Elastic, not sticky

Elastic, not sticky

Elastic, not sticky 07/04/2002 07:23 AM

"Elastic sites work well because they embrace the "Webness" of the Web...they allow people to interact and communicate with each other as they prefer to do in the real world. Human relationships are elastic in nature. Like a clingy friend, nothing is worse than a needy Web site sucking all of your time away and not letting you spend any time on other sites. [...] Many companies can't offer products or services with the quality or necessity of Google or the crack-like nature of weblogs, but they can stop worrying so much about fencing customers in like cattle and start dealing with them in human terms."

A bit of a sticky wicket?

A bit of a sticky wicket? 04/02/2005 08:47 AM

This may be one of the most awkward posts I've ever written, and I'll probably get it wrong and need to revise it later. So if you prefer to read something that's finished that won't be edited, come back and read it tomorrow.

First, the easy part. I won't be able to participate in the Reuters debate next Tuesday in NY. Why? Well, there was a change in personnel, Jay Rosen had a schedule conflict, and the replacement they chose is someone I don't want to have a public discussion with about ethics and credibilty (or a private one for that matter). So the only way out is for me to recuse myself, which I have done.

I guess that wasn't so hard after all. ";->"

Icky Sticky Leaky PHPloat

Icky Sticky Leaky PHPloat 11/03/2003 01:01 AM
After running PHP5 beta 2 for 2 days on Apache 1.3 (multi-threaded SAPI on Windows), I was surprised to find that the process was taking 500 Mb. There must be lots of memory leaks. I'm pretty happy that most PHP code just runs, but obviously it's not production ready.

Now the hard work starts, how to integrate new PHP5 functionality without impacting old PHP4 code. After thinking a while, I realize there are only a few things I can do to write portable code:

  • In PHP5, we use __clone() to duplicate objects. To make this portable, simply check the PHP_VERSION:
      $obj2 = (PHP_VERSION >= 5) ? $this->__clone() : $this;

  • Error-handling can be encapsulated in a separate function, and conditionally included based on PHP version. Eg.
    if (PHP_VERSION >= 5) include("exceptions.inc.php");
    else include("error.inc.php");

Unfortunately, most other features require explicit use of keywords that are illegal in PHP4, eg. private, protected, implements, etc. These require maintaining a separate codebase for both versions of PHP, or some special pre-processing to be done on the code depending on the versions. Does anyone have a better suggestion?

PS: I will be releasing a new version of ADOdb soon, one that should be compatible with PHP5.

Corn syrup: the sticky kiiller 04/26/2004 02:07 AM
Atkinsians know that the devil has a name and that it is High Fructose Coorn Syrup, Elevator of Insulin and Most High Gycemic. It's validating, therefore, to see some sciency-type news about how bad corn syrup is for us, how it's creating a nation of diabetics, and how it accounts for 10 percent of the average American's daily calorie intake. Yow.
"This shows the increase in the past 20 years is almost exclusively carbohydrates and certainly corn syrup consumption has increased dramatically."

Gross said he was not "picking on the corn syrup industry," but added, "It is hard to ignore the fact that 20 percent of our carbohydrates are coming from corn syrup -- 10 percent of our total calories."

Cool blog about the designs baristas can make in the foamy milk that sits on top of your caffe latte. My favorite coffee hang in Los Angeles is Urth (even though I can never get a table), in part because their coffee is dark, sweet, earthy, and delicious -- and in part because the guys who make it draw little hearts and zigzags in the foam.

Latte art, part two

Latte art, part two 04/25/2004 07:22 PM
Following up on this earlier Boingboing post, an anonymous reader points us to this cool news article about a guy in Australia who one-ups all those sucka baristas makin' hearts and zigzags in the caffe lattes.
"When you pour the milk in and the cream hits, it's just like a blank canvas on which to paint," the 36-year old said. Mr Phillips and fiancee Bernadette Farrugia started Flavors of Lakhoum in Swan St five years ago and he dabbled with the idea while pouring coffee.

"Sometimes you see swirls and patterns when you're pouring the coffee in, and one day I was pouring it and I saw an eye appear," he said. "From there I just drew in a mouth and ears. I've been slowly practising since then, but have got pretty good in the last few months - every month I find ways to add more detail."
