Columnist Claims Identity Theft After
Investigating Fraud At Investment Firm
02/01/2005 09:43 PMWell known financial columnist Herb Greenberg has a fascinating
article about how
someone tried to snoop
into his phone records. Apparently, someone pretending to be him
turned on online reporting for both his Verizon cell phone and his SBC
home phone. While he can't prove it, his suspicion is that it has
something to do with a company he has written negatively about. The
bogus online account opening occurred right after he wrote a negative
article about investment firm Allied Capital. This could just be a
coincidence, but once he found out that the same thing happened with
both Verizon and SBC (he credits Verizon for at least sending a paper
letter to his home notifying him of this -- something SBC didn't do),
he called around to various sources for many different stories and
asked them to check their own systems. It apparently happened to a
bunch of sources -- all of whom had been investigating Allied Capital.
He says he has no proof, and he knows the FBI is investigating, but
as a reporter, he couldn't wait any longer and had to get the story
out there.

Fraud Detection Thoughts
Fraud Detection Thoughts
03/19/2005 02:50 AM
Some problems with using individual user behavior analysis for
fraud detection:
-
Low ROI
-
High false signals
-
Bad user experiences
IMHO, it makes more sense to just give the user the means to
protect themselves.
Allow user to move functionalities to areas with the desired
protection level and
set thresholds to the level suitable for them.
For example, divide up functions into three boxes, representing
three levels of required
authentication, and let the user move functions between
boxes. I would keep
transaction history at far left and move money transfer to the far
right which will
result in e-mail confirmation for each transaction.
Much of the user chores can be alleviated by offering a set of
standard account configuration
packages. For premium accounts, additional boxes could be
added for more intimate
verifications like a personal call from the account manager.

CNET/News.com discuss an old scam that most of us have probably not
seen in awhile, Click Fraud. This is a scam perpetrated when a person
aims to defraud an advertising based program such as Google’s
Adsense. The perpetrator uses special software designed create the
fake “click throughs” hitting the ad’s counter when
in reality it is just a piece of software that is creating these fake
numbers to fool the the ad company….

fraud: This is why I think that, ultimately, pay-per-click
business models are flawed for the advertisers.
[...] some marketing executives estimate that up to 20 percent of
fees in certain advertising categories continue to be based on
nonexistent consumers in today's search industry.
[...] Human operations can be more difficult to detect because a
wide network of people can click on ads from different computers
across many regions, without a steady pattern. According to a report
in the India Times, residents are being hired to click paid links from
home, with the hopes of making between $100 to $200 per month.
I think the future is pay-for-performance (the advertiser only gets
paid if someone actually puchases something).
This is an evolution, but so was the original pay-per-impression
model that's slowly vanishing these days. I remember when
pay-per-impression began to lose favor, site owners protested by
saying, "But hat's how it works on TV and radio..."
However, with those mediums, you can't easily measure performance.
With the Web, you can. That fact led to the demise of
per-per-impression, and I think it will eventually lead to the demise
of pay-per-click too. Pay-for-performance is pretty foolproof —
the merchant doesn't pay until they have cash in hand, and that's hard
to spoof.
