08/02/2004 03:12 PMBelgian developer eX-cinder has announced the release of
Plasticom 1.0,
which was originally available as a Beta release, as
MacCe
ntral reported in January. The software allows a plastic surgeon
to import digital images of a patient and manipulate them with warp
curves that are placed on the pictures and reshaped. Thanks to
Plasticom's use of the Morph Age 2.0 engine, the results are rendered
in real-time, and the software can export the final version to a TIFF,
PNG or JPEG file. The initial images can be imported from TIFF, PDF,
GIF, JPEG and other formats. Plasticom 1.0 requires Mac OS X v10.3 and
sells for US$150, with site licenses available for $600.

variety of ways, allowing you to create a flowing, natural divider

aren't even that expensive - $200 for 50 pieces at the showroom.
As is typical for fancy, avant garde home decorating items, a briny
shanty smell is not included.

Plastic that changes shape with light
Plastic that changes shape with light
04/14/2005 03:48 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Shape memory alloy, materials that change shape based on a temperature
increase, are old news for roboticists. But MIT scientists have
developed a new plastic that shapeshifts in response to light. From
the MIT News Office:
These programmed materials change shape when struck by light at
certain wavelengths and return to their original shapes when exposed
to light of specific different wavelengths.
The discovery, to be reported in the April 14 issue of Nature, could have potential
applications in a variety of fields, including minimally invasive
surgery. Imagine, for example, a "string" of plastic that a doctor
could thread into the body through a tiny incision. When activated by
light via a fiber-optic probe, that slender string might change into a
corkscrew-shaped stent for keeping blood vessels open.

If Plastic Discs Are Dead, What's Next?
03/22/2005 05:03 PMWired Magazine is now suggesting that
discs
are dead as a storage medium. With all the battling going on over
the next generation of DVD technology, Wired's products editor, Robert
Capps, notes that not very many people seem to care about the new
"high definition" audio CDs that have come out. Instead, everyone's
focused on getting an iPod and digitizing their music. While video is
definitely more difficult to transport via the internet, the argument
is that the technology is improving for compressing and transmitting
larger files. Of course, it might be interesting to put Capps in a
debate with Mark Cuban -- who also thinks that discs are dead, but
that
portable
hard drives or flash drives will take their place. Cuban's
argument is that "storage is expanding far more quickly than upload or
download speeds to our homes," so it's going to be more efficient to
move around hard drives than bits of high definition content. With
some already experimenting with
offer
ing content on iPods, it is beginning to look like this battle for
the next plastic disc technology may be a waste of time.
Update: Then again, some analysts think
discs will be big business for
the next five years. Of course, analysts always seem to be overly
positive in their predictions -- it's what helps sell reports.

Plastic Muscles Get Stronger
03/08/2004 11:16 PMWired has an article talking about how electroactive polymers
(EAPs) have gotten stronger and longer lasting. EAPs have gotten
strong enough to have a practical self contained robot (NiTi never has
gotten this strong). These muscles rival motors in that they're very
quiet and very strong and now long lasting enough to use as fans in
computers. EAPs can expand to 5 times their size, a feat unproducible
by piezoelectric materials. Of course these new EAPs have the Navy's
attention. Look for plastic muscles in your robot's future!?

“Many research groups are working to produce flexible
electronics. Most of those groups are working to improve the
electrical capabilities of organic, or plastic, materials. Researchers
from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are taking a

electrical components from crystalline silicon that can be attached to
a plastic backing. Traditional silicon components have much better
electrical properties than organic ones. The components could be

unconventional media, including rusted iron, precious stones and
