Security risks swell for Microsoft's
Explorer
07/02/2004 09:36 AMUsing Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser to surf the Internet
has become a marked risk — even with the latest security patches
installed.
That's the upshot of the discovery of yet another Internet Explorer
security hole being exploited by intruders bent on swiping personal
information from unwitting Internet users. The SANS Institute Internet
Storm Center issued an alert this week about pop-up ads designed to
download a program that keeps track any time a PC user clicks to the
log-in page of 50 financial institutions worldwide. The program
captures log-in information and sends it to another Web site, before
the bank can encrypt the data.

An interesting perspective from a fellow Gnomie who believes that
IE has finally had it, pure and simple. He even goes so far as to
point to what the US-CERT (Computer Emergency Readiness Team) is
suggesting for Internet users. “It is time for national leaders
to get their heads out of the sand and recognize this threat to their
[our] national and economic security, [and to begin] cooperating on a
global basis to deny access…
Why does anyone use Internet Explorer?
Why does anyone use Internet Explorer?
04/16/2005 04:57 AMRecently, our church made the switch to a new Web hosting service that
offered us a database-driven site that we can keep updated through a
Web interface. Strangely enough, the Web interface operates only under
Internet Explorer, although it appears to be written in PHP. I've
tried using the interface with both Firefox and Konqueror. It sort of
works, but I need it to really work, so I'm stuck with IE. (Maybe
that's why I'm the church's unofficial Web master.) After working with
the world's most popular Web browser, I wonder why so many people put
up with it.
RIP Internet Explorer?
RIP Internet Explorer?
07/16/2004 04:49 PMIt's hard to imagine that anyone would continue to use Internet
Explorer faced as it is with such massive security issues. If it were
a car rather than a browser, it would have been scrapped. But despite
very good reasons for moving browsers, people still aren't. Why?
There are a multitude of reasons but by far the simplest is that
average Joe doesn't know what the hell browser security issues are, or
even that the browser is just a piece of software used for accessing
the Internet. Thanks to Microsoft's spectacular decision (causing it
to fall foul of competition law) to bundle Explorer with Windows,
people don't know anything of any other browser. To many people,
Explorer is the Internet.

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PMBack in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to
differe
ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were
focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted
to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this
was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed
of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed
- and many people want it more for the always on connection than the
speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study
shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US,
many
more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower
price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is
good enough for what most people want to do with their connections
now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get
that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can
currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people
would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is
cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many
subscribers as well.

From Wish List to Check List: Customer
Input Drives Microsoft Office OneNote
2003 Service Pack 1
04/20/2004 11:26 PMIn an academic setting, a score of 90 percent earns an automatic "A".
By that measure, the team shaping Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 merits
a similar high passing grade. When the innovative application debuted
last October, it reflected the pioneering edge of the digital
note-taking category. Today, Microsoft honed that edge by announcing
the preview release of Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Service Pack 1
(OneNote SP1). Ninety percent of the features included in the software
update are a direct result of customer input and feedback -- with the
remaining 10 percent coming from indirect customer feedback.
