Xbox 2 Specs Possibly Leaked 04/27/2004 11:49 AM

A 'leaked' schematic detailing the architecture of Microsoft's upcoming Xbox 2 has the web roiling this morning, both from the more-than-respectable trio of 3.5GHz PowerPC processors at the helm as well as debate about the leak's legitimacy. While some have speculated that Xbox Next will be powered by AMD, all...

canon_eos_20d_all.jpg imageAnd while we're on the leaked photo tip, Canon has let slip the dogs of, uh, camera... pictures. The EOS 20D hasn't been officially announced yet (it's expected by the end of this week), but the first details are being gleaned from pictures that are still up on Canon's site. There's a mess of projected specs on DPReview, too, and while they seem reasonable enough (they come from a major Korean camera retailer), bear in mind it's still all conjecture at this point. Projected street price for the 8.2-megapixel camera is around $1,300.

The EOS 20D Digital SLR will be an update uses the same lens EF-S lens mount as the Canon's EOS 300D (the Digital Rebel), and will be an update to the 10D (Durr. Thanks, guys.). (Thanks, Geoff!)

Xbox 2 Specs?

Xbox 2 Specs? 03/14/2005 04:34 PM
Gamespy has released a list of features on the upcoming Xbox2 or Xbox 360 as it's been referred to. Their spy on the inside tells them that details may still change as the development continues. Here's what they say it will look like,

CPU - Xenon's CPU has three 3.0 GHz PowerPC cores. Each core is capable of two instructions per cycle and has an L1 cache with 32 KB for data and 32 KB for instructions. The three cores share 1 MB of L2 cache. Alpha 2 developer kits currently have two cores instead of three.

GPU - Xenon's GPU is a generation beyond the ATI X800. Its clock speed is 500 MHz and it supports Shader 3.0. Developers are currently working with an alpha 2 GPU. Beta GPU units are expected by May and the final GPU is slated for a summer release. The final GPU will be more powerful than anything on the market today; in game terms, it would handle a game like Half-Life 2 with ease.

System Memory - Xenon will have 256 MB of system RAM. Keep in mind that this number should not be equated to typical PC RAM. The Xbox has 64 MB of system RAM and is a very capable machine.

Optical Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon will not use Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Games will come on dual-layer DVD-9 discs. While the media is the same as that of the current Xbox, the usable space on each disc is up to 7 GB. The drive is slated to run at 12X.

Memory Units - Xenon will use 64 MB to 1,024 MB memory cards. 8 MB is reserved for system use, leaving a 56 MB to 1,016 MB for user data.

Hard Drive - As many have speculated, Xenon's hard drive is optional. 2 GB of the drive will be used as game cache. The final drive size is still being determined.

Camera - Xenon will have a USB 2.0 camera. It's capable of 1.2 megapixel still shots and VGA video. Photos can be used in-game and for gamer profiles. The camera can also be used for video chat. It's unknown if the Xenon camera will allow for Eye-Toy-like gameplay. Developers are currently using a simulated camera driver.

Sound Chip - Xenon does not have an audio chip in the traditional sense. Decompression is handled by hardware, while the rest of the chores are handled by software. DirectSound3D has been dropped in favor of X3DAudio. The former was deemed too inflexible.

The Internet Search on Mobile Race

"IDC analyst Mr Keith Wayras expects 30 million people, or 17 per cent of US mobile subscribers, to use the web on phones in 2006,while currently in Japan about 44.8 million people, or 58 per cent of internet users, access the web on their mobile phones.Internet access will be available on most of the approx 600 million mobile phones expected to be sold worldwide this year. While it is already possible to run a Google search on phones, it is not always easy with websites built for desktop computers and not small-screened devices. This article says that "Google itself said in April that if it doesn't launch products that improve Web searches on handheld devices, it will fail to win a significant share of an increasingly important part of the online market."The article goes on to analyse Microsoft,Yahoo and AOL's moves in the internet search on mobile race.

Possibly off to Microsoft in October

Possibly off to Microsoft in October 09/08/2004 05:15 AM

Received a interesting e-mail today from someone at Microsoft. I will be calling in the morning to verify this is a real person in Redmond and not some scam. If it turns out to be the real deal I will be headed to Redmond to get a look at a product line. I am going to refrain from even saying what the product is. Needless to say I have some experience in the subject matter and would love to get in on the testing. I have a crazy schedule in October but I will simply have to clear the calendar for the two days the meetings are on. Typical NDA stuff will apply no biggy I have worked within the constraints of NDA's for a long time.

This could turn out to be fun.

The Simplest Thing That Could Possibly
Work

The Simplest Thing That Could Possibly
Work
01/22/2004 02:14 AM
Coding up the simplest thing that could possibly work is really about this: If you can't keep five things in your head at one time and make a decision, try keeping three things in your head. Try keeping just one thing in your head, and see if you can make a decision. Then you can think of the next thing. And amazingly, when you write some of this dumb, straight-ahead code, it often turns out that it was all that was required. It works great.

When a second programmer comes back later and reads the code she might say, "The people who wrote this are morons. They just wrote a simple linear search here. This thing's ordered, so they could have done a binary search. They could have used a hash table here. Why are they doing a linear search?" Well, because a linear search worked.

And when the other programmer looked at the linear search, she understood it in a minute. -- Ward Cunningham

I couldn't resist this quote. Perhaps the best example of Just Hack I have ever read.

Opponents of extreme programming will point out that this example is exactly the problem with extreme programming - no proper planning, opportunistic design.

To itch his own.

Inside the Xbox 360, Part II: the Xenon
CPU
06/05/2005 10:53 PM

Part I of this series covered Microsoft's vision for dynamic content creation in the next generation of console games. In this article, Part II, we take a closer look at this CPU, codenamed Xenon. We cover the design of its individual parts, and we'll talk about how each part fits with the vision outlined in Part I.

Instead of spending hardware on an instruction window that looks for ILP at run-time, the Xenon instead relies on the programmer to structure the code stream at compile time so that it contains a high level of thread-level parallelism (TLP). In order to take advantage of the high level of TLP that the Xenon expects programmers to have worked into their Xbox 360 applications, the processor groups its large number of execution units into three separate cores, each of which individually contains a relatively small number of execution units. The many parallel threads out of which the programmer has woven the code stream are then scheduled to run on those separate cores.

The architecture of the individual PowerPC processor cores that make up the Xenon is covered in as much detail as is currently possible, and we also pull together what is known about the high-powered, 128-register vector unit that forms the heart of the Xenon's procedural synthesis capabilities.
