokia phone, their choices of
service providers was limited to those who sold that particular phone.
A few months later we looked at
how the
carriers should respond to this and one of the predictions was
that carriers would start to focus increasingly on
white-label
phones where smaller, lesser known device manufacturers would
build phone handsets to spec and brand them with the carriers name.
It appears that's exactly what's happening. The carriers have been
doing their best to
take the customer ownership back from the handset makers, and it
appears to be working. More and more people identify their phone by
the brand of the service provider, rather than the handset maker. Of
course, the article uses Nokia and Motorola as the example cases of
the big name handset makers likely to lose out - and back it up with
Nokia's poor earnings. However, the story was written before
Motorola
posted very impressive earnings due to their handset sales taking
off again. Maybe this is one battle that isn't over yet.

Carriers should be context providers
Carriers should be context providers
03/06/2004 01:56 AMAs the thought of paying $3500 for a month of gprs sinks
in and I think about the speech I'm going to give at
MILIA to the carriers and content providers in the audience, I'm
thinking more and more about how I think it might be a bad idea for
the carriers to get into the content business.
I think that as broadband becomes a standard part of households,
more and more people will fill up their iPods and mobile devices with
all the content they need from their flat-fee low-cost pipe. Most
content isn't THAT time sensitive. I don't see any reason to have to
download content on-the-go over expensive gprs when devices can talk
wifi or bluetooth and have enough storage to allow you to carry
content around.
The main value that always-on provides is presence information,
short messages and time sensitive stuff like news. I don't really see
the need to have broadband to do that. I think the carriers should
focus their energies on stuff like identity, payment systems, IM and
presence and leave the content business up to people who know how to
move large volumes of bits around at low cost. The problem with most
telephone companies is that they have spent their whole lives worrying
about quality of service, but moving large volumes of data around is
not about quality of service. You can afford to drop a few bits if
they're not time sensitive and it's a completely different game than
the circuit business.
I realize that 3G networks are supposed to provide us with a
cheaper way to provide mobile broadband, but I just can't imagine the
cost of all of the roaming deals, the metering systems and the BigCo
overhead ever being able to compete with the simplicity of the
Internet and wifi. I am not convinced that there is a market for
broadband mobile content.
This may seem obvious to Internet folks, but I think the mobile
operators are seriously considering broadband content over mobile
phone networks as "the next big thing".

Bypassing the Mobile Carriers
Bypassing the Mobile Carriers
04/09/2004 04:00 PMAP: Skype Going Mobile. The peer-to-peer phone program
Skype, which lets computer users make free calls to each other
anywhere in the world, is going mobile, with a version being released
Tuesday for Wi-Fi-equipped digital assistants.
I've
been in a two-day gathering about the future of mobile communications,
and one of the issues has been whether Wi-Fi and its successors will
open up a bypass opportunity that causes big trouble for the mobile
carriers. The answer was obviously yes, and the announcement by
Skype makes that even clearer.
Now the question arises which maker of mobile handsets will sell a
model that switches back and forth from Wi-Fi voice over IP to the
mobile network. This is what users will want, but the carriers have
huge clout over the handset manufacturers.
The market is moving, fast. I wonder if the carriers are smart enough
to move with it.

Hey, Regional Carriers Can Merge Too
Hey, Regional Carriers Can Merge Too
01/06/2005 06:52 AMWhen Cingular finished buying AT&T Wireless, it was as if everyone who
wrote about mobile operators had a pre-conceived notion that the
market needed six carriers. To fill that empty slot, suddenly Alltel
started to get much more recognition -- despite being a regional
carrier. With Sprint and Nextel merging, there's going to be more
room on that six spot list. However, it looks like this merger mania
also represents a chance for some of these regional operators to
consolidate a bit themselves. The latest is that it looks like Alltel
(rather than being
bought by
Verizon Wireless, as some had thought) is
trying to buy
Western Wireless, another regional carrier. Both are CDMA-based,
so that makes integration easier. Also, with little overlap, the
combined companies start to look a lot more like a national carrier
(though, they're not completely there). What was that about
consolidation among the national carriers creating less competition?
It certainly looks like some of the regional players see it as a
vacuum they can fill. Anyone taking bets on which regional carriers
will be rumored to be merging next?

Sprint, Nextel to Merge
Sprint, Nextel to Merge
12/19/2004 03:18 PM Sprint and Nextel announced their $40 billion merger of equals:
Sprint's CDMA technology has been a block to offer push-to-talk (PTT)
services that Nextel has made great profits on. Nextel has no
migration plan for next-generation data services, although they've
been testing approaches that aren't integrated with their iDEN voice
technology. Sprint has already committed to spending billions on 3G
high-speed voice and data systems. In seemingly unrelated news a few
days ago, Cingular dropped its challenge to the FCC proposal that
would allow Nextel to reorganize its scattered chunks of frequency,
giving them new contiguous spectrum in exchange for paying for the
cost of moving the public-safety incumbents to Nextel-vacated
frequencies. It's a multi-billion-dollar deal that the FCC offered,
and Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless now no longer oppose it,
and one would expect Sprint and Nextel to accept the deal, although
Nextel wants to pay substantially less. The new Sprint Nextel is at a
rough parity with the subscriber base of Cingular-post-AT&T
Wireless acquisition and Verizon Wireless (all on their lonesome).
Sprint Nextel will have 35 million subscribers, Cingular 47 million,
and Verizon Wireless 42 million. T-Mobile becomes a distant fourth
(about 16 million subscribers) with no data upgrade plan in sight.
This didn't elude the Wall Street Journal, which filed this report in
which T-Mobile notes that worldwide they have about 70 million cell
phone users which allows them to compete on scale for handsets and
network components....
