Making Web Communities Work

Variables for Understanding Online Communites: Whether or not a
Web community thrives or sputters had always been kind of a
hit-or-miss affair. This article identifies the 12 most important
variables.
The twelve variables we've selected are most likely not
all that exist, just the ones we find most important in our thinking
right now. These variables struck us as important ways in which
communities are differentiated despite the type of software chosen to
carry a given community.

Fedora Core 2: Making it work
07/06/2004 03:41 AMRecently I concluded my review of Fedora Core 2 (FC2) on Linux.com
with the words, "It's an important step in the evolution of Linux ...
but I won't be using it for production work anytime soon." What a
difference a month makes -- I am now using FC2 for production work.
Here's how I got around the distro's deficiencies.

Making Open Webmail work
Making Open Webmail work
01/06/2004 03:18 AMRecently I was asked to provide Internet e-mail to a large segment of
our hospital community. The mail had to be standards-based to provide
the widest compatibility base possible for the 3,000 people who might
have need of it. It had to be Web-based, but not overly complicated,
and it had to employ open source (read "free") tools to help keep the
budget down. Finally, it had to be secure, to comply with HIPAA
regulations. To meet those requirements, I deployed Open Webmail,
Sendmail, and Red Hat Linux 9 on a 1U IBM Linux machine.

07/17/2004 09:01 PMSusan Mernit has some
good ideas on how it might work. Example:
Combine the NY Times or Washington Post with Technorati and Feedster.
She asks:
"Why don't we see a major media outlet that
will file lots of stories during the election find a way to work with
Technorati or Feedster so they can have almost real-time links
reflecting people's comments on--and links to--the stories--right on
their web site?"

Making USB storage devices work
seamlessly under Linux
12/09/2003 03:51 AMWhat do you do when your ISP tells you the reason your Windows box
can't connect to the network is because its network drivers got
corrupted? You download new drivers using your Linux client and use
Sneakernet to move them to Windows. USB storage devices like
M-Systems' DiskOnKey are extremely useful for ad hoc chores like this,
and I was lucky to have one on hand. But how to make Linux mount the
device as seamlessly as Windows does?

IHateWork Website Accused Of Making
People Hate Work
04/21/2004 02:09 PMSome people really do need to get a hobby. A group of small
businesses in the UK is apparently
angry at an amusement park for coming up with a silly ad
campaign that tries to get people to visit
IHateWork.co.uk. The
Federation of Small Businesses actually believes that this site is
making people hate work and skip out for a day to go to the amusement
park. Do they actually believe that people who were thrilled with
going into work every day suddenly realized, after looking at this
site, that they really hate their job and should skip out for a day?
Instead of getting all upset about this, perhaps they should have just
taken a day off and gone to, I don't know... an amusement park?

Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much
Towards Work
Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much
Towards Work
11/14/2003 02:51 PMOne of the downsides to the fact that people
can
work whenever they want is that it's sometimes hard for people to
stop working. According to a study done in Europe, many overly
stressed out workers are
asking their bosses to
cut their hours and salary just to gain back some control over
their lives. Meanwhile, many bosses in IT are increasingly worried
that their staff is going to burn out. Of course, a lot of that could
be solved if companies hired more people, but they still seem hesitant
to do so.

Wikipedia Needs $20,000
Wikipedia Needs $20,000
12/29/2003 11:47 PMLetter to
our readers and contributors: This is either heartbeaking or
inspiring, I'm not sure which. It turns out that Wikipedia is failing under the
load created by its popularity.
...the three servers that currently host all of
Wikimedia's projects in all languages are simply not enough,
especially as two of them have turned out to have hardware defects.
... I estimate that $20,000 in hardware would get us to a point where
we have reserves to handle the failure of any one machine.
Additionally, we would be well-poised to continue our track record of
astounding growth.
That's the heartbreaking part, since Wikipedia is one of the most
perfect Web resources ever created. But looking in on this page right
now (10 p.m. CST), I'm seeing "Money raised: $23,382.17." If that is
an accurate figure, and the Web community has altruistically pulled
Wikipedia out of a downward spiral, then it makes me glad to be
alive.
If someone can confirm that Wikipedia's needs have been met, please
post confirmation.

12/17/2004 06:37 PM“Reference Publishing” is the business of publishing “reference
works”: dictionaries, encyclopedias, and the like. By definition, it
includes the
Wikipedia, which
is intended as a reference work. I have
remarked kindly on
the Wikipedia and
taken exception when
it came under attack. There have been a lot of voices chiming in on
this issue; herewith a survey and, based on my years in reference
publishing and because I care profoundly, I’ll add my own
observations...
A Wikipedia Blog
A Wikipedia Blog
01/16/2004 11:33 AMI'm tempted to start a blog solely for linking to great Wikipedia entries. One of my
morning rituals is to hit the random page
link at Wikipedia and see where it takes me. I've found some
fantastic articles that beat anything in a paid resource.
Take a browse through the Billiant
Prose page and see gems like Sniper, Crushing by
Elephant (morbidly fascinating), Batman, Dick Tracy, James Bond, etc.
You could make an entire blog out of links to great Wikipedia entries.
According to the statistics page, there are almost 200,000 entries.
That should keep you busy for a while.
Someone should do this.
