No Channels, But Plenty To Watch

No Channels, But Plenty To Watch 07/02/2004 06:02 PM
For years, the joke has been that we kept getting more television channels, but there was consistently less on TV. It used to be that the idea of having 100 channels was amazing, but now people have a few hundred channels to choose from on many TV systems. However, the latest report from Nielsen says that, for the first time ever, the average number of channels available has dropped. TV execs are freaking out and want a recount. Some are blaming things like TiVos for the mess, but Ernest Miller (at the link above) makes the argument that the concept of "channels" is going away thanks to the internet. People don't want more "channels" -- they want more interactivity and control, and you just don't find that with TV these days.

Telemarketers, Spammers Looking For New
Channels
11/13/2003 05:16 PM
It's popular these days to talk about putting in place technical and legal barriers to direct marketers and spammers. It sounds nice, but people forget that every time you put up barriers in front of these sorts of people, they seem to figure out new (and potentially more annoying) ways to reach you. So, it's no surprise to see these two articles show up on the same day. First, we find out that telemar keters are exploring other ways to get their message out there, including convincing people to "opt-in" for telemarketing pitches. Meanwhile, the spammers are branching out as well, adding comment spam to blogs, spamming instant messenger users and using mobile phone text messaging spam. No matter what we do, it appears these folks think it's their right to bug the crap out of the rest of us. I'm guessing that it's wishful thinking to hope for universal enlightenment among these folks to realize that annoying people is not the best way to get their message across. I can dream, though.

A bill is being discussed in Congress that would force satellite TV companies to put local broadcast TV channels on a single dish. Apparently, many split the channels between two dishes, and require you to get both if you want all their local channels. However, more interesting is that one Congressman has tried to add an amendment to the bill that would allow subscribers to do a la carte channel picking - something many consumers have wanted for many years. Unfortunately, the amendment was quickly withdrawn after others expressed "concern" over the amendment - though, it's not clear what their concerns were (other than making some of their corporate contributors unhappy). There's still a chance that the amendment will be re-introduced later, but it seems unlikely to be accepted.

DirecTV has announced plans to add four new satellites to their constellation, which once fully launched an integrated by early 2007, will allow them to broadcast up to 1,500 HDTV channels. The first two, Spaceway 1 and Spaceway 2 (if you care to get personal) should go up by next year, and will add 500 HD channels. With terrestrial broadcasting seeming to drop the ball on HD broadcasts, cable and satellite television may be the great hope for widespread adoption of the high-quality format.

My son's first concert

My son's first concert 05/27/2004 10:57 AM

Like most kids his age, my soon-to-be-five-year-old son Isaac loves music. We listen to a lot of music together, ranging from kiddie tunes to loud rock-and-roll - and he always likes the loud rock-and-roll the best. In fact, for quite a while he's been asking to go see a rock concert, but there obviously aren't many real rock shows I'd let him see at this point.

So, when I found out that Rush was kicking off their 30th anniversary tour here in Nashville, I decided to take Isaac. I was worried, though, that it would be too much for him, and we'd have to leave after the first song. I mean, he's not even five - how could I expect him to deal with the overload of a Rush concert?

Turns out my worries were a waste of time, though - he loved the show. Believe it or not, he was pumping his little hand in the air during YYZ, and he even shouted "Hey!" with the rest of the crowd during 2112. Yes, I was a proud papa :)

The concert tonight was amazing. I hope people got a chance to watch the video feed. Gil/Byrne were amazing and were eventually able to get a house full of somewhat tired old people on their feet and dancing. It was also amazing to realize how much Talking Heads songs were a part of my DNA... anyway. Maybe more when I'm less tired. Need to go to bed.

Oh, and David Byrne dedicated "Road to Nowhere" to the Repbulicans.

If you attended or heard the webcast of the Creative Commons Benefit Concert that was presented by WIRED last night, I'm sure you'll agree it was a fantastic show. Gilberto Gil and David Byrne played for almost two hours each, and even sang a couple songs together. We want to thank everyone that came out and everyone that helped setup the show.

We've updated the WIRED page with new information, featuring a short snippet from our second movie explaining the Sampling licenses. We've also created a one-page comic explaining how the license works in practice.

In other news, we've also launched a new way to support the work of our non-profit. Our support page carries several ways to give to the organization: you can become a Commoner and obtain varying levels of merchandise for your donation, you can donate directly, and you can buy t-shirts from us or cafepress.

Concert Companion Gets Wide Testing

Concert Companion Gets Wide Testing 07/05/2004 08:10 AM

concert_companion.jpg imageGod bless Roland Valliere for disproving what I'd worked so hard to establish: that not everyone from Kansas City is a raving idiot. Valliere's Concert Companion, a Palm-based PDA that can be rented to orchestragoers that displays topical information about the ongoing performance (and that we've mentioned before) is now being widely tested by a variety of organizations, included our own New York Philharmonic. Although it's not an entirely un-bumpy ride -- The Times' reviewer had his unit lock up three times, although they don't mention if it had gotten wet when they hosed out his cage -- the Concert Companion is a great idea, and I'm glad to see it getting the chance it deserves.

