Salesforce.com Raises IPO Price Twice,

Salesforce.com Raises IPO Price Twice,
Still Gets First Day Bump
06/23/2004 11:06 AM
Yet another sign that the dot com IPO window has been thrown open again. After a variety of problem s and delays, mainly due to questions about CEO Marc Benioff's quiet period press appearances, Sa lesforce.com has finally gone public, launching that "other IPO," which many consider to be the second major IPO of the year, following Google. It appears that there was an awful lot of demand. Yesterday alone, leading up to the pricing, they raised the price from a range of $7.50 to $8.50 up to a range between $9 and $10. However, they clearly heard that there was a lot more demand, so when they sold the shares last night, they went for a price of $11. They opened this morning at $15, showing that they may have left even more money on the table, but it's not a ridiculous first day bump. So far, the price has stayed around that range. With a number of tech firms already rushing out the door it's likely that VCs and investment bankers alike are looking for just about every company they can toss through the IPO window before it closes again. There are certainly some good, solid, profitable companies this time around, but it's likely that they'll try to sneak a few duds through as well.

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

Universal's CD Price Drop Doesn't Get
Very Far

Universal's CD Price Drop Doesn't Get
Very Far
06/14/2004 09:21 PM
Last fall, Universal Music made a stunning announcement. For the first time ever in the history of CDs, they were going to drop the price of their CDs. It got a lot of attention, and many assumed that other music labels would quickly follow suit - admitting that the traditional CD business was not competitive with online music (both legal and illegal). Instead, the price drop has turned into a classic marketing blunder that should be useful for business school case studies for years to come. First, the price cuts pissed off their retail channel, who felt they were being forced into it. After some initial arguments, Universal finally agreed not to put the lower recommend prices on the CDs themselves, leaving it up to the retailers. At the same time, Universal cut out many promotional programs for the retailers, opening a door for other labels to improve their promotional programs while keeping CD prices higher. Many retailers, in turn, bought the new CDs at the cheaper wholesale prices, but kept charging the higher retail prices to boost their own margin. Since no other record label followed, the competition on pricing never showed up. Of course, this is all short term thinking by the retailers, who are simply driving more customers to online music alternatives. Especially since those very same retailers have now pulled the plug on a plan to build a giant online music store, they're setting themselves up to continue down the trail to irrelevance.

Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP Price Drop;
Maybe DS, Too
09/01/2004 08:04 AM

gba_nes_sp1.jpg imageGamesIndustry.Biz is reporting that Nintendo will drop the price of their Game Boy Advance SP to $80 in anticipation of the November launch of the upcoming Nintendo DS. (I wonder if that will include the remaining Special NES Edition models. Hrm.) Even more interesting is US retailer chatter that the DS may launch for $150 instead of $175, as Nintendo has previously stated. Unfortunately, while the SP price drop looks fairly certain, the DS drop might just be wishful thinking.

No word on European price cuts yet, but if the US gets a drop you can expect prices to (eventually) follow elsewhere.
