LookSmart Buys Furl -- The Search
Stickiness Battles Are On
09/23/2004 03:21 AMWell, look at that. Just yesterday, we were pointing out how Ask
Jeeves was adding features to store and annotate the websites you like
and asked if
people
wouldn't just prefer to use an independent offering like Furl,
rather than be tied down to a specific search property. Whoops.
Forget we said that. Furl has just announced (no news sites have it
yet, but we're including the text of the email after the jump) that
they've been acquired by Looksmart, the also-ran paid-search,
paid-inclusion search engine provider. So, this is yet another search
provider trying to increase stickiness by letting users do more with
their search results. They're also offering five gigs of storage. If
you hadn't realized it yet, this space is getting more interesting
every day.

Jon Udell: Extreme design versus extreme
programming
06/18/2002 08:16 AMI've just returned from the What's Next conference in Brattleboro,
Vermont, where I gave a pair of talks (one on web services, one on
application servers). The keynote speaker for the day was Alan Cooper,
designer of Visual Basic, author of several books, and founder of a
company that specializes in interaction design.
Cooper's view is that the kinds of disasters that have always plagued
the industry -- most recently, the catastrophic outcomes of many CRM
(customer relationship management) systems -- are a result neither of
poor strategy, nor of poor engineering, but of a failure to properly
coordinate the two. The missing piece in his view is product planning
and design, done according to a methodology that Cooper has devised
and that his company practices. This methodology aligns itself with
Colonel John Boyd's OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) loop,
fashionable in military circles.

MTV gets cold feet, or does it?

This turns into one of those cases where researching a story gets
weirder. The documentary
Supe
r Size Me centers on a documentary filmmaker's 30 day experience
eating nothing but McDonalds. The film is doing
amazingly well
as a limited release documentary grossing more per screen than
high-budget Troy. Here is the weird part, Reuters has
picked up on a distributor
press release claiming that MTV is refusing to air advertising for
Super Size Me because the film is "disparaging to
fast-food restaurants". The Reuters short seems to have quite a
bit of legs. However a Hollywood Reporter
article details MTVs side of the story placing
the blame on the film's distributor. Is this really a case of a
network getting cold feet? Or is it a case of distributor trying to
pull the "too edgy for MTV" moneymaking ploy? And what is
with the continually morphing Reuters clip that is just now being
tossed onto doorsteps and stuffed into newsboxes across North America?
(The film was previously discussed on metafilter
back in January. iChat AV at 35,000 Feet

So far it's been 15 minutes, and at least one person went by without
saying anything (though she did wonder why I did not want to go to
lunch yet.) I will keep you updated.
(Oh yeah, and my coworkers reading this weblog: it does not count if
you read it from here first. So nyah.)

60 minutes: Close to an hour. My feet are definitely getting cold. I
wonder if there's "email yoga"? (By the way - I have about
four Gmail invitations left, so if you want to test drive it, drop me
some email.)
100 minutes: I'll now attempt to go to the toilet. Wish me luck.'
102 minutes: back. Nothing.

downer for gravity-control researchers. “Could astronauts take a
leaf out of H. G. Wells’s book The First Men in the Moon, and
use spacecraft propelled by antigravity devices? Some see the idea as
science fiction, but major space agencies take it seriously. In 2001,
the European Space Agency (ESA) commissioned two scientists to
