Yale Students Accused Of Copying Dating

Well, here's a legal test for the students at Yale's law school... at what point does imitation cross the line from flattery to copyright infringement? Apparently, a group of Wesleyan students are accusing some Yale students of stealing content from their student dating service. The Wesleyan students set up a special dating site for Wesleyan students that tries to match up students by having them answer a series of questions. They've since sold the program to other universities, and even spoke with a group at Yale, though the discussions never went anywhere. Sometime after that, the Wesleyan students discovered a Yale dating site that looked quite similar and appeared to include many of the same questions used by the Wesleyan system.

So Yale students have a dating website for those who are "matched, single, or looking for a little somethin' on the side." Unfortunately, the Yale College Council, which launched the site in February 2004, is being accused of stealing the HTML code from a precursor site at Wesleyan, and the Yale Student Activities Commission may have ripped off Weslyan's dating questionnaires. Happily, the Herald article confirms that while the website might be in trouble, "the courts will never shut down the most reliable dating hotspot at Yale" -- the library.

Yale Students Replace Kazaa With Humans
Swapping CDs
02/10/2004 05:32 PM
Sometimes, there are tradeoffs between efficiency and privacy. Lots of people have different ideas for ways to avoid getting sent an RIAA lawsuit if they're sharing music, but a student at Yale has worked out a system that isn't particularly efficient - but is much more difficult for the RIAA to track down. It's a "file sharing" website where people set up a time and place to meet to physically exchange CDs - which each person can then go off and copy (or not). The article describing the system appears in rival Harvard's newspaper, and thus they're pretty eager to point out why this system might be illegal. Of course, it isn't actually illegal. It's not even facilitating illegal activity as the point is just to let people swap legitimate CDs, which is completely legal. If they then go off and make copies, that's a legal issue that each individual needs to deal with, but the site is not involved with that aspect of the transaction.

Site

A Dating Site That Doesn't Need Its Own
Site
05/04/2004 06:25 PM
People are starting to realize that Google is more of a platform than just a search engine. With all the focus on social networks these days, Google still doesn't search in those networks. So, one company is trying to use the power of Google and public websites to build their own open social networking dating site. Basically, they get you to fill out a typical dating profile, which generates some metadata that you include on your own website. Then, they've apparently built out some sort of front-end that uses Google to search sites that include that metadata. What's unclear is how they make sure that Google will index the right sites that include the data. The business model for the company is to show Google's contextual ads along with the results. It's an interesting idea, but I wonder how comfortable some people are with putting that sort of info on the "publicly" available web. While it's really not all that different than on a dating site, a dating site at least is somewhat hidden behind a protective barrier, and lets the user hide some of their info.

Anti-Competitive Dating Site Law

States Move Forward With Pointless
Anti-Competitive Dating Site Law
03/28/2005 06:33 PM
Last month, there was a story about how some online dating site that claims to do background checks on its members (though, they don't actually check to make sure the person is who they say they are) was trying to get state politicians to pass laws requiring such checks or force other dating or social networking sites to put a huge notice saying: "WARNING: WE HAVE NOT CONDUCTED A FELONY-CONVICTION SEARCH OR FBI SEARCH ON THIS INDIVIDUAL." This law is obviously completely pointless other than to try to make life difficult for the competition of this one tiny dot com dating site. However, it appears that a number of clueless politicians are buying it, and just such a law is moving forward in a number of states, with Michigan leading the way. What's amusing (though, in other ways, scary) is the rationale one of the Michigan sponsors is giving: "There are inherent dangers in the whole area of the Internet. Something needs to be done." This seems like a fairly typic al political response. Something isn't perfect, so a law must be passed -- even if it will have no impact and (if anything) likely make the situation worse, not better. Of course, for the dating site that is pushing all of these laws, it's only going to backfire on them if the law passes -- because then those other sites will start doing background checks, and this site will lose its one tiny, pointless differentiating factor. You have to wonder if they pushed for the legislation with the belief that there was no way it would pass -- but they were likely to get some press out of it. Now what will they do if it actually does pass?

(comparatively) stupid white men at

(comparatively) stupid white men at
Harvard and Yale
08/28/2004 11:44 AM

A friend was asking me about some of her colleagues who had joined Mensa and I said that anyone who hangs around a decent college is already effectively a member because you only need a fairly low SAT score to get admitted to Mensa (turned out to be 1250 if you took the pre-1995 test and the new wimpy test for today's youth is not accepted at all; see http://members.sh aw.ca/delajara/criteria.html).  Then I tried to figure out what average SAT scores prevailed at colleges today and the Web search brought up this interesting page from a 1998 Brookings Institution report.  What I found most striking was the discrimination against Asian-Americans at the elite old-line universities.  Harvard is the 2nd worst offender in this regard.  An Asian kid has to have an SAT score 65 point higher than a white kid to get into Harvard.  Maybe this explains George W's illustrious career at Yale?  (not listed in the table but presumably similar to Harvard)

[Page 438 of the same study is also interesting.  It concludes that being black or hispanic rather than white at the "most selective colleges" is "comparable to the effect of having ... a total SAT score of 1400 rather than 1000".  So if you are a generic white family and want to get your kids into college it might be time to go down to the courthouse and change your last name to "Hernandez".  The college admissions staff don't get deeply into geneaology, do they?  Just learn enough Spanish to say "Here is a check for $40,000 to cover the first year of tuition, room, and board."  Then your kids could change their names back right after graduation from their last degree, in order not to suffer discrimination from employers who might think "they got in just because they were Hispanic" and to conceal themselves from pesky Alumni Association donation demands.  With a system this heavily based on race and name changes as economical as they are I'm surprised that more families don't game the system.  Perhaps there is a business opportunity here...]

Tiger Mail screenshot and user interface

Tiger Mail screenshot and user interface 03/30/2005 05:35 PM
I find the screenshot of Mail for OS X 10.4 fascinating.

The first thing I notice is that the mailboxes aren’t in a drawer anymore, which I think is a good thing.

A few other things:

1. The toolbar background appears to be some sort of gradient. As in a metal window, there is no line between the top of the window and the toolbar buttons. But it’s not metal. It looks new. (The screenshot of system preferences has the same look.)

2. The toolbar icons appear to be embedded in some kind of new button. Whether it’s a new button style or just a look for the Mail toolbar icons I can’t tell from the screenshot.

3. The mailbox list has a background color. This may or may not be customizable—you can’t tell from the screenshot. It’s a good guess that, if customizable, the color shown is the default color. This is interesting because I can’t think of any other source lists from Apple that have colored backgrounds by default.

4. The vertical splitview dividing the mailboxes from the rest of the window is not a standard splitview. (Unless it’s new in OS X 10.4.) (Actually, I’m just assuming it’s a splitview.) Note how the apparent thickness of the divider is zero. The horizontal splitview looks more like a standard splitview—though I’ve squinted at it a bit and started to wonder if that’s true.

5. I don’t see a status bar. (It could be that, like Safari, the status bar is hidden by default. Or it could be that it was added after this screenshot was taken. Or maybe there just isn’t one. I don’t know.)

So... what do you think?

(Note: remember to respect any and all non-disclosure agreements. We’re just looking at public screenshots. And these screenshots may or may not resemble the final, shipping versions.)
