google ipo > /dev/null

google ipo > /dev/null 08/20/2004 11:51 PM

Looks like Google stock is going to finally start trading tommorrow at $85.  Frankly, I don't know what all the hoopa over the IPO is about.  First of all, I don't think there is a real customer loyalty for Google.  Google is just a tool that became popular enough for the company name to become a verb.  Utility does not make customer loyalty nor brand value IMHO.

Google's search engine was effective in the past but it has failed to keep up with the changing environment such as the rising level of noise introduced by search engine optimization (SEO) hacks and blogging.  Big IPO means new competitors will spring up to pull a google on Google and, if they offer better results than Google, I expect Google users will happily flock out of Google's grasp.

Gmail is interesting but I think trying to make money off private information is like playing with fire.  Besides, others can and are doing the same.  Desktop search has more interesting possibilities, but they are vulnerable to counterattacks by Apple and Microsoft.

Finally, Orkut left a bad taste in my mouth.  I was favorable in the past toward Google's habit of offering experimental services, but those service didn't require me to invest substantial amount of time and attention.  Orkut did and I now feel like a spent laboratory rat.  While some people might laugh at Friendster, at least they are trying earnestly to make something out of it.

So, I am sending Google IPO to the null device.

1GB of webmail from Google

1GB of webmail from Google 04/09/2004 04:08 PM

Provided this story about a new 1 GB webmail service from Google isn't a lame early April fool, I'm really psyched about it. A decent amount of space combined with Google's search technology could really help me keep up to date with my email. Just off the top of my head, here's my ideal hosted webmail feature list:

  • Costs between two and ten dollars a month. This is a critical service I'm entrusting to a company - I want the reassurance that there's cold hard cash on the line if they screw anything up. Paying for a no-ads option is fine too.
  • Smart filtering. I'm on a bunch of different mailing lists and can't live without filters.
  • "Virtual folders" - things like "all emails from this person", "emails sent to this person" should be on hand at all times.
  • Import and export mail as mbox files. Don't lock me in!
  • Decent spam filtering, obviously.
  • Send plain text, receieve plain text. No HTML in either direction.
  • Kick-arse search.

I don't really have very complex needs, which is why I'm so frustrated that so far nothing I've tried has done what I need it to. Here's hoping Google can hit the mark.

Update: The Google press release is dated April 1st. Given their history, it's almost certainly a hoax. Aah well, we can dream.

First thoughts about Panther: Address

First thoughts about Panther: Address
Book...
10/29/2003 12:10 AM

Address Book under OSX has never been a particularly impressive application, but it's just about worked as a system wide piece of kit. Panther brings with it a number of changes and improvements and a couple of nasty unprovements too. There's some functionality here that I can't categorically say wasn't in Jaguar, so bear with me if I foul something up:

  • Every card in Address Book can have a picture associated with it. This is not new. However previously you were just able to pick up a picture and drop it whole onto the hole allocated for it, where it would sit greatly diminished in size and essentially unusable. The version in Panther introduces the lovely resize and crop functionality that's been in iChat AV since the beta. Very nice indeed;
  • The edit functionality now lasts when you change cards which is a good change. Previously editing an card meant entering it individually and clicking on the edit button. Now the edit button will remain depressed until you release it. It's not the UI approach I'd have taken, but it pretty much works;
  • The edit interface itself is a bit of a dog's dinner. The previously understated and probably not very clear grey + and - buttons have now become garishly red and green, the edit screen radically indents everything and moves stuff around to the extent that it's difficult to see what's going on and where your information has been moved to. An approach that highlighted the information rather than the labels might have been better;
  • Also noticed for the first time is the 'send updates' functionality - which I'm sure has been there for ages. It appears to be a way of informing everyone in your address book of any and all changes to your personal address card. I'm interested, but too scared, to see how this might work...
