Samsung's new camcorder phone
11/06/2003 03:00 AMJust got word of a new camcorder phone from Samsung that can record up
to two hours of video. But it gets even better. The SCH-V410 can also
double as a remote control for a TV or DVD player, take still digital
pictures (with flash), and play music stored on it without having to
open up the phone. It also has a 262,000 color internal LCD screen, an
external OLED screen, and support for video-on-demand services. The
V410 is just for the South Korean market, but Samsung is planning to
make a PCS version of it called the SPH-V4300 which could conceivably
be sold here in the US....

Samsung's First Photo Printer
06/24/2005 04:00 PM
It's so slow today that we're reduced to
writing about printers. The Samsung SPP-2040 and SPP-2020 are thermal
transfer printers that firmly place the Korean giant among such greats
as Lexmark and HP. These 1-photo-per-minute printers don't use
inkjets. Instead, the heads burn a thin film of color for waterproof
and age-proof—call me in 50 years, Samsung, and we'll see how
age-proof they are—prints.
They're pricey, at least in the UK, in the $300-$400 range, I'll
reckon. And they're shiny and silver. We also didn't write the nasty
headline you'll find below. We would have used something much more
tasteless.

Patents are obviously patented
Patents are obviously patented
02/10/2004 02:55 AMIn a surprise move, the US Patent Office has granted
a patent
which patents the patent office itself!
Hehe. Actually, the patent is meant to patent the concept of
"digital ownership", i.e. the idea that you can
"own" things in online multiplayer games. The patent is
just so broad that it covers pretty much any database, including the
patent database.
This is another example on how the USPTO has just thrown its hands up
in the air and basically says "accept them all and let courts
sort them out." This is an example on so many countless things
that have gone wrong with the system I can't even be bothered to
enumerate them anymore... Let me just begin with the notion that the
idea of ownership could be patented at all, and end up with how big
companies can use this to trounce upon the smaller ones, and you can
imagine the rant between those yourself.
Has HP Patented Refilling Ink?
Has HP Patented Refilling Ink?
03/28/2005 06:33 PMIn a case that sounds somewhat reminiscent of
Lexma
rk's (failed) attempts to use intellectual property law to block
the competition, HP has decided to
sue two companies
that offer refilled ink cartridges for their printers. The ink
business, of course, is big business -- with ink costing
more
than vintage champagne or
high
end perfume (depending on whose study you want to read). HP
claims that they have nothing against customers choosing to buy
refilled cartridges, but they have problems with these two refilling
companies. The first one is accused of patent violations, which seems
like an odd issue. The details (buried all the way at the end of the
article) say the patents are about the type of ink -- which seems
bizarre. Even more bizarre is that HP seems to make it very clear in
the filing that if the three patents they've picked out don't stick,
they have another 9,000 to choose from (which sounds eerily like IBM's
patent attack
on Sun years ago: "OK, maybe you don't infringe these seven
patents. But we have 10,000 U.S. patents. Do you really want us to go
back to Armonk and find seven patents you do infringe? Or do you want
to make this easy and just pay us $20 million?"). The other claim
makes a bit more sense, as HP says the second firm is packaging the
refilled cartridges as if they were new -- which could lead to
consumer confusion. Still, these lawsuits do seem like a simple
attempt to scare off certain ink refillers.

Samsung's Olympic Gold Phones
Samsung's Olympic Gold Phones
08/09/2004 07:27 AM
To commemorate the Olympic Games, sponsor Samsung
Electronics has released 1000 special edition "Gold Premium Phones"
(models SCH-E470, SPH-E3200, and SPH-E3250) and auctioned them online.
The first lot of six phones has been bid up to over one million won
(around $12,000). The phones themselves are not actually gold, except
for a rim around the LCD monitor, but do have the emblem of the Athens
Olympics inscribed as well as special serial numbers that make them
worth money in the increasingly popular world of cell phone
collectables.
All proceeds of the auctions are to be given to an Olympic athlete
who doesn't get a medal but still leaves a "great impression or
delivers deep emotions" to the Koreans, who will vote for their
favorite loser online.

Samsung's VC-RP30W Robotic Vacuum
Samsung's VC-RP30W Robotic Vacuum
12/02/2003 12:23 AMSeveral News agencies such as MobileMag have declared:
Samsung Unveils High-tech Robot Vacuum Cleaner Samsung's
robotic vacuum cleaner, identified as
VC-RP30W, vacuums your house the smart way: it makes a
3D
map and knows
which areas of your house needs cleaning. This is contrary to a
recent article that
says mapping less is better. This is also contrary to popular
robotic vacuums
that just bounce around your house unwittingly with hopes of
eventually vacuuming all the floor. This robot is no dummy. The
battery life
lasts about 50 minutes
a charge and when the battery gets low, it goes back automatically to
the charging station
for a recharge. You can program it to your desired start times to
start when you're away, and
you can even monitor the vacuum from work doing its work with an
internet connection and its
internal camera. With all this robotic intelligence and obvious great
design and crafting, you can guess why there's no mention of price or
availability yet,
but with
camera, internet connection,
charging station, etc, I don't expect it to be as cheap as a Roomba
but at least it's got to be some kind of world's first great
vacuum cleaning robot for
Samsung!

Stopping Spam Patented (Again)
Stopping Spam Patented (Again)
06/02/2004 10:10 AMEarlier this year, we noted that Postini had
receive
d a patent for the incredibly obvious concept of anti-spam
filtering. Well, it looks like they may be in for some competition,
because Network Associates/McAfee has now been awarded a patent for an
idea that (sarcasm alert) no one could have possibly come up with
prior to December 2002 when they applied for it:
us
ing a combination of methods such as "filters, paragraph
hashing, and Bayes rules" to stop spam. What this really means is
that there are now going to be anti-spam patent battles which will
slow down the process of stopping spam, and do no one any good,
other than a few lawyers who will get rich. Why can't these companies
just compete in the marketplace? Still, it would be great if, at some
point, AT&T finally made it clear
why
they patented spamming itself last year.

Now It Turns Out That Burning CDs Is
Patented As Well
12/15/2003 09:21 PMBecause the day just isn't complete unless another silly patent
lawsuit is filed, Optima Technology now believes that
they
own a patent on CD-burning and are suing Roxio for refusing to
license their patent. This fits in with plenty of other patent
lawsuits that have been showing up recently which clearly demonstrate
just how off-course our patent system has become. The purpose of a
patent is to protect and encourage innovation. The idea behind
CD-burning is not innovative, and Roxio didn't come along and steal
the idea from Optima. There are simply too many cases these days of
some company sitting on a patent until someone else discovers the same
thing and then suing them. How that "encourages" innovation is beyond
me. Meanwhile, Optima says they basically plan to sue anyone who has
anything to do with CD burning unless they all come running to license
the patent.

Patented garden plants? I suddenly had visions of a sci-fi future

patented, and trademarked up the wazoo.
I think I'll get a different tree for that spot.

YP-T5 "World's Smallest" YP-T5 flash player, the YP-ST5. Although the
form factor is pretty much the same, the battery life has been bumped
from 8 hours of playback to 20, USB 2.0 support is in, and an updated
firmware (around August or so) will add OGG Vorbis support.
Also, reheated fried calamari has the delicate taste and texture of

this time coming on the "YP-W3L." It's somewhat difficult to tell
where the gold and diamonds are on the thing, but frankly, I like it
more that way. Samsung didn't really skimp on the features, either:
it's probably one of the first mainstream players I've seen that does
MP3, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, WAV and ASF. Not that anyone actually
