03/13/2003 10:16 AM Gustav made a small ~12 second clip of his bicycle trip to visit some
friends. It's very neat. He sent me to Final Cut Pro project file and
the OfflineRT media, and I cut a new version (MPEG-4 Quicktime) that
grooves a bit better with the music. There are still a few things I'd
like to change, but it must stop somewhere. :-) I made a good set of

Editor's
Notes :
Honestly, I don't see this happening. Final Cut Pro,
it seems, is one bait that has worked for Apple where users
will willing buy a Mac just to use the software. (Something
like Lotus 1-2-3 for IBM PC -- a killer app.) So porting Final Cut Pro
to Windows is not something Steve Jobs needs to do.

01/06/2005 04:14 AMFrogPad, an innovator in data entry methods for mobile computing, is
capturing the hearts, minds and digits of the growing corporate
technology market with the introduction of four new mobile data entry
devices all launched in its first production year 2004. Announced
just this week, FrogPads latest entry in the mobile data entry market
is a Bluetooth enabled, wearable keyboard. In 2005, FrogPad is
continuing its strategy to find partners to extend the FrogPad
technology to new markets such as gaming, military and educational

Unnatural Selection
Unnatural Selection
02/01/2005 10:05 PMAn MIT
Technology Review article offers a good introduction to the use of
evolutionary algorithms for hardware design. By replacing natural
selection with a user-defined fitness function genetic algorithms use
random mutation and recombination of the most fit designs to produce
continually better designs. The article includes plenty of real-world
examples of the results including
"a corkscrew contraption small
enough to fit in a wine glass, yet able to send a wide-beam radio wave
from space to Earth. It resembles nothing any sane radio engineer
would
build on her own." The article also touches on John von Neumann's
"complexity barrier" and the origins of genetic algorithms in the
1950s.
On the GUI Selection in UserLinux
On the GUI Selection in UserLinux
12/15/2003 08:04 PMIn the original UserLinux white paper, I made it clear that the
project would play favorites among the software choices available to
it, and that the resulting process would be painful. You can't say
that you weren't warned. But it turns out not to be particularly
painful, except for one issue: the selection of the GUI used in the
system. The selection of GNOME as the GUI of the UserLinux project has
raised a good deal of opposition from KDE supporters.

IBM In Denial Over Lotus Notes? Not
Really.
04/07/2005 05:29 AM
As Lotus Notes steadily loses share to Microsoft Exchange, people are
seeing similarities to
Lotus 1-2-3's loss of share to Microsoft
Excel. Microsoft Exchange is outselling Lotus Notes by a large margin,
and the only reason Notes still has a hold is because of its
entrenched install base. Today, all but one of the top analyst firms
recognize Exchange as the leading email product.
Yet, IBM and its Lotus Notes consultants still
continue to claim that they are the "best selling" email product on
the market. Sure, it's marketing spin (and thanks to Gartner,
it's not entirely false), but Forbes is missing the point (and
watching too much Monty Python). IBM is milking as much revenue from
what it already deems a dying product. IBM is strategically doubling
down on its services businesses and getting out of businesses that it
deems not core to this goal (
lapto
ps, anyone?). Their willingness to exit a commoditized,
competitive email software market in favor of growing other, more
lucrative parts of their business is actually a good display of
discipline. IBM is not hiding their head in the sand on this one --
they correctly recognize that the holy grail isn't email software.
