Vint Cerf Wants Standardized Email
Authentication
06/17/2004 08:53 PMIf you hadn't received the message yet (perhaps because it was lost in
all that spam), email sender authentication is coming. The only
problem is that
too
many companies are implementing it in too many different ways.
Now, even Vint Cerf, who apparently believes public floggings of
spammers are the best possible solution (he was probably joking, but
I'm sure many would support this sort of punishment), is saying that
everyone needs
to get together on a single email authentication standard. Of
course, there still is some concern that switching to authenticated
email will break certain internet applications. However, it's pretty
clear that much of our basic email is now broken anyway. As long as
people are aware that changes will need to be made, authenticated
email sounds like a step in the right direction.
Open Source 802.1X Authentication
Open Source 802.1X Authentication
04/14/2004 03:46 PMMatthew Gast has filed a series of four articles on using 802.1X with
open-source projects to create PEAP authenticated networks: Matthew is
one of the best writers on the subject of enterprise authentication,
and author of 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide. His four
articles at O'Reilly Network walk through his efforts to make the
open-source xsupplicant 802.1X client create a successful PEAP
(Protected EAP) tunnel and authentication with dynamic WEP keys. His
efforts helped patch an incompatibility between xsupplicant and
Microsoft's IAS server, making xsupplicant a more widely usable
product. [link via Douglas Burns]...

Advertisers Agree On Standardized Ad
Tracking System To Better Spy On You
Advertisers Agree On Standardized Ad
Tracking System To Better Spy On You
08/17/2004 05:02 PMAs TV execs are slowly starting to realize that the
traditi
onal 30-second-commercial-broadcast-to-millions-of-homes model of
advertising is dying, advertising execs are trying to help move
them along by finally
agreeing to a standardized tagging system so that
all advertisers can uniquely identify advertisements. Initially, this
should make it easier to make sure the right commercials show at the
right time, but it also opens up plenty of other possibilities -- some
good, some bad. For example, it could make it easier to better
customize advertising. An advertiser could easily designate multiple
versions of an advertisement for different audiences, and the ID
system could easily drop the proper ad into place for the proper
audience. Another good idea (though, not suggested in the article,
and unlikely to be implemented) would be to build up a big database of
publicly available commercials. The amount of traffic a site
like AdCritic used to get should show that, even if people are
skipping TV ads on their TiVo, they still want to seek out and find
the good TV commercials. This system would create a perfect way to
classify the ads so they could be in one big central database,
allowing
more people to view the good ones. Of course, instead
of that, it appears the advertisers are drooling about the possibility
of tying this AD-ID to RFID so they can somehow tell that you bought
product X after watching commercial Y. The article talks openly about
how exciting an opportunity this is for advertisers, which shows just
how backwards their thinking is. If they want to use these new
technologies, instead of telling us how they're going to use them to
spy on us, tell us how they'll make our lives better.

diagnosing network problems because it not only indicates the current
status of the network but also lets you visually compare this with the
history of network utilization.

I
must presume, when looking at the prices for the 'Meshcube,' that
"199,90 EUR" really means about €200, not €20,000, because
as cool as a tiny, mesh network computer is, I don't think there's any
way I'd pay 20 large for one. Mesh networks are like generic WiFi
networks, except that as you continue to add nodes -- like the little
Meshcubes, for instance -- the network can expand out, without many of
the limitations of traditional wireless networks with repeaters. There
are other differences, too, but for now we can just enjoy a cute bug
computer with no moving parts, a 400MHz MIPS processor, and two WiFi
interfaces all crammed into a 7 x 5 x 7cm cube.

The creator of open source operating system Linux , Linus Torvalds
,
asked Linux developers to acknowledge a
Developer's Certificate of Origin (DCO) . The DCO
specifies the authorship of each contribution to the Linux code, while
making clear the coverage of intellectual property under the General
Public License (
GPL ).
This increased
formalization of a major open source project is possibly in
response to the series of lawsuits filed by the SCO
Group , which turn on claimed ambiguities in the licensing and
authorship structures of Linux. Many observers do not
see the DCO as establishing total legal immunity.

fruit of their efforts at the end of the week: The project is an
open-source effort to provide mesh networking with no center. The
system is self configuring among nodes which need no non-volatile or
permanent storage. To set up a CUWiN network, you burn a CD with the
0.5.5 software later this week and use it to boot a computer with a
support wireless card. The system finds nearby nodes, creates tables,
and establishes itself as part of the network. The software is free
and open source. The full press release is after the jump....

The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style,

promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public.
