Morse Code Gets The @ Sign - But It's
Too Long
04/15/2004 02:20 AMThe whole point of the @ symbol is that it's shorthand for the word
"at." So, plenty of people (well, actually not that many care at all)
are confused as to why the first update to Morse Code in 60 years to
include
the @ symbol has it much longer than just tapping out the word
"at." The real issue is that "at" is apparently the same code as
"w," though no one seems to have asked if anyone was actually confused
by this. For those who care, the @ symbol can be tapped out as
dit-dah-dah-dit-dah-dit.

So to encourage Japanese people to actually spend 120 yen
(about $1.09) on a single can of soda, Coca-Cola today announced the
"Cmode 2" vending machine, which allows customers with cellular phones
to purchase drinks "cashlessly" one of three ways - two-dimensional
barcodes, infrared, and the FeliCa contactless IC system. Though
cashless "Cmode" vending machines have been in various places
throughout Japan since April of 2002, these are the first vending
machines to support contactless IC as a method of transfer.
With drink names like "Qoo," "SCORPION," and "Lovebody," who could
resist?

12/08/2003 11:39 AMI have a cellphone with Cingular, and opted to get the
extra line for 9.99 a month (a good deal). What I learned is this
(also true with Verizon): if you get a phone or an extra line, the
first year, you cannot cancel the contract. Well, you can, but it
costs more to cancel than to keep it open. In this case, they charge
200$ to cancel the contract, versus $80 to keep it open 8 more months,
after which cancelling is free.
By the way, if you're still with Verizon, consider Cingular. They
seem distinctly less evil, for now.

Cellphone jammer
11/15/2003 01:14 PMThe SH066P Personal Cell Phone Jammer is disguised as a phone, has an
effective radius of 10-15 yards, and comes in US and worldwide
frequency-flavors. They're illegal to use in most places, but not
illegal to possess, build or sell. I'm as bugged by mobile abuse as
the next person, but using one of these strikes me as a mcuh greater
breach of the social contract than talking too loud or subjecting your
coachmates to the default Nokia ring.

Coke has received FCC approval for a GPS-equipped cellphone that fits
in a can of soda and which will instantly connect those who discover
it to an operator who will tell them that they've already won an SUV.
The GPS then allows the Coke prize-patrol to home in on them and get a
reaction shot.

Sony Considering PSP, Cellphone Hybrid
Sony Considering PSP, Cellphone Hybrid
06/10/2004 07:55 AM
Speaking of the N-Gage, Sony is now making stink
about various versions of the PSP being released in the future that
may be hybrid integrations of the PSP and cellphones, PDAs, etc. They
let on about this a little at E3. Remember those clear, plastic
overlays they had over the top of all the demo models? At least one of
those had the look of a cellphone keypad. Portagame has a
partially-translated interview with SCEI CTO Masa Chatani, where he
also mentions that Sony still hasn't finalized exactly which screens
the PSP will be using. I wonder if that worldwide LCD shortage is
freaking them out yet.
