The Digital Music Renaissance -- In
Spite Of The Industry's Efforts
07/01/2004 05:14 PMYou have to wonder sometimes whether or not the recording industry
will ever figure this out, but the power of digital music to make a
better, more informed and
more willing to buy consumer seems
completely lost on them. Andrew Leonard, over at Salon, has written a
great essay on how the digitalization of music files has changed his
music consumption habits. Note that he's not talking about
downloading music from file sharing systems, but having the freedom to
discover new music easily, obtain that music without too many hurdles,
and then do with it what he wants. That's what's so powerful. While
the industry is entirely focused on people "not paying" for music,
they're missing the opportunity to engage all those who just want to
be better music consumers. And, as Leonard points out, no matter how
hard they try, the economics of supply and demand show that the
industry will never win this battle. "Instead of trying to prevent me
from enjoying my own music, the recording industry should be working
as hard as it can to get everything online and available, cheaply. It
should be making it easier for me to rip and burn to my heart's
content. Because when I'm happy listening to music, it doesn't take
much encouragement for me to spend more money."

Wants Your Fingerprints
" Not content with asking for an arm and a leg from consumers and
artists, the music industry now wants your fingerprints, too. The RIAA
is hoping that a new breed of music player which requires biometric
authentication will put an end to file sharing.
Established biometric vendor Veritouch has teamed up with Swedish
design company to produce iVue: a wireless media player that allows
content producers to lock down media files with biometric security.
This week Veritouch announced that it had demonstrated the device to
the RIAA and MPAA.
'In practical terms, VeriTouch's breakthrough in anti-piracy
technology means that no delivered content to a customer may be
copied, shared or otherwise distributed because each file is uniquely
locked by the customer's live fingerprint scan," claims the company."

How the hell is a library supposed to circulate these files? Does
anyone still doubt that the record industry would love to shut
libraries out of circulating digital music files?

[If you're looking to transition out of coding you might consider
opening a helicopter flight school in Edmonton. The economy here
is booming due to the high price of oil (Alberta actually has more
petroleum reserves than Saudi Arabia but they require some work to
extract, unlike in the Persian Gulf). There is one CFI here with
a Robinson R22. He charges CAD$500 per hour! The price in
the U.S. is closer to USD$200 or only about half.]
