Corel Gets Aggressive

Corel Gets Aggressive 08/30/2004 10:00 AM
Corel is pulling out all the stops to break Microsoft Office's hold on system builders. Next month, the company will begin offering a three-pack bundle of Quattro Pro and WordPerfect to Intel's 45,000 system builders for about $60, said Brett Denly, executive vice president of worldwide marketing at Corel, Ottawa. Corel also plans a series of Webinars and a marketing campaign in conjunction with Intel pushing a "three-fer" WordPerfect Productivity 3 Pack targeted at manufacturers of custom laptops and desktops. End users wanting to add Corel Presentations to the mix can do so for an additional $50, Denly said.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-027:
Vulnerability in WordPerfect Converter
Could Allow Code Execution (884933)
09/15/2004 01:56 AM
This update resolves a newly discovered, privately reported vulnerability. A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the WordPerfect 5.x Converter that is provided as part of the affected software. The vulnerability is documented in the Vulnerability Details section of this bulletin. If a user is logged on with administrative privileges, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts with full privileges. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer privileges on the system would be at less risk than users who operate with administrative privileges. However, user interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability.

An open letter to Corel

An open letter to Corel 06/22/2004 04:05 AM
On the occasion of the release of WordPerfect for Linux, we would like to extend Corel Corp. a hearty welcome to the growing desktop market! Corel has a history of working with Linux and helping to advance the use of Linux on the desktop and in the business world, so we find this new release of one of your flagship products to be a very significant and positive event. Your gutsy move to port WordPerfect to Linux places the company at the intersection of smart business strategy and doing what is best for the global community of infocentric citizens. However, if we could make just one request?

Bryce's new owner has renamed the application DAZ|Bryce and plans to build integration with its animation lip-sync solution DAZ|Mimic and with its art tool DAZ|Studio into the next release of the software. DAZ did not target a date for that release, simply stating that it will arrive "in the coming months," but the company confirmed its commitment to a Mac version. A feedback forum is now available on the DAZ Web site; users are encouraged to post wish lists for the next Bryce release there. The company also announced that, effective immediately, it assumes all sales and customer support responsibility for Bryce.
