philips_key.jpg imageEverythingUSB is reporting that the Philips KEY019 flash drive with built-in MPEG-4 camcorder and 2 megapixel camera (translation: May I have one, daddy?) is shipping this week, and drops a little tidbit that I must have missed in the previous press releases. In addition to all the cool gear packed inside of the KEY019, it also manages to squeeze a 0.16 color LCD display (to the right, and probably not to scale) from Kopin inside, which is one of the smallest LCDs available. Kopin claims to have some models of miniLCDs that are as small as a grain of rice.

As usual, there were a lot of PowerBooks at this conference. Interestingly, Esther Dyson, Lawrence Lessig, Bruce Sterling and I were the only people I noticed who had stickers on our PowerBooks. Other people who I know who have stickers on their PowerBooks are Mena Trott and Cory Doctorow. I wonder what this means? What do those of us who are willing to vandalize our pristine PowerBooks with stickers have in common?

Anyway, just an observation...

Apple Update PowerBooks

Apple Update PowerBooks 02/01/2005 09:40 PM
Apple today announced a variety of updates across their popular line of PowerBook laptops. Key new features include faster G4 chips (1.67GHz), more memory (512MB) as standard, and better connectivity via AirPort 802.11g and Bluetooth 2.0. The new PowerBooks also feature scrolling 'TrackPad' technology and Apple's much hyped Sudden Motion Sensor.

“Apple continues to lead the industry with the most innovative notebooks,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “With new features like the scrolling TrackPad and Sudden Motion Sensor, the new PowerBooks are the ultimate combination of performance and portability.”

Clearly, this update dismisses these rumours and suggests that a G5 PowerBook is still a few months off. Apple VP Tim Cook has apparently described the task of getting the G5 chip inside a laptop as "the mother of all thermal challenges". In other Apple news, Apple was nominated "<a href="http://www.brandchannel.com/start1.asp?fa_id=248">t op brand</a>" of 2004, bumping previous winner Google off the top spot.
