Overture Buys Alta Vista, FAST

Overture Buys Alta Vista, FAST 02/26/2003 12:28 PM
Overture, often referred to as one of Google's major competitors in the business of sponsoring search for other companies, has purchased two major search engines this week: AltaVista (don't hear much about them anymore) and FAST, the company behind AllTheWeb and Lycos Search. Google News has the stories. AllTheWeb is considered by many to be one of Google's few serious competitors. It sounds like Overture is getting ready for a fight....

garmin_color_gps.jpg imageStraight out of Kansas (yo) comes three new GPS units from Garmin, the eTrex Vista C, the eTrex Legend C, and the pocket-sized Quest, all in color, and all ready to help you pretend like you know where the hell you are. All three are fairly small, and are distinguished mostly by the fact that despite being middle- to low-end in the Garmin product catalog, all three are sporting 256-color transreflective displays. The Legend C should be available this month for around $375, with the Vista and Quest following throughout the summer.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory: VISTA
http://www-gsd.lbl.gov /VISTA/index.shtml

A very comprehensive and well-organized offering from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, VISTA offers "suite of programs and databases for comparative analysis of genomic sequences. There are two ways of using VISTA - you can submit your own sequences and alignments for analysis (VISTA servers) or examine pre-computed whole-genome alignments of different species (VISTA browser)." The site also offers up-to-date updates on genomic sequences. Included in the April 2004 update are the Human-Chimpanzee, Human-Chicken, and D.melanogaster-Honey Bee whole genome alignments. VISTA is definitely a site for researchers and students involved in genomic research. This has been added to Biological Informatics Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. Pigeon view 12/22/2004 01:45 AM
Here's an odd idea. The Urban Eyes proposal by by Marcus Kirsch (UK) and Jussi Angesleva (Ireland) would feed pigeons tiny RFID transmitters embedded in bird seed. When a transmitting pigeon passed close enough to one of the CCTV cameras watching the streets, the camera would transmit a video image to the Urban Eyes server. You would then see how the city looked to a particular pigeon in the 12 hours between ingestion and excretion. This won third prize in the Fused Space contest. The winning project proposed setting up light sticks on a small Swedish island; lights would be...

How to view SSL certificate? 03/24/2005 01:57 PM
If you’re at a secure site in Safari, how do you view information about the certificate?

In Firefox it’s easy—just click on the lock icon. But I can’t figure out how to do it in Safari (or IE either).

I found that Keychain Access stores certificates, but I was hoping there was an easier way to do this from the browser, or even from the command line. (Google doesn’t turn up anything for me, so it may be just that it’s not do-able, but I figured I’d ask anyway.)
