Supernova: Social Spreadsheets
Supernova: Social Spreadsheets
06/28/2004 03:12 AMPhil Windler has a report from
an interesting panel at Supernova....
These are some comments and thoughts from a panel called "The
Network is People." Esther Dyson, Ray Ozzie, Mena Trott, and
Christopher Allen were the panelists.
Spreadsheets were amazing because they sit in the middle, between
calculators and the corporate accounting system. They let people not
just change the numbers, but to change the models and to build new
models. The power of the spreadsheet is the power to persuade people
(some might say "beat them into submission"). Spreadsheets are as much
about group interaction as presentation software is.
Social networks have a problem in that they let you record
relationships, but they don't give you power to control interactions.
They provide too many opportunities for "friend inflation." They don't
accurately reflect people's real social networks. What we need is a
"wiki for transactions." We need a way for users to manage their
workflow in a flexible way--a spreadsheet for social interactions.
Would you rather have ten networks with 700,000 people in them or
700,000 networks with ten people in them? This is an interesting
question. Linked-In is the first. Blogs are the second.
[Phil
Windley]
Esther's idea for a social software spreadsheet are right on. She
wants someone to be able to author their own sequence of events to
'script' their own social software actions. Sort of like roll your
own LinkedIn.
She said this right after folks were attacking the entire premise
of explicit social networking - saying that it was too artificial for
expressing real-life relationships.
But I say that without explcit social networking - we'll never be
abel to deliver Esther's social software spreadsheet.

EUSES/An error in a spreadsheet or Web page
calculation sounds harmless enough, unless you're the person whose
retirement funds, credit history or medical treatment rely on
decisions based on that calculation. A six-campus team of computer
scientists led by Margaret Burnett at Oregon State University is
working to help exterminate the bugs that infest the spreadsheets and
other "programs" created by millions of computer users. You may not
think of yourself as a programmer, but that's just what you are if
you've ever created a simple Web application that grabs data, such as
current weather conditions, from another site, entered a formula in a
spreadsheet or automated a repetitive task in your e-mail client or
word processor. Experts estimate the number of these so-called
"end-user programmers" to reach 55 million by 2005, and the same
experts suggest that nearly half of the programs created by these end
users have nontrivial bugs.

08/27/2004 03:44 PMUpdating Excel From
the Web: Really great article on Excel Web Queries. Users always
want to get data in Excel for some reason. Web queries are a
rock-simple way to let them do this.
Web queries essentially let Excel read data in from an HTML table.
Excel can call a URL, parse the table that the URL produces, and load
that as rows and columns. Additionally, you can get Excel to prompt
the users for querystring parameters without doing any VBA, and using
some extensions to HTML, you can format the data, add formulas, filter
boxes, etc.
With Web queries, you can get a lot of client-side functionality
for your Web app without doing a blessed thing, really. Microsoft
really hit this one out of the park.

"Syndication is key. I have become such a snob that I
won't read a blog if I can't dump it into my BlogLines account. Okay,
snob is a bit harsh. It is more about convenience. I don't have time
to search out every nifty blog I come across every day to see if there
is a new post. I want it delivered to me.
When I find a new blog I enjoy, the first thing I do is scour the
sidebars for a link to syndication. No syndication, no subscription.
The blogger loses out on higher readership & I lose out on reading
some awesome posts.
And so I'll end with a simple plea to all bloggers - check your
sidebar. Do you link to your feed? Is it easy to find? If not, why?"

03/11/2003 10:45 AMWell, I'm certainly doing my part to maintain SonicBlue's bottom line. Bryce Yehl just bought

"In spite of the fact that I'm already used to watching my
favorites shows on my own schedule, I do see my viewing habits
changing. It's that Magic Pause Button. I like it. A
lot."
Even better, he's pointed me to ReplayPC and QVision, two utilities for extracting
shows from newer Replays to your PC. I've ordered a
Linksys WET11 Bridge so when it gets here, I'll have to try these
out. I figure I should be able to pull a couple of shows off the new
Replay, convert their formats, and load them on my Arc
hos Multimedia Jukebox to go. Then when we go on vacation, I can
