Dutch Parliament Tells Minister To Stop

Dutch Parliament Tells Minister To Stop
Supporting Software Patents
07/06/2004 12:15 PM
Back in May we had the story of how the EU Council Ministers, despite tons of protest, had brokere d a backroom deal to approve an incredible backwards looking proposal on accepting software patents. Apparently, the Dutch Minister went back to his own Parliament and described the new proposal as a "compromise" rather than a one-sided ruling that ignored almost all of the complaints about problems with the proposal. Found on Dave Farber's Interesting People list comes the news that the Dutch Minister has now admitted his explanation of the proposal was a mistake, which he somehow blames on an "an error in the word processor." If someone believes that an error in a word processor can lead to him saying something that is completely untrue about a proposed law that would seriously impact the country's ability to innovate, you have to wonder why this guy has any power to vote on such laws at all. Thankfully, the Dutch Parliament seems to agree, and have told him to change his vote and no longer support the proposal. So far, this story doesn't seem to be getting much attention other than this one mention, however, so I'm wondering if there are others who can confirm this is what actually happened. I've found one version at DMEurope that seems to pretty much repeat the original press release, but nothing else.

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

Barb Dybwad tells it like it is

Barb Dybwad tells it like it is 04/06/2005 09:22 PM

I've been en joying reading Barb Dybwad over at the SocialSoftware-WeblogsInc . site. Yet another discovery of Judith Meskills (she also the one who turned me onto Peter Caputa) - Barb has been following 'community video' and now podcasting - asking simple questions like "do these technologies live up to their hype?"
I never worry about issues like that - but I'm sure others are.

So you go Barb - us communities need you to represent us.

He re's Barb's most recent post:

Engadget podcast icon - normal size

Yesterday we talked about the advent of social video and how that seems to be booming in the blogosphere. Podcasting, however, which has been on the scene longer (not to mention that audio enclosures have been around far longer than the term ‘podcasting’ has been around), came out in a blaze of glory when popularized late last year by Adam Curry and Dave Winer and yet — is it living up to the hype? Given that the cadre of optimistic technologists came out early with unrealistic claims about how podcasting would be the death of radio, but what exactly is realistic to predict for the growth of podcasting? Despite suspiciously overinflated (and later retracted) internet studies showing podcasting audiences in the multi-million range, not everyone is smoking the podcasting dope. So my question for you, dear readers, is this: are you smoking the dope? ;)

POSTLOG: There's a double reason why I included the Weblogs.inc ad in this story posting:

a) it shows that Jason Calacanis is making money.

b) I happen to really like Userplane as a company. We're using their technology with one of our clients.

AP - For many delegates it's not enough to wear their partisanship on the sleeve. They wear it on the head, too. At the Democratic National Convention on Monday night, there were classic straw hats, brims buckling beneath the weight of campaign buttons. There was a cowboy hat with a wooden donkey on top. And there was a replica of Lady Liberty's crown.

Judge Tells Valenti To Allow DVD

Judge Tells Valenti To Allow DVD
Screeners
12/08/2003 04:41 AM
Well, the latest word in Jack Valenti's effort to ban studios from sending DVD screeners to awards voters is that, sorry, but it's not the MPAA's call. A judge has said that the studios can not be blocked from sending screeners if they want to. This means that independent studios can still send out the screeners, though, I imagine it could lead to some backlash in relationships they hold with the major studios. Meanwhile, Jack Valenti says that the MPAA is going to appeal. Am I the only one who's a little confused about this one? If a studio wants to send out a DVD to the award voters, what's to stop them legally, no matter what Valenti says? The real threat is that they'll be somehow blackballed by Hollywood - and that's going to happen no matter what the courts say.
