Apple takes Playfair bullying to India

Apple takes Playfair bullying to India 04/16/2004 11:50 AM
Playfair is the program that removes the use-restriction wrapper from your iTunes Music Store tracks. It used to be hosted on SourceForge, but they chickened out when Apple sent them a bullying note demanding takedown under the ludicrous and loathesome DMCA. Playfair moved to a host in India, which apparently has no such law, but now Apple has nastygrammed the Indian hosts too, resulting in another takedown while the Indians get some legal advice. Gee, Apple, you really can't buy publicity like this. Well, you can. But why would you want to? Link (via /.)

It has been relocated to a server in India, and development continues apace. Link (Thanks, Jonathan!)

Playfair is back!

Playfair is back! 05/11/2004 03:34 AM
Playfair is the iTuens music player that removed the restrictions from the music you bought from Apple. It was hounded off Sourceforge by Apple's lawyers, and then it relocated to a server in India, only to be removed again at Apple's behest. Now it's back a third time, still hosted in India, with a new name: "hymn" (Hear Your Music aNywhere).
playfair has been renamed to hymn (hear your music anywhere) and is back online with the legal backing of FSF India. It has been updated with the latest FairPlay code from VideoLAN.

PlayFair And The iPod Lock-In

PlayFair And The iPod Lock-In 05/20/2004 07:13 PM
Where Apple makes its money is from the iPod -- and the iPod is the only device you can play music bought at the iTunes Store on. Hymn/PlayFair removes that link between iPod and iTMS, making it possible to buy music on the store while using it on a competing player. That lack of tie-in is what makes Hymn a threat to Apple. 05/11/2004 01:22 PM

Apple will no doubt launch its lawyers again, but the useful "PlayFair" software, which let purchasers of iTunes Music Store songs remove Apple's restrictions, is back online. It has a new hosting site and name: Hymn. Understand: You still have to have bought the songs in order to use this, and the songs are still tied to the unique ID created when you purchased. This is about fair use, not "pirating" other people's work.

Induce Act Refuses to Die

Induce Act Refuses to Die 09/14/2004 11:00 AM
Last month, insiders in Washington felt the Induce Act, which would outlaw technology that could contribute to copyright infringement, was history. According to music activist organization Downhill Battle, a year-old organization dedicated to bringing balance to a debate often dominated by the RIAA and large music labels, this is no longer the case. "We were told by people on (Capital) Hill that it is less likely that the bill will come to the floor by itself and have a nice debate and vote," says Nicholas Reville, Downhill Battle Co-Founder. "More likely the Induce Act is going to be snuck through a back door in legislative procedure. The only supporters in any industry or interest group are in Hollywood. From their perspective (the Induce Act) is not going to happen if it gets full airing."

Fax Technology Refuses To Die

Fax Technology Refuses To Die 12/15/2003 03:15 PM
Despite the rapid rise of digital technologies for communicating, the fax machine is still a major part of business communications. I still have a fax machine next to my desk. It's still easier for handling documents that require signatures and it's a one-step process rather than the two steps of "scan and email" that the article suggest is a better process. If scanners include an "email this to" function that somehow communicates with your email client, then I could finally stop using the fax machine. However, many companies still give out fax numbers rather than an email address you can send a document to. In fact, as the article points out, fax numbers still receive prominent placement on corporate documents and business cards.
