Because the new Mac operating system coexists so peacefully with

RSS reader market share
RSS reader market share
01/03/2005 10:01 PMI've seen a number of posts lately in which the market share of RSS
readers is determined by the number of hits the author sees from each
RSS reader in his or her server logs, and while FeedDemon is always
ranked near the top, I can't help but point out how flawed this method
is. For starters, FeedDemon defaults to updating feeds - that is,
checking for new items - every three hours, whereas many RSS readers
default to updating every single hour. And unlike a number of RSS
readers, FeedDemon honors the feed's <ttl>, so that the feed's author can specify how often
it's updated. A large number of feeds (including some of my own)
specify a <ttl> of 1440 minutes, so that the feed is updated
once a day rather than once an hour.
Perhaps more importantly, FeedDemon only automatically updates
feeds in the current c
hannel group. This approach has caused some controversy with a
handful of customers, but I stand by this design. Before creating
FeedDemon I studied existing RSS readers, and it struck me how
bandwidth-unfriendly many of them were. In my opinion, having a huge
treeview of feeds that are constantly updating is wasteful - not only
does it unnecessarily consume bandwidth, but it also slows down the
application. It makes far more sense to me to regularly update only
the feeds you regularly read.
In other words, a well-behaved RSS reader like FeedDemon is
designed not to hit your server very frequently - so basing
RSS reader market share on your server logs is wildly inaccurate.

Forget The Electric Guitar, It's Time To
Go For The Digital Guitar
02/18/2004 01:19 PMGrowing up, I always thought the coolest thing my father owned was a
beautiful Les Paul Gibson electric guitar. The famous electric
guitars really haven't change all that much over the years since they
were introduced, but they're finally catching up to the digital age.
Gibson is getting ready to start
selling a digital version of the guitar. It
looks and plays like a regular Les Paul, but the sound is sent out
digitally, making it easier to manipulate. Instead of regular audio
cables, you'll plug in an ethernet cable (no WiFi?). Of course, some
traditionalists are upset, and others point out that people will need
all new equipment to use such a digital guitar. Among the features of
the guitar will be the ability to upgrade the guitar as the digital
offering improves. My first thought on reading this, though, was how
soon it would be before someone hacks their guitar. We no longer need
amplifiers that can go to 11, because we'll just be able to overclock
our guitars.

Nokia's Marketshare Continues to Fall
06/08/2004 09:07 AM
I won't bother you with all the specific numbers --
they're in there if you want to dig them out -- but suffice it to say
that Nokia, which warned on April 6th that its market share was
declining, was not joking in the least, with their overall market
share slipping to 28.9 percent from 34.6 percent last quarter, despite
an handset market that is still growing overall. Nokia has continued
to lose marketshare to companies like Samsung and Motorola who are
providing the type of handsets -- especially flipphones -- that
consumers in the hot developing markets are clamoring for.

new JamPlug, an in-line (well, I guess most audio equipment is inline,

Smallest Guitar Amp," and for once a world's-smallest claim is
probably on the money. The $60 piece runs on a single AAA battery and
has a pair of strangely-familiar matching white headphones. The thumb
wheel controls volume, and it even can be overdriven into some quality
of distortion, which probably isn't the best sounding fuzz or crunch
or whatever in the world, but if it can free the legion of pimply
guitar noodlers from the curse that is the Rockman Metal Ace, then the
amateur rock world will surely be a better place.

songs. The Fretlight happens to be a MIDI guitar, too, so you can send
signals to it from standard music applications, or even other
instruments. That means your instructor could play a short riff, which
would light up on your guitar. And with quoted prices around $600 or
so, it's relatively affordable (compared to other MIDI guitars, at
least).
