Legoland Tracks Kids by Wi-FI

Legoland Tracks Kids by Wi-FI

Legoland Tracks Kids by Wi-FI 04/26/2004 02:28 PM

The Billund, Denmark, Legoland uses KidSpotter to track children in the park, if parents want: For a rental fee, parents can Wi-Fi enable their children preventing their unintentional loss. The press release says that the park is the largest Wi-Fi installation in the world, but it's only 10 hectares (about 25 acres)--could that be larger than Disney World's Wi-Fi network? Or Novell or Microsoft's sprawling campus? And what about Los Cerritos (9 square miles of Aiirmesh coverage) or Santa Clara (25 square miles of MetroFi coming online)?...

Legoland Tracking in Depth

Legoland Tracking in Depth 04/27/2004 09:27 PM
RFID Journal provides the detail on Legoland's kid-tracking Wi-Fi hardware: The magazine provides piles of additional detail about the Denmark theme park's system to let parents find their children if lost. The system combines BlueSoft's AeroScout system with software by KidSpotter, which on its Web site, is more explicit that the system can be used to track visitors patterns for better park optimization. About 1,600 children or 0.1 percent of the 1.6 million visitors, become separated from parents each year, so it's a small but significant problem. The rental fee is €3 per day; the entrance fee is mid-€20s. The park is installing 38 AeroScout units which cost from $3,000 to $4,000 each. The tags themselves cost about $85 each and the park is starting with 500 of them. Not mentioned in this article is that the tags use very tiny amounts of one-way signalling which allows their batteries to last for years....

Legoland deploys WiFi kiddee-trackers

Legoland deploys WiFi kiddee-trackers 04/27/2004 01:45 AM
The Legoland theme park has depoloyed tracker bracelets for kiddees based on WiFi tracking tag from Bluesoft.
Available for rent in the Information Office, a Kidspotter ensures that parents can always find their children whenever necessary. On entering the park, the wristband is placed on the child's arm. If parents lose sight of their child, they can send an SMS message to the Kidspotter system during their entire visit. They will then automatically receive a return message stating the name of the park area and the map coordinate of their child's position in the park. On their special Kidspotter map of the park, parents can easily see where to find their child. The Kidspotter kit consists of a small wristband with a tiny sender, plus a special Kidspotter map of the park.

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids
12/19/2004 03:47 PM
The common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology. It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3 player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that 90% of MP3 player owners over 34 years old. While this may have something to do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34 aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that 90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids
12/27/2004 04:42 AM
Well, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's putting their presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying e very random quirky auction item will snap this one up. Update: Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in question has d ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to use eBay as a publicity generating tool. It appears that's now being used by buyers to generate publicity, as well.

Technorati tracks 3M bl0gs!

Technorati tracks 3M bl0gs! 07/07/2004 08:10 AM

OK. I promise not to boast about every 1M blogs Technorati adds, but it's an opportunity to quote some interesting facts.

Sifry's Alerts
Technorati tracks 3 million blogs

On an average weekday, we're seeing over 15,000 new weblogs created per day. That means that a new weblog is created somewhere in the world every 5.8 seconds.

Of course, not all weblogs that are created are actively updated. Even though abandonment rates are high - our analyses show that about 45% of the weblogs we track have not had a post in over 3 months we are still tracking a significant population of people who are posting each day. The number of conversations are increasing. We're seeing over 275,000 individual posts every day. That means that on average, more than 3 blogs are updated every second. The median time from when someone posts something to their weblog to when it is indexed and available for searches on Technorati is 7 minutes. And we're striving to handle the load. But to be perfectly frank, it isn't easy. We've had some bugs and some outages - and for that I am truly sorry. I don't think the service is fast enough or stable enough. So, stability and fast response time is job #1, over new features and product developments. It has to work, 100% of the time.

Technorati Tracks Two Million Blogs

Technorati Tracks Two Million Blogs 04/09/2004 04:12 PM

At 4:35AM PST today, Technorati broke the 2 Million weblogs tracked milestone. The blogosphere continues to expand at an amazing pace, with about 12,000 new weblogs being created every day. We're tracking over 150,000 weblog updates every day, and growing. One of the reasons for this has been the substantial growth in hosted weblog systems like Typepad, LiveJournal, and Blogger, but also a tremendous amount of growth in smaller systems, like EasyJournal and Suicide Girls and moblogs like TextAmerica. Blogging is also growing outside of the United States and the English-speaking Internet, as we've seen lots of growth in non-English language weblogs as well, especially in Russian, French, Portuguese, Chinese, and Farsi.

We've been through 3 complete technical infrastructures, each designed to scale better than the rest, and been through two major site redesigns as well. It's been a pretty crazy fun ride so far, and I look at this as only just beginning.

We've got some more new fun features in the pipeline, and we're building out a great team of folks to help in our core mission: Be of Service. Help keep us on our toes, keep sending us feedback, and keep telling us how we can be of service to you. Thanks for letting us be a part of your lives and for putting up with us when we've had our issues. I'm incredibly grateful to be given the opportunity to build something great with such a wonderful team - both inside and outside of the company. Thanks.

A mouse is no substitute

A mouse is no substitute 04/18/2005 02:22 AM
(all links safe for work) Some once hypothesized that as pornography became more accessible and more mainstream, men in turn would become uncontrollable, ravenous sexual beasts. I always thought this myself: a man will see something in porn that a real woman won't give him—Internet porn now caters in a click to every fetish you can imagine—and he will find a way to get it.

My ex-girlfriend, observant and intelligent beyond her years, always used to tell me the opposite: it wouldn't turn men into beasts, having their way with every woman they saw. No, it would turn them away from women completely, libidos and their ability to connect with real females weakened by the hardcore acts and impossible bodies that only porn stars could give them. The porn would crave some intrinsic desire, but leave both people in the couple lonelier and less fulfulled.

Now I think s he was absolutely right.

Loyola University has received approval to investigate PolyHeme®'s use as a blood substitute for critically injured and bleeding trauma patients at accident scenes. Blood has a very short shelf life, requires refrigeration, and matching types takes too much time too carry blood in ambulances. The blood substitute has a long shelf life and is compatible with all blood types. It's designed to furnish oxygen which will "prevent organ damage in the brain, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys," until a transfusion can be done at the hospital. - pretty damn cool. I hope it works. Bug-tracker spam

Bug-tracker spam 05/28/2004 12:37 PM
I got my first bug-tracker spam today. It was just a matter of time, I suppose. (And there was a fresh round of comments spam today.)

Spammers are the thugs of the Internet.

I’m constantly amazed by just how bad some people are. Maybe it’s because I’m getting farther and farther away from my school years, when every day I interacted with a wide variety of people. It doesn’t surprise a 12-year-old when people suck. But me, I’m surprised.

Spammers aren’t on the same level as torturers or even purse-stealers. But I think that, given a different context, they’d be happy to toss some books in a bonfire in the city square.

Update: More about Net thugs... but with a happier conclusion. See Zeldman on the Andy Kaufman effect.
