Nortel, Possibly Cisco, Join WiMax Forum
09/07/2004 04:17 PMUnnamed sources are saying that Cisco recently applied to join the
WiMax Forum: An official Nortel press release announces that Nortel
has joined the forum. Cisco might be an unwelcome addition to the
forum from the perspective of existing vendors because the company
tends to dominate markets. While the company has significant wireless
roots in the Wi-Fi business, it hasn't historically sold radio gear to
the community of operators that builds large metropolitan networks. So
it would be interesting to see how Cisco's presence might alter the
WiMax market. But I'll reserve further comment until Cisco's WiMax
Forum membership is confirmed or denied....

Proxim, Intel Join Forces on WiMax
Proxim, Intel Join Forces on WiMax
06/17/2004 07:25 PMProxim and Intel will work together on WiMax, a boon to Proxim: The
smaller company's stock shot up 27 percent today on the news that it
would be participating in what Intel has increasingly focused on as
the next important wireless market. WiMax has the potential to offer
point-to-point and mobile standardized broadband wireless service, but
its time to market is still a concern. If it doesn't achieve
productization quicklly enough--and signs are that we might not see
unlicensed WiMax products in the US until 2006--existing somewhat
proprietary solutions could commoditize quickly enough for the market.
Meanwhile, higher-speed cell data offerings might take the sheen off
the necessity of mobile WiMax, although the latter's potential for
using unlicensed bands gives it an edge. SkyPilot's announcement
today--after a few years of development--of their broadband wireless
system adds another player to a tightly focused market that hopes to
fill in the home and business broadband market. Their equipment works
in the unlicensed 5.8 GHz band. Although the press release says that
Proxim expects to ship fixed broadband equipment in early 2005 and
"portable" (not mobile) devices later next year, it doesn't state
whether these will be shipped in the US or overseas, nor which bands
will be used....

Alvarion Says Pre-WiMax Means WiMax
Commitment
Alvarion Says Pre-WiMax Means WiMax
Commitment
06/18/2004 03:58 PMAlvarion VP says that the company's new platform is ready for WiMax,
backed by their promise to upgrade it: A few weeks ago, I wrote about
Alvarion's BreezeMax platform and took the company to task for not
spelling out precisely what they were promising customers when saying
that BreezeMax was their WiMax platform. WiMax hasn't reached a final
certification stage yet for equipment that complies to IEEE 802.16a:
broadband wireless point-to-point service in the 2 GHz to 11 GHz range
for licensed and unlicensed bands. That certification standard might
not be ready until 2005; likewise, chips designed for it could be that
far ahead, too. I wrote in May that Alvarion should have said We're
not selling WiMax equipment, but something we believe we be so close
to it that only firmware upgrades are required. I also wrote,
Interestingly, while they say futureproofed on one page, they don't
mention whether purchasers would receive free hardware upgrades if the
WiMax standard as deployed is too different to allow firmware changes
to this equipment. Alvarion wanted to clarify what they meant, and I
spoke today with Carlton O'Neal, the vice president of marketing for
the company. I asked O'Neal if Alvarion is guaranteeing its
customers--as a few other firms have apparently done in a limited
way--that BreezeMax would be a zero-cost WiMax upgrade when the final
standard was available. He said it would. O'Neal said that the company
had built the platform to allow software upgrades, firmware upgrades,
and hardware upgrades. They believe that with the current state of the
WiMax standard they can entirely rely on software and firmware to
handle full WiMax certification: "Our hope, our plan, is that it's
software and firmware," he said. Their last resort would be hardware,
but "we're prepared to do that." Alvarion has been developing the
BreezeMax system for three years, and decided that given the state of
WiMax and their own readiness, they needed to bring the carrier-grade
equipment into the marketplace with a commitment to make this their
flagship WiMax platform even though the standard is still under
development. What they deploy today works, and some of their customers
may choose to stick with it far past when interoperable WiMax hardware
and their own upgrades are available. Alvarion will eventually rely on
chips built by Intel to power their WiMax gear, and Intel's circuits
aren't due until 2005 at this point. But...

Mobile Operators Want Yet Another
Standard
Mobile Operators Want Yet Another
Standard
12/31/2004 05:18 AMHow very typical... After all the hype about 3G -- which so far has
failed to live up to expectations, and all the impending hype about
other wireless broadband technologies such as WiMAX and FLASH-OFDM, it
looks like a bunch of mobile operators have decided to toss all that
and
get to work on a completely
new standard for mobile broadband, with the aim of being 10
times as fast as 3G. While it isn't really surprising, this is the
type of thing the industry is famous for. They overhype a technology
way beyond what it can do, then when people realize it really isn't
that impressive, they move on to a new standard that they'll hype up
for years. While there are some big players joining up to work on
this project, expect it to take
quite a long time for anything
to actually come of it. By the time this offering reaches a
commercial launch, the requirements of users are likely to have
changed drastically. The competitive marketplace will also be very
different. So, before people go off and declare this new, completely
imaginary standard to be
the wireless broadband technology of
the future, it might make sense to wait a few years and see how far
it's really progressed.

Why VBScript Logical Operators Aren't
Why VBScript Logical Operators Aren't
07/15/2004 04:59 PMIf you've ever lost a monitor to VBScript (from frustrated
punching, mine has dents), Eric Lippert provides some solace in that
there's at least a reason why it behaves that way.
In JScript you can do something like this:
if (blah != null && blah.frob == 123)
and it works just fine. But in VBScript
If (Not Blah Is Nothing) And (Blah.Frob = 123) Then
Then if Blah actually is Nothing, this still crashes and dies, whereas
JScript does not. What the heck is going on here?
What's going on is that VBScript is not logical. VBScript is bitwise.
All the so-called logical operators work on numbers, not on Boolean
values! Not, And, Or, XOr, Eqv and Imp all convert their arguments to
four-byte integers, do the logical operation on each pair of bits in
the integers, and return the result. If True is -1 and False is 0 then
everything works out, because -1 has all its bits turned on and 0 has
all its bits turned off. But if other numbers get in there, all bets
are off.
I didn't say it was a good reason. I just said it was a reason.
