Ringback Tones

ringback.jpgRingback tones, which aren't terribly new, are little snippets of music that play instead of the usual ringing you hear when calling someone’s cell phone. Verizon just teamed up with Universal Music, they of Mariah Carey and U2 fame, in order to offer 500+ beloved hits. Verizon uses the universal iconography of music—dancing silhouettes—to explain.

Verizon announced ringbacks last November for $1.99 a year plus a 99 cent monthly subscription. I can’t wait to regale my friends and family with a tinny ringback rendition of Baby Bash's Super Saucy.

Horror Of Horrors: Rock Music To Hit The
Public Domain In Europe

Horror Of Horrors: Rock Music To Hit The
Public Domain In Europe
07/19/2004 04:43 AM
While the US locks up copyrighted works for longer than could possibly be reasonable thanks to our friends at the Walt Disney Company and the Sonny Bono "Keep Mickey Locked Up" Act, over in Europe they have dared to go with a horrifying 50 year copyright. Why is it horrifying? Well, it appears that fifty years ago popular rock and roll began, and that means plenty of those songs are about to hit the public domain. Of course, the music industry folks could never let that happen, which is why they're lobbying hard for a Sonny Bono copyright term extension act of their own, because the thought of Elvis Presley's or the Beatles songs entering the public domain scares the living daylights out of the industry. They've convinced Reuters to write up a very one-sided piece that never talks to anyone who might point out why there's a limit on the length of copyright, and how stuff in the public domain is important to our culture. Is anyone over in Europe complaining about how Shakespeare's works are in the public domain? However, Reuters digs up some random musician to say: "It's scary." It's scary? This is a musician who is on "a 37-date sold-out tour." You're on a sold out tour, making plenty of money, and you're complaining that you won't get your royalties from something you did fifty years ago? In most lines of business, you get paid for what you're doing today, not what you did fifty years ago.

One Less Online Music Store To Deal With

One Less Online Music Store To Deal With 06/11/2004 12:55 PM
In early 2003 a group of the top brick-and-mortar music retail shops announc ed plans for a unified downloadable music store that got lots of attention. We were a bit skeptical, assuming (like most companies) they wouldn't really want to cannibalize their existing business models and would come up with something that was expensive and weak. They didn't even get that far. Without ever launching, they've pulled the plug on the program, claiming that there's just not enough business in online music sales for it to matter to them. While it's nice that there's not "yet another" online music store offering music that won't work with any music you buy from any other music download store, this is quite a statement on how these stores view downloadable music. Downloadable music is much more of a threat to the record stores' business models than the record labels, yet the stores have mostly decided to put their heads in the sand and assume it's not worth worrying about. Someone ought to send them a copy of < i>The Innovator's Dilemma.
