Bad News Spreads like Wildfire

Bad News Spreads like Wildfire 09/02/2004 11:12 PM

Here's a perfect illustration of the need to track what's being said about your organization online:

  • Mustn't Text
"I can understand a place like a restaurant asking mobile phone talkers to step outside, or a place like a gymnasium asking mobile camera users to please not get strange, but a library threatening to fine people if they use text messaging... that I don't quite understand...?" [JD on MX]

  • Su rf City Libraries Gets Tough on Mobiles
"The new regulation, which comes into force from 15 September, means that if a phone rings, or if anyone is caught talking or texting, then they will face a stern warning. After the first ticking-off, though, library vistors can expect to receive fines of $250, $500 and $1,000 for repeated offences." [The Register -- in the U.K.!!!]

  • Use a Cell Phone in a Library, Pay $1,000
"City leaders of Huntington Beach California adopted an ordinance, which takes effect September 15, that bans all cell phone use in libraries, including talking, text messaging and ringing tones of any kind, reports The Associated Press." [textually.org]

And those links are just for starters (just wait until it hits Slashdot!). I feel bad for the Library because this seems to be mandated by the City (was it requested?), but can you imagine what teenagers must think of them for this? How many young librarians do you think will read that story and still want to work there?

I'm the first person to be annoyed by people talking on cell phones and the ringers, but there are far better compromises than this. After all, the press from the first $1,000 fine is not going to go well, and either it will be dismissed (removing the bite from the bark) or the Library will come out smelling quite badly. It would be far smarter to have a designated area for cell phone use, and it's ridiculous to ban text messaging as long as alerts are silent.

Instead, the Library is becoming the butt of jokes online. Do you think they know what's going on their permanent record?

New feature

New feature 04/14/2004 02:20 AM

Some of my posts have been getting kind of long, so I figured I might as well move the wordier pieces over to the feature section (and I could finally rid the world of Anil's mug). Piece s of the Future is a collection of thoughts I had tonight after watching Pieces of April for the first time. It was pretty good as a film, but I think it could be a milestone in filmmaking.

Feature in search of a DLA

Feature in search of a DLA 08/02/2004 04:24 AM

Oh yes did I forget to mention that OpenEvents needs to happen? - soon!

I'm so tired of these single feature supposed products - without social networks, personal publishing - just sitting there, all by themselves. Do they think that by including RSS - they're hip and tuned in?

I wonder?

Without friends - this product is absurd.

Anyway - here's Roland's post that I found out about this lovely feature - I mean product.

Now if only this would work seamlessly with iCal it would be even better.

From RSSCalendar .com - Product Overview:

QUOTE

RSSCalendar is an exciting new way for individuals and organizations to share their calendars with family, friends, and colleagues - utilizing the latest in "Really Simple Syndication" (RSS) technology, including RSS channel creation and aggregation. Not only is RSSCalendar easy to use but it is also easy to administer, and setup is a snap.

UNQUOTE

[Roland Tanglao]

Roland's right though - it certainly needs to support iCal and it certainly is simple.

Macworld feature: From VHS to DVD 06/04/2004 09:09 AM
Somewhere in your house is a drawer full of videotapes -- aging home movies shot with a big, bulky camcorder that may not even work anymore. You haven't watched these movies in years, but all this talk about the digital hub and iLife has got you thinking, "Why not transfer those old videos to the Mac and burn them to DVDs?" Transferring old film and video to DVD can be a time-consuming process -- but it's well worth the effort. This step-by-step guide will show you how to get set up and what to do with the movies once they're on your Mac.

Overheard at work today regarding the number of mail accounts on our system: We've got more email groups [eg. marketingteam@example.com] than we do user accounts [eg. jim@example.com], by a factor of more than 2 to 1. Bit of a lesson in that statement for software developers, I think. If you've got N users on your system, those N users can form ~N^2 groups. For example, a system containing 50 users...

VoIP is a Feature

VoIP is a Feature 01/07/2004 02:27 PM

VoIP is one of the exciting dark horses of the new Internet landscape -- and as broadband penetration grows, quality improves and costs come down to the $20/month range, it will emerge as one of the recovery drivers in the communications services industry.

Also, people are now finally understanding that "Voice" is just an "application on the Internet", rather than it's own whole infrastructure universe.  But just the same, "voice" is just a feature of broadband communications and collaboration.  Adding presence to voice is also interesting, with services such as Skype and some specialized SIP implementations doing this -- and of course consumer IM clients have gradually been adding more voice and video communications to their services, though are still somewhat dogged by quality issues, lack of cross platform or cross IM communications, and often firewall issues.

Further, it's all great that we now have a dozen end-points where we can be contacted by text and voice, asynchronously and in real-time, but we still haven't solved the problem of gathering the right people, when they are needed.  The problem of convocation management is central to Convoq's ASAP online service (in free public trial).  It flexibly supports multi-mode (text/audio/video) multi-party (1:1, groups of several people, or 1:100 seminar format) communications and conferencing, but with great tools for handling the process of getting people together.
