Okay, here's the deal. My parental units will be visiting the San Francisco Bay Area (well, me, and I happen to live in the Bay Area) in a little while--early June to be exact. This will be their third visit. In the past we've been to Sequoia National Park, Yosemite National Park (more), The Hearst Castle, The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Big Sur, Pebble Beach, a brief visit to Napa, and a lot of the local stuff as well (San Francisco,...

MySQL Talk Ideas Needed 02/10/2004 02:49 AM
Well, the deadline for talk submissions at the annual O'Reilly Open Source Convention just passed (I hadn't noticed--I blame being busy). It's in Portland again this year, in late July. The folks at O'Reilly have asked me for talk ideas, so I figured I'd pose the question to anyone reading this who might have an opinion on the matter. If you were going to be at OSCON this year, what MySQL talks would you most like to see? What topics...

Northern Magic

Northern Magic 03/15/2003 10:14 PM
Diane Stuemer , an Ottawa area entrepreneur, and her husband reevaluated their priorities in the early 90's after Diane was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and her husband had a work related accident. After her cancer went into remission, and fearful that her 3 children would grow up without remembering her, the family took the bold decision to pack up everything and circumnavigate the world. Despite having less than 4 days of sailing experience, the family took to the seas with great enthusiasm.

The Northern Magic became the Steumer's home for 4 years as they travelled around the world. During that time Diane wrote a series of weekly dispatches to the readers of her hometown's newspaper. It became a tradition in many Ottawa households to read Diane's column in the saturday paper while dreaming of the exotic locals she was writing about (a sharp contrast from Ottawa's winters).

In those 4 years, readers got to experience Herbert (the husband) become a master mechanic, Diane adapt to life afloat, and the 3 sons grow up. When the Stuemers finally arrived home in Ottawa in August of 2001 they where greeted by thousands of well-wishers.

Sadly, Ottawa residents learned early in February that Diane had been readmitted to hospital where she was fighting a very aggressive melanoma battle. Today, Diane succumbed to her illness and passed away.

During their voyage, the entire family took on several projects in the countries they visited which are still active today. What amazes me about Diane is the experiences she lived through with her children, the memories they will cherish and the lasting effect their travels will have on the people they met.

Northern exposure

Create your own visited country map or write about it on the open travel guide.

I'm seeing a certain bias towards the northern hemisphere of our globe. And still so many wonderful places to see! The thought is at the same time a bit depressing, yet joyful. I always hate the preparations before travel: packing, ticket hassles, looking for the passport... But once I'm actually in the plane, squashed in a space smaller than a phone booth, squeezed between an 8-year old hyperactive girl and a 200 kg fat man, eating a meal which tastes slightly better than the cardboard box it comes in, all of it becomes worth the while: Because I love traveling, seeing new places, hearing new voices, being dizzy with jet lag, fighting about living space with cockroaches and spiders, tasting local soft drinks and beers, smelling the polluted air in the cities or the clean air in the countryside, squatting in the middle of a herd of kangaroos, sweating like a pig, freezing like a penguin, ... Yah! Life!

Vacation, As It Was

Vacation, As It Was 12/29/2003 11:44 PM
Except for most of my twenties, I've vacationed annually in York Beach, Maine since birth, in a rented cottage within sight of Nubble Light, on Cape Neddick. All of my first cousins can say the same. We don't call it York, we call it Maine, as in "Are we in Maine yet?" Whoever first slapped "Vacationland" on that state's license plates certainly saw us coming, for "Maine" and "vacation" are plainly synonymous in my clan. No other...

Take a vacation from your car

Take a vacation from your car 08/02/2004 03:20 PM
Having just returned to Paradise for a little visit, I am reminded just how cool this little place is (not that I needed much reminding *whimper*), and am looking for touristy things to do here without a car. While I was on my way up on the Pacific Surfliner train, a fellow rider told me about Santa Barbara Car Free. Awesome! Also props to CalTrans' alliance with Amtrak in California. The trains and service and overall quality of the passenger rail system is quite a bit different from what I've experienced thus far of the stuff handled by Amtrak alone.

Since we don’t get network TV, the PowerBook was propped up on the dinner table playing the nice steady robust webvideofeed from New Hampshire’s WMUR; herewith some notes on the evening and the election. Up here in Canada, American politics are a spectator sport; never as good as a really great World Series but better than most Super Bowls. This time around the Democratic race has outstanding entertainment value; we don’t know yet about the November event, but sometimes the divisional playoffs are more fun than the final anyhow...

So, my site is on the new LISHost server, just in time to sit idle for a while. I'm heading off to a much anticipated vacation, sans laptop, so things will be even quieter around here than they have been lately (at least until the 19th, maybe later). Please also note that I won't be reading any news during that time, and I'm already so far behind in my email it's no longer a joke, so responses will be delayed even longer than usual. Sorry, but it's vacation, don't you know.

One last pointer that I've been quite remiss in posting until now. Library Journal's 2004 Movers & Shakers list is out, and I'm beyond pleased to see Steven M. Cohen and Lori Bell on it! Congratulations to both of them, as well as to all of the folks included on this year's list! I'm looking forward to reading through all of the write-ups and learning lots of great new things!

I'll be away from the office until February 15th in order to take a long-promised Disney vacation with my family. I'll be checking the support newsgroups while I'm gone, but my replies will likely be slower than usual until I return. So, if you don't get an immediate reply, please don't take it personally :)

I'm taking two weeks off to spend some quality time with my family. I'm totally exhausted from the Vegas convention, and this geeky little Introvert needs some alone time to reboot. Besides, the kids are out of Summer School, and I think I need to take some time away from the 'net and just be with them.

Do You Take Your Email On Vacation With
You?
12/24/2004 12:18 PM
This isn't the first time this issue has cropped up, but now that lots of people are heading out of town on vacations, the inevitable question of how do you deal with the email piling up, is showing up again. There are those who "take their email with them," whether by laptop, mobile device or internet cafe. However, it appears that many people decide that it's better to just let it all pile up. They know that there will be a big mess when they get back to the office, and it may take a day or two to catch up, but their vacation is a real vacation.

We're Still Overworked -- Even On
Vacation
03/22/2005 07:03 PM
There have been a lot of these studies lately, but the most recent says that, indeed, we' re all still overworked -- thanks in good part to the ability of technology to keep us connected all the time. While most such studies focus on people doing additional work after hours or on weekends, this one finds that many people do work while on vacation or are not taking advantage of much of their vacation time. Yet, we still have employers insisting that emplo yees playing solitaire is a big problem. Employers need to realize that if they're setting the message that work can follow you home and on vacation, that personal time and activities should be allowed at work as well.

Why not vacation in France?

Why not vacation in France? 06/18/2004 11:12 AM
If you haven't yet booked your summer vacation, why not consider a trip to France? The New York Times has collected a bunch of articles to create a France Guide. From barges in Burgundy to the Romanesque architecture of Poitou-Charentes, there are lots of ideas for what to see and explore. If Lille, one of 2004's European Cities of Culture, is on your agenda, check out the Times' What's Doing In: Lille and Maciej's recent first-hand report, Lille. Bon voyage!

Vacation of sort 06/18/2004 03:34 AM

I just got back home from SFO after watching my wife and son enter the passenger gate.  They are going to Korea to visit family and friends for a month.  This means I'll be on a vacation from family life for the next month.  Heeehaaaw!  So far I got a private poker tourney scheduled for Saturday.  I should do well enough to beat most of the players, but I doubt I'll be taking the big pot home because trying to win the tourney takes too much fun out of the game.
