Newsreaders Cut to the Chase
Newsreaders Cut to the Chase
04/05/2005 06:15 AMNews junkies can find plenty of sources on the web for the latest
news. That's great, and it's a problem. John Gartner takes a look at
how newsreaders can help cut the clutter.

07/09/2004 12:16 AMBlogs Help You Cope With Data Overload
-- If You Manage Them
"To help juggle all those blogs, I've started playing around with a
relatively new phenomenon called a newsreader. Rather than forcing you
to jump from one blog to another to keep up with new entries,
newsreaders bring together the latest postings from your favorite
blogs in a single place." [Wall Street
Journal (free article)]
A throwaway article about RSS and aggregators that focuses entirely
on blogs and doesn't once mention the fact that there are some big
time news sites that offer feeds. Hmmm... I wonder why they would
ignore such an important fact? Could it be because the WSJ has yet to
embrace RSS and offer feeds of its own?....

Web services for newsreaders?
01/07/2004 03:07 PMIf you haven’t seen
feeds.scripting.com yet,
it’s a place you can share your OPML subscriptions files. It has
a rankings page so you can see what’s popular, you can see who
subscribes to a given feed, and if you’re a member of the site
there are a few other cool features.
Other web sites have some similar features, of course. (
Technorati is one of my
favorites.) I bring up feeds.scripting.com because it’s new and
so it’s a good time to ask what you think about web services for
newsreaders.
We at Ranchero don’t plan to create any web services. But we do
plan to make NetNewsWire work with various newsreader-oriented web
services—so here are a couple questions:
1. What existing web services interest you?
Examples: you might wish NetNewsWire uploaded OPML files automatically
to feeds.scripting.com or somewhere. Or you might wish NetNewsWire
made it easy to create
Feedster
search feeds. And so on.
And here’s the bigger question...
2. What new web services would you like to see?
I have to admit, I don’t spend much time thinking about web
services, so no really good examples come to mind. And there are
actually a number of good services out there already, some of them
under-publicized, so it may be that a bunch of good ideas have already
been done.
But I bet you can come up with some new ones.

now, it works. Didn't do this before. Once in a while, while surfing
Explorer will do the same thing, dialog box will ask if i should
connect or stay offline. Tried changing the Automatically detect
setting in LAN but that didn't help. Laptop on the same network

Toys That Connect With TVs
Toys That Connect With TVs
02/18/2004 07:58 PMIt seems like an odd time for "new toy" stories to be coming out.
They usually appear as we swing into the holiday season, not two
months later. Anyway, it seems that despite years and years of failed
attempts at making toys that interact with TV (Microsoft's Barney
doll...), companies are at it again, but this time,
they think kids will really want toys that
interact with the TV. Of course, this faces the same problem that
has come up every time people think up this idea. Most people watch
TV. They consume it. They don't interact with it, and adding a toy
in the middle doesn't necessarily improve things. Of course, there is
an element of getting kids to read/sing/clap along with a TV, but it's
not clear if the toy really enhances that process. Meanwhile, it
seems like many kids are less interested in TV and more interested in
the internet. Of course, it won't be long before we have toys that
interact with the internet as well (I'm sure some are already out
there).

03/30/2005 11:34 AM[f2c] Freedom to Connect I'm at a Freedom to Connect, David Isenberg's
conference on why network connections are important and how we can get
more of them. It's a fantastic list of attendees. David opens by
arguing that freedom to connect is a political issue. The Democrats
don't like it because they're in the pockets of Hollywood. The
Republicans don't like it because they're in the pockets of the
incumbent telcos. We need to get political, he says. IRC here. Audio
stream here. (By the way, Isenberg broke the "fuck" barrier eleven
minutes into the conference.) [Technorati tag: f2c]...
