Broadband over Powerline Moves into Real
Trials
06/14/2004 10:14 AM
Bits over juice starts to take off in trials, though its future is still uncertain: A Washington state public utility is working with a private Internet provide in an inexpensive 60-day trial to see how well BPL actually works, and whether customers will find it interesting. Nationwide, a few dozen trials have about 2,000 actual customers. The future of the technology depends on the real cost and the real speed when it's deployed in the field. Unlike unloaded copper wire, which has known properties, the numbers of systems and the distances involved in BPL add variables that need performance testing. Broadband has to avoid truck rolls to houses to keep costs affordable....

The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam

The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam
08/06/2004 04:41 PM
Aaron writes in to point us to a story at Broadband Reports about a scam claiming to offer "free" broadband, when the truth is anything but that. The company in question is really just offering one of those silly web "accelerator" tools that speed up some dialup web surfing by caching images and using some compression. It's not really broadband at all, though if you're stuck on dialup, apparently it helps. It's also not free at all, since it's a typical pyramid scam, where you need to get others to sign up first. Since they know otherwise intelligent people will know it's a scam, the site doesn't make outrageous claims on their home page, but leaves those only for those who come via a referral code (which is all part of the scam) at which point they start making outlandish claims anyone with a bit of broadband knowledge would know were false.

We may have to cut a 0.1.1 release of Parrot soon, at the rate things are going. We have runtime loadable bytecode (though we need to get docs written) and more IMCC support for objects--specifically method tags for subs (which sets up the C name), namespaces in loadable bytecode (which makes loading classes at runtime so much easier), and syntax for method calls. Freaky. Really. I'm going to have to get cracking and get the method cache and object internals sped up, at which point maybe we will cut a release......