Arlo Guthrie Concert Notes

Arlo Guthrie Concert Notes 12/17/2004 06:36 PM

Last night four of us walked over to Passim, the legendary folk music club in Harvard Square, to hear Arlo Guthrie perform.  Passim is a basement room furnished with spectacularly uncomfortable cast-off folding chairs.  Vegetarian food is available.  The chairs and the food immediately raise the question of, if folk music is supposed to represent the struggle of working-class Americans how come Passim doesn't serve food that these folks would actually like (e.g., hamburgers) and chairs that would accomodate the typically obese frames of the poor.  Most of the time artists at Passim speak out from the stage against U.S. oppression of Iraqis, against George W. Bush, against Republicans, etc.  These protests elicit universal applause from the audience, all of whom apparently can agree on these points and all of whom are apparently rather irritated.  A true protest at Passim, one that would challenge the prevailing beliefs in the room, would be a leaflet arguing in favor of eating steak, touting its anemia-fighting and mood-mellowing properties.  Not to mention the fact that steak encourages the consumption of red wine, which is known to have many health benefits.

Guthrie came on stage after a warm-up by Alastair Moock, whose songs are heavily laced with the modern vocabulary of recovery.  The audience was awed by Guthrie's impressive guitar playing, songwriting, and storytelling.  The guy has been on the road for most of his 57 years!

Arlo Guthrie is a lot less bitter about the American political situation than the average performer at Passim and the average audience member.  He pointed out that there is only one guy in the White House and lots of folks outside the White House.  Guthrie further noted that if the world were truly full of peace and love like all the folk singers wanted and if everyone were in perfect health then it would be awfully hard to accomplish any positive changed.  By contrast, "in a world as fucked us as this one it has never been possible to do so little little and achieve so much good."

Guthrie drew a lot of strength from the final words of "Ma" in Grapes of Wrath:  "we will always be here, because we're the people", explaining that politicians come and go but the people remain to do the work and therefore can't be ignored.  It occurred to me that perhaps this idea is obsolete in an age of offshoring.  In the old days there was always work for unskilled uneducated American labor.  Now that Mexico, India, and China are tied to us with Internet and container ships is that still true?

Graham Parsons memorial concert

Graham Parsons memorial concert 07/07/2004 02:40 AM

One of my heros is Graham Parsons.... read this excellent article (from Reuters) about the concert they just did honoring him.)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Gram Parsons (news) embodied the rock 'n' roll cliche -- live fast, die young, become immortal.

In his brief 26 years, the fortunate son of a wealthy Florida family helped popularize country rock by recording albums with the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers and a pair of LPs under his own name. Along the way, Parsons influenced the Rolling Stones and discovered Emmylou Harris.

Yet his songs, such as "Hot Burrito #1" and "$1000 Wedding," never lifted him beyond cult status, in part because of his hard-living ways.

At least the bizarre aftermath of his 1973 death ensures he will never be forgotten: his remains were incinerated in the California desert by a drunken buddy who stole his body to make good on a promise. His only child, who was 7 years old at the time, remembers hearing about her father's death on the news.

Now, Polly Parsons has corralled A-list musicians such as Keith Richards, Norah Jones, Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams to perform at two tribute concerts for her father in the Los Angeles area this weekend.

"Return to Sin City: A Tribute to Gram Parsons" will take place on July 9 at the Santa Barbara Bowl, and July 10 at the Universal Amphitheater near Hollywood. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Musicians' Assistance Program, which provides assistance for alcohol and drug rehabilitation to people in the music industry.

Richards, who hosted Parsons at his French country manor during the recording of the Stones' landmark 1972 album "Exile on Main St.," was the latest addition to the bill, agreeing late last month to honor his fallen friend.

"There's a guy who never had a hit record, was never like the raging No. 1, and yet people still talk about him as if he's the greatest icon of all time," Richards says on his official Web site .

"An amazingly straight-up guy, magnetic, you know? I mean, the two of us together, look out ... I miss the man sorely."

A "FABULOUS" DEATH

Polly Parsons and her father's widow, Gretchen, share equally in the modest proceeds from Gram Parsons' estate. His copyrights have just reverted to their control, and Polly has plans to exploit the catalog more aggressively so that his music can reach beyond a small core of fans.

"There's so much new interest in authentic music, and in country, and roots-rock Americana. He is the forefather," she said in a recent interview at her Los Angeles home, filled with memorabilia relating to her father.

A nurse by training, she recently launched the Gram Parsons Foundation, which she hopes will complement other charities that help musicians or provide music in schools.

Her father's memory also lives on in a recent BBC documentary, "Fallen Angel," featuring rare performance footage, and in an independent film, "Grand Theft Parsons," which was loosely based on the events following her father's death.

Inevitably, it's his post-mortem adventures that fascinate people to this day. After Parsons died of a drug overdose in his beloved desert hideaway of Joshua Tree, California, his body was set to be taken to New Orleans for burial. But his road manager, Phil Kaufman, stole it from Los Angeles International Airport and brought it back to the desert and set it alight.

Polly Parsons thinks the whole thing is "fabulous," though at the time her family was shocked to learn that he had been "burned to a crisp," having not known about the prearranged death pact.

"It's a bit novel, and the stuff stories are made of, obviously. It's epic. It's epic in proportion! It's rock 'n' roll, it's fantastic! It just happened to be my dad!"

If a food writer at the Miami Herald, a music fan, attends a Springsteen concert on the swing state tour this fall, there's a problem with journalists being too partisan, but when an executive editor and political columnist signs a petition and lobbies the Justice Department for a change in federal policy, that's somehow okay. A closer look at Fiedler's rules.
