Tame the Tech Training at the Next SLS
Tech Summit
04/27/2004 12:31 AM

I am most pleased to announce that Michael Stephens and Bob Lewandowski from the St. Joseph County Public Library will be presenting at the next SLS Tech Summit! Come see their infamous SJCPL Staff Day 2003 video if nothing else, but I guarantee you'll come away with a lot more. Oh, and we'll be taking them out for dinner afterwards if you'd like to join us.

Staff and User Technology Training

"Two technology trainers from the St. Joseph County Public Library in South Bend, IN, will discuss how they motivate staff and library users for technology training, including Internet basics, Web searching and applications. How do we engage our learners? How do we design training that carries with them back to their desks or homes and translates to useful skills. Session will include examples and a sample training module."

Wednesday, May 19, 2004
1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
At SLS Headquarters, Burr Ridge
Cost: Free!

Great day with Michael Stephens and Bob Lewandowski (Bob, you need a blog!) today! I'm going to try and bring them back for a duplicate session on tech training for staff and patrons this fall, so Chicagoland area librarians should watch for that. Bonus points: you get to see their video!

I always enjoy talking with them, and Aaron even joined us. Good food, great company! Picture s on the moblog.

BTW, don't forget to check out Michael's Ten Tips for Technology Trainers in the Trenches!

And on a final note, it became painfully obvious today that my member libraries could use a "tech training" group, so we're going to discuss starting one at SLS. I'll keep you posted.

RFIDs Used To Secretly Track Officials
At Tech Summit
12/15/2003 02:26 AM
Every time people write about the potential for RFID chips to be misused, people come along and say that the possibility of them to be misused is pretty slim, and people should just calm down. While we agree that some of the anti-RFID rants have gone a bit overboard, the threat of the technology being secretly used to track people might not be so overblown. A report coming out late last week discovered that b adges used at the World Summit on the Information Society last week included RFIDs for tracking attendees. The attendees were apparently unaware the badges included these chips. The article is a little confusing, and does raise some questions. First, since the people who figured this out snuck into the summit, some of the article focuses on the poor security that let these people get official badges with fake identification - and the article shifts back and forth between the two stories as if they're related. The article also doesn't explain how they determined that there was an RFID chip and what it was used for. While the article claims that people at the conference were "tracked" by these chips - it's unclear that's what actually happened. They seem to indicate that attendees could have been tracked - but not that they actually were tracked. Still, it does point out some of the problems with putting RFID chips in everything. Perhaps people need to be looking more seriously at technology that might stop the "bad" aspect of RFIDs, such as a blocker chip that lets users only allow specific RFIDs to work when they want or need them to.

Women Into Tech, But Not Into Tech
Jargon

Women Into Tech, But Not Into Tech
Jargon
09/07/2004 05:03 AM
While there have been some stories in the past suggesting that women are just as into gadgets as men, a new study in the UK suggests that even if that's true, they're not as on top of the gadget jargon as guys. Nearly all women in the study (96%) said they "lacked confidence" when a discussion turned technical, and most claimied they had no clue what words like kbps, ISP and googling meant. Only half of the women surveyed knew that 512kbps was approximately 10 times faster than dialup, while nearly 80% of the guys did. Of course, it wasn't so much lack of knowledge, but lack of concern. When asked about their broadband connection, women generally said: "It works, it's fast - that's all I need to know."
