Philadelphia is considering adding WiFi boxes to all street lights, making the whole city WiFi alive. What I like best about this idea is how the link to street lights suggests how we should think about this resource: (1) Is it free? No, just as street lighting costs money, it will cost money to put Wifi boxes on street lighting. (2) Is it free. Yes, like lighted streets, and air conditioned city hall, you won't have to pay to enjoy the resource. (3) So it is free and not free: yes, as all great public resources are. And as with all great public resources, this will benefit Philadelphia in ways we cannot begin to imagine. Let the city provide a platform, and watch the entrepreneurs find a million ways to make it valuable. Did anyone have any clue about all the ways the GPS would be used once Ronald Reagan set it free?

Thirteen, Hooking Up

Thirteen, Hooking Up 12/30/2003 12:09 AM
Rob points us to CBC's series on kids Hooking Up. In the post he mentions the film Thirteen, which I saw Thursday night. Thirteen is an excellent movie. The fact that Nikki Reed, one of the two teenage actors, cowrote the somewhat autobiographical story at the age of thirteen makes it even more remarkable. As I commented on Rob's site, if my daughter Abby were 12-15 (thankfully she's only three) I would take her to see the movie then go for a long walk on the north shore to talk about it ... or maybe just quietly think about it...

Acid2: Row Thirteen Revisited

Acid2: Row Thirteen Revisited 04/15/2005 04:16 PM

Ok, I now pass row thirteen. In strict mode I just made comment parsing flip a canClose bit as it encountered pairs of --. For an even number of --, you can close when you encounter a >. That fixes the rendering. I'm not sure this is correct, but hopefully it is. :)

The Acid2 Test, Row Thirteen

The Acid2 Test, Row Thirteen 04/15/2005 03:20 PM

I must admit that I am completely baffled by row thirteen. The row includes a comment that Safari appears to be handling incorrectly, but I have no idea why. There is apparently something I don't know about comment handling. Can someone from WaSP clarify and explain what the heck I'm supposed to do with this line?

<!-- -- --->ERROR<!- ------ ></div></div> <!-- two dashes is what delimits a comment, so the text "->ERROR<!-" earlier on this line is actually part of a comment -->

This particular comment test seems particularly esoteric and pointless to me. It's clear that I'll have to limit this parsing rule to strict mode anyway, since I doubt other browsers make you count hyphens when constructing comments.

I'm a bit perplexed that a test that is supposedly testing features that WaSP considers "essential" for the future Web contains data URLs and esoteric SGML comment rule tests. What about inline-block? I consider that far more essential than whether or not a browser can handle some obscure comment parsing rule.

World Robot Declaration Issued by Japan

World Robot Declaration Issued by Japan 03/06/2004 02:03 AM
The International Robot Fair 2004 started off with a "World Robot Declaration" yesterday. The declaration states three specific expectations that future robots must meet and declares 5 resolutions on what must be done to bring the next generation of robots into existence. It puts into words the Simak-like Japanese philosphy towards robots that we've been aware of in a general sense for years. Basically robots will be the companions of the human race and assist humans physically and psychologically while helping to keep the world safe and peaceful. The full text of the declaration is included below.

Cory Doctorow: Last weekend, I represented EFF at a meeting in Geneva of several disparate activit and non-govermental orgs, working to draft a joint doc called "Future of WIPO," (or, more formally, "Geneva Declaration on the Future of the World Intellectual Property Organization"). This doc is a call to arms to orgs that would see WIPO revisit its role in the world, to take into account the public interest when formulating and promulgating IP policy. The doc has been finalised and is online -- we're collecting signatories for it, and you're invited.
Humanity faces a global crisis in the governance of knowledge, technology and culture. The crisis is manifest in many ways.

* Without access to essential medicines, millions suffer and die;

* Morally repugnant inequality of access to education, knowledge and technology undermines development and social cohesion;

* Anticompetitive practices in the knowledge economy impose enormous costs on consumers and retard innovation;

* Authors, artists and inventors face mounting barriers to follow-on innovation;

* Concentrated ownership and control of knowledge, technology, biological resources and culture harm development, diversity and democratic institutions;

* Technological measures designed to enforce intellectual property rights in digital environments threaten core exceptions in copyright laws for disabled persons, libraries, educators, authors and consumers, and undermine privacy and freedom;

* Key mechanisms to compensate and support creative individuals and communities are unfair to both creative persons and consumers;

* Private interests misappropriate social and public goods, and lock up the public domain.

For a team of collaborators, Groove synchronizes both the sets of applications available in a given context (or "shared space") and the data written by those applications. If you drop your laptop on the floor you can effortlessly recover everything into a fresh instance of Groove on a new machine.

Of course this works only for native Groove apps. Browser history and bookmarks, Outlook settings, and a million other things are handled in a million other ways -- or not handled at all -- because desktop operating systems aren't Groove. A general solution would require OSs that work like Groove, and applications that send messages rather than write files. Well, come to think of it, why not? [Full story at InfoWorld.com]

Still Dependent on Independence Day

Still Dependent on Independence Day 07/03/2004 03:13 PM
Did you ever have one of those moments where you just wanted to haul out the old 12-gauge and blow grapefruit-sized holes through enything even remotely digital in sight? It happens all too often. If I could have found the shells before I cooled off… The bottom line is that my digital dreams of lying around on the porch entertained by streaming audio coming over the Wi-Fi airwaves went kaflooey in spectacular manner. It all started innocently enough when I got my hands on some money. I’d been planning this part of The Grand Upgrade for some time. I’d just go out and buy a Linksys broadband wireless router and a matching ‘.g’ card for my antiquated IBM Thinkpad and I’d be flying high. Right. First up was to get the router in place and running the part of the network that is to remain wired. That only took a 20 minute call to their tech support. Their people are rather obviously of Indian descent, but are capable people with a good deal of patience. I did my best to understand and together, we finally got the thing working. It wasn’t hard, but what I still fail to get is why neither the Quick Start manual nor the main manual had this set of instructions in them. Being quick on the trigger, I took notes on the provedure. I figured I’d better, since the sequence of steps took no logical sequence. Suddenly, it all clicked. I now had every system independently sucking down bytes from the Internet without the chance that taking one down would trash the others. Wonderful. Then I got stupid. Or optimistic, though the two are very close. I decided I’d try setting up the notebook card. Boom! Brick wall. File errors every time I went through the setup. Then I took a look in the Hardware Manager, since I had a good power light on the thing, just no ‘Link’ lights. More bad news- a yellow and black exclamation point. Further investigation revealed that “The device cannot be enabled because IRQ Steering is not enabled on this machine” or words to that effect. Worse yet, the message encouraged me to change the settings in the “machine BIOS” in order to enable IRQ Steering. Since the machine is old enough that it originally came with Windows 95, I leave it to you to guess how effective that would be. Oops, sorry, last BIOS update released by Big Blue was in 1998 and had been in place for quite some time. Another call to the good offshore folks showed me that without IRQ steering, there just wasn’t going to be any fun stuff like a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet. End of story. So, the card was reluctantly returned to the retail wonderland it came from and I gave up (for now) on my digital dream. Some day when I get the needed cash and there isn’t any domestic disaster lurking in the wings, I’ll do what I need to, which is to ditch the old clunker and buy a newer old clunker that can support my need for surfing. So ends the tale of failed Independence for Independence day.
