eBay initiative unites industry leaders
and environmental groups to reduce
e-waste
01/06/2005 05:56 PMeBay today launched its Rethink Initiative that helps consumers and
businesses learn about the different e-waste alternatives, such as
recycling and refurbishing, and makes it easy to put this knowledge
into action.
The new program acts to coordinate efforts by industry leaders Apple,
Gateway, HP, IBM, Intel Corp. and Ingram Micro with the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, the non-profit Silicon Valley Toxics
Coalition, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service, among other participants,
and millions of eBay users to confront the problem of e-waste - unused
or obsolete computers that may pose environmental hazards when
disposed of in landfills.
The centerpiece of the program, which was launched at the Consumer
Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, is the new website designed
for education and communication, www.ebay.com/rethink.
"eBay's millions of users can be a powerful force for good," said Meg
Whitman, eBay president and CEO. "The Rethink Initiative will educate
consumers on how to properly dispose of or recycle the millions of
tons of e-waste they confront each year. We're extremely excited about
the positive role eBay's user community will play in confronting this
environmental dilemma."
Industry analyst Gartner estimates that in the U.S. alone, about
133,000 PCs per day are currently being retired and replaced by their
original owners. These systems may contain hazardous materials, such
as plastic, lead, cadmium, chromium, and mercury that need to be
handled in an environmentally responsible manner. Yet Americans'
understanding of recycling and reuse options remains limited - only
about 10 percent of unwanted PCs in the U.S. are recycled, according
to the Grass Roots Recycling Network.

Adam & Tonya at New Mexico
User Groups -- Tonya and I have never traveled to the
southwest United States, so we're particularly looking forward to a
trip to visit not one, not two, but three New Mexico-based Macintosh
user groups in early May. At 7:00 PM on 03-May-05, I'll be speaking in
Albuquerque to the AppleQuerque Macintosh User Group. Then, on the
afternoon of 04-May-05, I'll address the Los Alamos Macintosh User
Group, and at 7:00 PM that evening, the Santa Fe Macintosh User Group.
I'm planning to talk primarily about iPhoto and wireless security;
Tonya will be on hand to chat about Take Control and electronic
publishing in general. If you're in the area, come say hello!

Information Diffusion Through Blogspace
Information Diffusion Through Blogspace
04/08/2005 10:21 AMInformation Diffusion Through Blogspace by Daniel Gruhl, R.
Guha, David Liben-Nowell, and Andrew Tomkinshttp
://www.tomkinshome.com/papers/2Web/idib.html/idib.htmlAbstractWe study the dynamics of information
propagation in environments of low-overhead personal publishing, using
a large collection of weblogs over time as our example domain. We
characterize and model this collection at two levels. First, we
present a macroscopic characterization of topic propagation through
our corpus, formalizing the notion of long-running ``chatter'' topics
consisting recursively of ``spike'' topics generated by outside world
events, or more rarely, by resonances within the community. Second, we
present a microscopic characterization of propagation from individual
to individual, drawing on the theory of infectious diseases to model
the flow. We propose, validate, and employ an algorithm to induce the
underlying propagation network from a sequence of posts, and report on
the results. This has been added to
Bots, Blogs and News Aggregators
presentation.

Technological diffusion patterns
Technological diffusion patterns
08/09/2004 06:02 AM
I get this feeling that the diffusion of new services and
technologies such as blogs and social network services are not normal.
Normal diffusion patterns are sort of bell curves that track mass
media attention and other factors including effort on the supply side.
With social network systems, there seem to be regional explosions of
users. Orkut now has more Brazilians than Americans and I have yet to
hear a good explanation of why. There are very uneven proportion of
bloggers in different regions. The last I looked, Poland and Iran seem
to have an unnaturally high number of blogs. Does the digital word of
mouth nature of social software make it's diffusion faster (viral) and
non-linear? Is the diffusion of other technologies in these markets
and segments that are networked also change?
Is there anyone doing good work in this area? I'm sure marketers
have their theories on this. I can imagine anthropologists and
sociologists also studying this. What is the right way to study
this?

Mizuka just asked me if I had heard about some guy who was busted
for making tons of money trading stocks who claims to be a
time-traveler. The story was that he would show them the time-machine
if they let him go. She said her Japanese friends were talking about
it. I laughed and checked Google News with an assortment of keywords
with no results. I wandered over to #joiito
. Soon enough nichlas came up with a link to
a WWN article from March, 2003 about the story. Just as I was
wondering if this was something to blog about, KevinMarks page-slapped
us with the snopes.com entry
from April 2003 debunking the story.
I would really love to see the path that this silly story took over
the last 1 1/2 years to get from WWN to me via the Japanese girls
gossip network.
