NASA Fired Will Carpenter for writing a short story. "Some kind of harrassment," they said, and since Texas is an at-will employment state, there's not much he can do about it. Is this story a valid means of self-expression or a harrassing glimpse into jilted anger? I've stumbled across more and more news stories about people being fired for writing, and students expelled for writing "dark poetry" in the classroom. How much do you have to keep secret from your classmates and co-workers?

Buildings In About 12 Hours

Buildings In About 12 Hours 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

sack_buildings.jpgBringing me back to the days when I used to play C&C: Red Alert, a few engineers in London have devised a way to quickly erect cement structures in the field. The "building in a bag" is essentially "a sack of cement-impregnated fabric" that, with a little air and water, inflates into a Nissen-shaped structure that dries and is ready for use in twelve hours. Meant to act as a stronger solution than a tent while remaining at least relatively portable, a 500-pound sack will inflate to form a structure with 172 square feet of floor space. At only $2,100, "the volume of the sack controls the water-to-cement ratio," so you don't need to fuss with hard-to-read measuring cups while trying to build a new mess hall. Wired has the full story and a diagram of the building process.

Portugal in Three Hours

Portugal in Three Hours 04/19/2004 12:17 PM
I'm off in a couple of hours for Portugal. I arrive Tuesday morning after taking a red-eye, have dinner with the conference hosts that night, talk on Wednesday morning, and leave Thursday morning. That leaves me about three hours to see the entire country, plumb its depths, and come to grips with the Portuguese soul. That would be impossible for most people. Thankfully, I am a shallow American. BTW, here's a travel tip: I've spent the past couple of weeks convincing my children that Portugal's leading export is hotel soap. That's going to save me loads of shopping time!...

More or less, at least. By this time tomorrow I'll be well on my way to being well on my way to Copenhagen for the NordU parrot tutorial session. (While the conference didn't meet minimum attendance requirements some of the tutorial sessions, including mine and Allison's Perl 6 session, have, so they're on) Should be fun--it's always nice to be able to wander around a place with history. Allison and I'll be doing a get-together with the Copenhagen.pm folks Wednesday evening. That'll prove to be a good time, I expect. Dunno if I'll spend the rest of the time (Sunday...

First 24 hours in Japan

First 24 hours in Japan 08/09/2004 07:37 AM

My first 24 hours in Japan included the following:

  • a soak in a traditional Japanese public bath
  • a swim in a 25-yard pool
  • a visit to an enormous Buddhist temple complex that has been an important pilgrimage site for hundreds of years
  • a semi-traditional tea ceremony
  • walking around three koi ponds
  • a meal in a restaurant that has been in the same family and at the same location for more than 300 years

All this without leaving Narita, the town in which Tokyo's international airport is located!

bread hours

bread hours 03/15/2003 05:14 PM
http://www.Breadhours.org A group of over 300 residents and merchants in California’s Bay Area has established a local currency called BREAD (a rough acronym for Bay Area Regional Exchange and Development), based on hours of work valued at $12 an hour. Through the BREAD network, which now has over $20,000 worth of currency in circulation, members can pay for dinner, carpentry, childcare, tutoring, clerical assistance or organic produce. Tired of traditional activism, founder Miyoko Sakashita wanted to create a positive local economy and “stop our resources from supporting global corporations that are not accountable to people and the environment.” Check it out at Breadhours.org
