PC ownership to 'double by 2010'  (BBC News)

The number of personal computers worldwide is expected to double by 2010 to 1.3 billion machines, say analysts. The growth will be driven by emerging markets such as China, Russia and India, the report predicted. My question is, what operating system will these new markets use on their PC's? China has already endorsed their Red Linux. Will Linux finally get it's chance, or will these new markets continue to use pirated Windows versions?

against Computer Users
05/03/2004 05:15 AM
A recent increase in malicious activity on the Internet, including the development of attack tools and exploit code, has resulted in an automated attack against computer users in the form of a worm identified as "W32.Sasser.worm" ("Sasser"). Through this worm, the attacker is attempting to exploit systems that are not protected against the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) vulnerability, which is mitigated by the use of a firewall and fixed in Microsoft Security Update MS04-011 on April 13, 2004. There is additional malicious activity in the form of variants of a worm known as "Agobot" (or "Agrobot"), which similarly seeks to exploit systems not protected by a firewall or the installation of MS04-011.

While we try not to keep it too geeky here, because that would be the easiest way to expose what a fraud I am bore you, this little script from John Muehlhausen is too useful to pass over. It lets you, with a tiny bit of Python wrangling, add Iridium paging failover to compliment your existing pager, meaning you'll have pager service anywhere in the world without cresting the 150 page-a-month limit of Iridium-only service.

Of course, you would have to wear two pagers and look sort of dorky, but if you're already telling your computer to page you via a Python script you're probably well past the gadget dork threshold (and good on you).

Oh, and it's not limited to Iridium, either, so you could tweak to support a second terrestrial pager, so that if a message never makes it to the first pager, a second person could be contacted. SNPP is useful stuff.

1. Perhaps your newspaper's funny pages includes Whatzit, the syndicated daily puzzle that takes some everyday phrase and presents it as a clever arrangement of words. For example, "nv emerald" is "green with envy" and "TTT" is "big tease." Imagine it runs for the next 40 years. That's 14,600 common phrases from now. Whatzit will be down to obscure taglines from the 1950s and hepcat cliches that were last uttered in 1928. 2. XP SP2: Not Popular With Businesses

XP SP2: Not Popular With Businesses 04/06/2005 12:38 AM

Apparently, the program conflicts Windows XP Service Pack 2 created still have a lot of companies spooked:

AssetMetrix surveyed 136,120 PCs between January 5 and March 10. It found that 37.6 percent of those PCs ran Windows XP. The operating system is more widely adopted among companies with fewer than 500 PCs, where slightly more than half of the PCs run Windows XP, according to the study. Also, smaller organizations show the highest acceptance of SP2, it says.

Of the 251 companies surveyed, 44 had fewer than 10 PCs running Windows XP. Eighty-four, or 40.7 percent, of the remaining companies had not installed SP2 from their XP machines, while 16 companies, or 7.7 percent, had updated their XP-based PCs, according to the AssetMetrix study.

Why Small Businesses should bl0g

Why Small Businesses should bl0g 08/03/2004 12:19 PM

In Small businesses and blogging, Church of the Customer discusses blogging options for small businesses, gives some examples of small business blogs, and provides a half-dozen reasons why a small business owner should write a blog:

  1. They fan the flames of customer evangelism. They help humanize you and your organization.
  2. They can function as an instant-feedback machine about your company and its products and services (because of the comments and trackback functions).
  3. They compel you to Napsterize more of your knowledge, which attracts prospects thanks to the search engines which index your ongoing knowledge automatically. Attraction is easier than hunting.
  4. The facilitate the spread of buzz if you’re honest, authentic and write your blog yourself.
  5. They allow you to have more conversations with customers and prospects than you could ever do in person.
  6. They help position you as a knowledgeable expert in your industry.
