Not only that, but the HD921 has a DVI out, meaning it can drop a clean digital signal...

Raising the Humble Chicken

Raising the Humble Chicken 04/29/2004 11:24 PM
For the last two summers I have maintained a flock of chickens. The results have been ... interesting. More eggs than I could eat, interesting evenings, and a freezer full of what I consider very healthy meat. I plan to share my experiences in this article with the hope that somebody might be inspired to raise a small flock.

If, as the old fashion saw goes, what separates humans from animals is the ability to accessorize, then it simply won't do to complement a Chanel suit with a humdrum black nylon computer case. For the laptop-toting woman who has everything but can accommodate more, Talene Reilly offers fashionable computer bags in exuberant purple wool tweed or pomegranate or lime cotton-polyester. Even the linings add fun to function, with purple flowers, aqua dots or Popsicle-bright stripes. But these bags don't rely on good looks alone: they have multifunctional pockets for power cords, discs and a cellphone.

LucidLink Turns Humble Office into

LucidLink Turns Humble Office into
Secure Enterprise
07/16/2004 05:03 PM
InterLink wants every office to have affordable wireless security: InterLink introduced LucidLink Wireless Security several weeks ago to connect smaller offices with enterprise-grade wireless encryption. The company knows how to build RADIUS and other authentication servers, and it saw the large gap between pre-shared secrets--subject to social engineering and potential cracking--and servers that require IT expertise and cost tens of thousands of dollars. In an interview with InterLink's president and CEO Mike Klein and vice president of marketing Wayne Burkan, they laid out how this new offering might appeal to the hundreds of thousands of businesses without information technology departments but who would benefit from a secure, login-based wireless network. LucidLink is a small RADIUS server that has a simple front end, less complicated than, say, setting up calendar entries in Outlook. It requires a special client to be installed on computers. The client requires a reboot after installation--in the current version--and that's the most onerous task in gaining access to the network. An administrator uses a simple program to approve users as they request access via the client software. It's an option-free package that meets a high bar of wireless network security through unique WPA master session keys per user. Klein explained that InterLink's primary business remains on the high-end. One ISP they work with, for instance, has 6.5 million users that authenticates using 13 AAA (authenticiation, authorization, accounting) servers from InterLink. The firm works with AT&T, Swisscom, and other giants, and has their software incorporated by firms like HP and Siemens and repackaged by Infobox into hardware appliances. "Security itself is fairly complex today in the enterprise marketplace," Klein said. The idea behind LucidLink is that it "brings a consumer-oriented ease of use model." He likened it to a garage-door opener, which masks a fair amount of wireless technology with a single button. "We're bringing enterprise-level security down into the small-to-medium business market" with the ease of use experience required by the small business, Klein said, calling LucidLink "RADIUS for the rest of us." LucidLink takes the management of this network away from an IT manager and puts it "on the desktop of an administrator, like an office manager or a receptionist," or the same person who handles cell phone numbers, access codes and badges, or building access. Klein acknowledges that WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) provides a higher bar of security, but says that pre-shared keys aren't useful...

Digital video and computers may go together like a horse and carriage, but getting the video out of the camera and onto the PC is where many people get tangled up in the reins - especially those whose computers lack the FireWire connection common to digital video cameras. There is equipment that can help you burn that footage of the peewee hockey game onto a DVD, including video-capture cards that can be installed in your computer to connect the camera directly to the PC and bulky external decoder boxes that can connect it via a U.S.B. port. The new AVerMedia UltraTV USB 300 External TV Tuner gives you a pocket-size solution, and it can also play and record live television on your laptop or desktop PC.

Japan's New Generation of Robots 03/14/2005 06:03 PM
A Washington Post article discusses the wide variety of robots being embraced in Japan; from the latest android receptionist and the familiar Asimo humanoid to a $3500 robot seal designed to comfort the elderly. "Scientists and government authorities have dubbed 2005 the unofficial year of the robot". The article notes that while the US is probably Japan's equal in the field of AI, Japan is far ahead in robotics. They are investing billions of dollars to develop humanoid robots that can take part in every day life. One researcher suggests that monotheistic western religions may be part of the reason that humanoid robots cannot be accepted in the west as they are in the east.

Japan's FTC says Microsoft violating
Antimonopoly Act
07/13/2004 10:33 AM
The Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) said Tuesday that certain provisions in license agreements between Microsoft Corp. and Japanese PC vendors violate Japan's antimonopoly code. Should licensees believe Microsoft is infringing on their patents, Microsoft's current provisions restrict possible legal action, according to a statement issued by the JFTC. The JFTC decided such a provision unjustly restricts the business activities of the licensees and thus violates section 19 of the Antimonopoly Act, it said.

Japan's rent-a-puppy business

Japan's rent-a-puppy business 06/30/2004 09:39 AM
Sid sez: "Babies can't be far behind ... in Tokyo you now can rent the cute little dogs that are all the rage. About $15 will get you an hour of canine bonding, and for a heftier fee you can take one home for the night. All puppy necessities included. These same dogs usually sell for about $3,000-$5,000."
In Tokyo alone, the number of shops registered to rent out pets grew to 115 as of March, up from 17 just three years earlier.

Each person who rents a dog by the hour is given a leash, some tissues and a plastic bag - in case the pooch has to answer the call of nature. They also get strict instructions not to let the dogs run free, to keep them in the shade on hot summer days and refrain from giving them snacks.
