Microsoft declines to specify on
Longhorn launch date
08/02/2004 12:23 PMMicrosoft's chief financial officer, John Connors, talked up the
"innovative pipeline" that will ensure that new products and
technology keep rolling out through future years.
But "future" was the key word at the annual financial
analyst meeting when it came to the next major version of Windows.
Microsoft did not provide the final ship date for the release of
Longhorn. "We've made really good progress in the last year. The
next milestone for us is getting the beta out sometime next year and
that'll be the point at which the feature set and the schedule will
really be pretty much locked down," said Bill Gates, Microsoft's
chief software architect.
"It's a release that's driven by the breakthrough features, and
we'll have a strong sense of exactly what gets in and what the
schedule looks like as we get that beta out sometime in the next ...
well, next year sometime." Gates did not say the beta would be
released in the first half of next year, as the company had been
saying prior to last week. If the beta should slip to the second half
of the year, that could have a snowballing effect on the final ship
date and potentially push the product beyond the 2006 target that the
company has bandied about.

Esther scooped me and announced that she is investing in flickr. So am I. I haven't been
blogging about flickr too much, even though I'm addicted because I
wanted to wait to announce this first. I'm just a passive investor,
but wanted to disclose this relationship.
You can see my photos on my flickr photo page. You
can even subscribe to it in RSS 2.0 or Atom. Remember to check out the Tags page. There is also

Investing in our Future

Jose Mercury News.)
As first a presidential candidate and now the Democratic vice
presidential nominee, John Edwards has described the core of President
Bush's economic policy: valuing wealth over work.
``President Bush has a war on work -- you see it in everything he
does,'' Edwards said in a September 2003 speech. ``He wants to
eliminate every penny of tax on wealth, and shift the whole burden to
people who work for a living. So people won't pay any taxes at all
when they make money from selling stocks, when they get big dividends
every year, or when they inherit a massive estate.''
On the eve of Labor Day, the traditional kickoff to the fall
presidential race, Edwards' point is worth noting. National tax policy
-- to which both major parties adhere to a greater or lesser degree --
disfavors those of us who ``only'' work for a living.
There's another way to look at this policy, which deserves broader
discussion. Yes, it values wealth over work, but a key aim is to spur
investment.

Yahoo! Declines Request for Dead
Soldier's Email
12/22/2004 01:03 AMDead Marine's kin plead for e-mail: The family of a
soldier killed in Iraq wants access to his email account. Yahoo! has
said no.
"I want to be able to remember him in his words. I know he thought
he was doing what he needed to do. I want to have that for the
future," said John Ellsworth, Justin's father. "It's the last thing I
have of my son."
But without the account's password, the request has been repeatedly
denied. In addition, Yahoo! policy calls for erasing all accounts that
are inactive for 90 days. Yahoo! also maintains that all users agree
at sign-up that rights to a member's ID or contents within an account
terminate upon death.
I'm sure they don't want to set a precedent. If they allowed
they'd open themselves up to a ton of problems. Still, couldn't some
at Yahoo! just accidentally send the password to the family? You
know, an honest mistake and all.
