Printer Wi-Fi Common Option
04/11/2005 01:03 PM Wi-Fi isn't exotic in printers any more: Kevin Savetz writes that
he's found the cheapest printer with built-in Wi-Fi: the Canon Pixma
iP4000R [Amazon.com link: $199 with $20 rebate]. It supports WEP and
WPA with supplied Windows software, but the online help for Mac OS X
shows only WEP support there. The HP PhotoSmart 2710 ($360 to $400)
has many functions, but also includes Wi-Fi for cable-free
connections. You can even enter the encryption key for a protected
Wi-Fi network directly into the device; it took a little digging on
HP's site, but the device supports both WEP and WPA. Savetz also notes
a couple of Wi-Fi printer adapters, but both failed at allowing Mac OS
X systems to print while he had success with the Canon and HP
printers....

Apple and its dual-core option
08/22/2004 11:29 AMAccording to an <A
HREF="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/08/18/dual-cores_detailed
/">article</A> published Wednesday in The Register, it
seems that Freescale Semiconductor Inc., a subsidiary of Motorola
Inc., is set to unveil a dual-core processor at Microprocessor Forum
in San Jose in October.
"Freescale's dual-core PowerPC is expected to sport an on-board
memory controller, this one capable of supporting DDR 2 SDRAM, along
with a Gigabit Ethernet controller. It is also expected to use the
Rapid IO bus, according to past Motorola pronouncements, though MPX
bus support is also anticipated to maintain backward compatibility…
(with speeds) beyond 2GHz."
Of course, this all sounds great, but with all the chatter regarding
dual-<I>processor</I> PowerBooks, this dual-core nonsense
is bound to cause some confusion. So, allow me to explain, as best I
understand it, anyway.
The main issue here is heat. As we know, a single processor produces a
heck of a lot of warmth, and the issue of cooling has been a major
bone of contention in Apple’s hardware. As it goes with the current
offerings, the faster the chip, the hotter the output, making it
incredibly difficult for Apple to implement either dual G4 or G5
architecture into its current line of laptops.
That being said, dual-core processors represent an interesting option
— or at least a stop-gap between the PowerBook-friendly G5.
Dual-cores can process two times more data per clock, which ultimately
allows the whole system to perform much better when running under
processor-intensive applications.
Furthermore, both cores have their own cache. Level 2 and level 3
cache have always been an issue with G4 processors, as their general
clock and bus speed hindrances have been compensated for with a fair
amount of cache.
However, as with the G5, dual G4 and basically every new chip that may
appear the horizon is the architecture of Freescale’s current MPX bus.
Since Apple’s not likely to overhaul its flagship laptop (i.e., with
RapidIO interconnect) until it is capable to sport a G5, so the
dual-core may be as crippled as the DDR SDRAM that currently pumps
through the PowerBook.
Dual-core may not mean much to the PowerBook as it stands, but it
definitely spells good things to come for the PowerPC processor
— both from Motorola and (hopefully, eventually) IBM. Since
keeping PowerBook's cool and kernel-panic free is of utmost
importance, dual-core could very well represent the future of Apple's
professional portables.
I can see it now: <B>One Apple, Two Cores.</B>

Javascript debugging: IE Option gotcha
Javascript debugging: IE Option gotcha
12/13/2003 05:19 PMI've been debugging Javascript today. I like Javascript as a
language, but I doubt anyone would disagree that it's a horrible,
horrible language to debug across multiple browsers. Firebird at least
has good debugging support - I currently use the Javascript Console
and Jesse Ruderman's shell bookmarklet and I
really need to learn to use Venkman
some day. If anyone knows a better way of debugging Javascript in
IE than relying on the
lame popup box I'd love to hear about it.
In any case, one bug that I successfully vanquished today involved
the humble <option> element. My
HTML looked
something like this:
<select name="categories"
multiple="multiple" id="catfrom" size="20">
<option>entertainment</option>
<option>movies</option>
<option>sports</option>
<option>news</option>
</select>
I was having all kinds of strange problems in IE, which I finally tracked down
to the following gotcha: in IE, the value property of an Option object is
empty if the corresponding option tag doesn't have a value attribute.
This is counter-intuitive because in HTML if an option attribute is omitted the text
inside the option element is used as the value instead. Mozilla
browsers duplicate this in their handling of the Option object;
IE doesn't. Hopefully
this tip will save someone some debugging time in the future.
Update: David Lindquist pointed me to Microsoft's
free Script
Debugger.

More Whining About Stock Option
Expensing
09/22/2004 04:20 AMIt's getting ridiculous how much effort is being put into the effort
by both sides
on the debate
over whether or not companies need to expense stock options. This
is entirely an accounting question with no direct impact on cash. It
shouldn't impact a company's operations in the slightest if they were
forced to expense options, but it certainly won't do a bit of good
towards cutting down on fraud (the original reason the concept was
proposed). The companies that claim this will kill innovation are
making a big deal out of nothing. Anyone who will suddenly change how
they feel about a company as an investment opportunity because of this
is completely clueless and shouldn't be investing anyway. That said,
the only thing that putting this law in place would really do is give
some more money to accountants to figure out how options should
actually be expensed -- and for that reason alone it's probably better
if things were left as they are on the issue. However, the companies
complaining that politicians aren't paying enough attention to this
issue have it wrong. They're paying too much attention to it.
